TITLE: K-FACTOR AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE
K-factor is one mathematical attribute of a distorted current, having harmonic distortion.
It is given as:
h = n
h (I /I )2 2 2
h 1
h = 1
K =
h = n
(I /I ) h 1
2 2
h = 1
Where h is order of harmonic,I is the current of h harmonic and K is the K-factor.th
h
The eddy current losses in the transformer are proportional to the K-factor. Hence if thecurrent in the transformer is distorted the transformer design should be as per K-factordesign methodology.
For a pure sine-wave current with no harmonic distortion, the K-factor is 1.
If the current harmonic spectrum is as given in the below, the K-factor can betable-1calculated as per the above formula as 7.143

“You question, we answer”
Question:What are zero-phase sequence currents? How are they generated? What is theirimpact?
AnswerZero phase sequence currents are currents generated in three phases R, Y and B buthaving zero phase difference between them. Due to zero phase difference betweenthem, they get added in neutral unlike positive or negative phase sequence currentshaving 120 deg. phase shift between them, which makes the vector sum of thesecurrents equal to zero in neutral.
Zero phase sequence currents are generated by harmonics having frequencies whichare multiples of 3, i.e. 3 , 6 , 9 , 12 etc.
rd th th th
Zero phase sequence currents have changed the wiring philosophy from 3 and ½ corewiring for R-Y-B-N to 3 + 1 core wiring, as current in neutral can be as high as current in R-Y-B phases in presence of triplen harmonics of current.
To filter these currents 3-phase 4-wireActive Harmonic Filter is required.
Energy Conservation :Energy Conservation is the need of the day and today the rising energy consumption is ofgrowing concern due to adverse effect like climate change and global warming. TITLE : ENERGY SAVING IN PUMP
DOC.NO. : AMTCS-233
Industry : Steel
Application : Pump
Motor rating : AC Induction Motor, 3-phase
110kW :
415VOLT :
1482RPM :
50Hz :
186AMP :
Previous system : Motor was running on Star Delta starter.
Problem observed : 1) High maintenance cost.
2) Energy losses due to flow control by Valve.
Present system : AMTECH 110 kWAxpert-Eazy VFD used in place of
Star Delta starter.
kW (Consumption) Valve Position
Previous system (Without drive): 98.9 kW 90% Open
Present system (With drive ) : 83.9 kW 100% Open
System block diagram :
Merits of new system : 1. Easy & smooth operation.
2. Energy saving due to flow control by VFD.
Economical analysis :
 Energy consumption without VFD - P1 = 98.9 kW Energy consumption with VFD - P2 = 83.9 kW Energy Saving Per Day ((P1-P2)*24) = 360 Units. Saving Per Day @ Rs.5/-Unit = Rs.1800/- Saving Per Year (Approx. 300 Days) = Rs.5,40,000/- Payback periodApproximately = 6-8 Months.

Advantages ofAmtech Grid Power factor controlling system
 Maintain PF during Power export to or Import from grid.
 Generate monthly reports through which we can analiseActive Power, Reactive Power and PF.
 There are two modes of operation: PF Mode or VAR Mode through which we can regulate gridPF.
 With installation of Grid Power control system customer has reduced PF penalty from electricityboard to almost zero.
The system is working satisfactorily till date and customer is delighted with it.
