Transcript of From the Chair - Handbell Musicians of America Area...
Spring is definitely in the air and so are handbell concerts! Whether you are
ringing, directing or cheering on your favorite ringers from the audience, I hope
everyone is having a fabulous concert season.
This year, spring also means festival planning! The board and festival
committee are busy finalizing details for our 2017 Festival Conference and Young
Ringers Conference at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York.
Don’t miss out on the fellowship and fun of massed ringing plus the opportunity to
learn from many talented handbell clinicians. It’s not too late! Register today!
We are also looking ahead to the incoming 2017-2019 Area 2 Board, fall
workshops, and the 2019 Young Ringers and Festival Conferences. There are many
exciting events in the planning stages. Be sure to stay up to date by following Area 2
on FaceBook, checking our website, and opting to receive Area 2 emails through
your Handbell Musicians of America account at handbellmusicians.org.
As another season of handbell ringing winds down for many, I hope you
will thoughtfully consider how you can be a part of Area 2. Next year will you host
or lead a workshop, attend events, or share your time and talents as an elected or
appointed board member?
My time on the Area 2 Board has been rewarding beyond measure. I have
learned so much from other talented handbell musicians who care deeply for hand-
bells and the future of handbell ringing in Area 2. I have made wonderful friends,
all in the name of handbells! I promise you, involvement in your Area 2 community
will bring you wonderful experiences, new friends, and deepen your passion for
handbells.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the festival in June or an Area 2
event soon!
Happy Ringing!

the Area 2 loop and encourage them to be active participants in their handbell community.

Insurance Coverage for Local Festivals From Susan Guse - First in a series of two articles:
Insurance for Festivals Endorsement of Festivals My church, St. John’s Lutheran in Poughkeepsie NY, has participated in the Hudson Valley Handbell
Festival Conference for 15 years. For over twenty years, the location of the Festival has been Nyack College in their large gymnasium. In 2017, we had the 41st Hudson Valley Festival Conference.
Nyack College requires all outside events held at the college to provide proof of insurance coverage.
Up until January 2017, the Hudson Valley Festival has met that requirement by applying for endorsement from the National Office of Handbell Musicians of America.
At the beginning of 2017, the insurance underwriter of National’s coverage changed their policy so that
H.M.A. is no longer able to provide coverage to endorsed events (local festivals). Jenny Cauhorn, Executive Director of H.M.A., recommends that each Festival secure their own insurance. She suggests:
Seek coverage with a local service provider (Google “Commercial Insurance service for a list of local
companies that service your area). Contact 2 to 3 providers to get comparison quotes. Ask for “general event liability coverage. The venue for your event will provide a contract and should indicate the clauses in the contract that ad-
dress insurance. Costs for insurance will vary widely based on state, city, venue type, event type and anticipated attendance. The three quotes I requested for the Hudson Valley Festival were all less than $300. Based on our average attendance each year, that works out to $1.25 - $1.50 per ringer.
Next time: Why we still need to apply for endorsement . . .

Change in Endorsed Event Policy (reprinted with permission from E-Notes January 2017) One of your benefits as a member of Handbell Musicians of America is the option to have events you present Endorsed by the national office. Endorsement offers a variety of benefits including:
• Listing in the online event calendar at Handbellmusicians.org (including a link to your event website).
• Listing in print version of the event calendar in each issue of Overtones.
• Inclusion in our monthly Event Notes newsletter.
• Data file of member addresses in your region to use for event marketing.
• Payment of ASCAP licensing fees. An additional benefit has been the extension of our national insurance policies to cover your event as well. Due to changes in policy set forth by the insurance underwriter of our coverage, we are no longer able to provide any insurance coverage for Endorsed events. Standard coverage will remain in place for Spon-sored events. Sponsored events are those events that are produced and presented by an Area or sub-Area. Questions regarding this change in policy should be directed to executive director, Jennifer Cauhorn. To learn more about endorsed events go to: http://handbellmusicians.org/events-networking/events/sponsored-endorsed-event-information/
