...to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy... Christmas is over. Ideally, we would be "sanctified" by now. The Christmas season includes the three stages of thespiritual life: the purgative, the illuminative, and the unitive. Advent represents the purgative, where we are being purified ofour sinfulness and attachments. Secularism and commercialism has obliterated the true spirit of Advent. Instead of a time ofpenance, it has become one big party, like Mardi Gras in reverse. Mardi Gras developed as one last party before a time ofpenance. Advent in America has become many parties before a time of partying. We have to go against the grain of our society in order to followthe way of Christ, the way of the Church. Once purged, the soul is ready for light. The illuminative stage is a time of wisdom filling the soul, now that it has prepared the way. Outwith the bad air, in with the good. This is a discipleship stage where we are learning the reasons why this is a good path. Why be a Christian? Whybe a Catholic Christian? Why be virtuous? Like a child, we need information. This can be compared to Christmas and Epiphany. Jesus' light is re-vealed in the cave of Bethlehem. A star guides the magi to behold Him. Bathed in the light of Jesus' face, the magi show us the way of adoration. They were "called to be holy". In adoration we discover the fullness of God, revealed in the Baptism of Our Lord in the river Jordan. At the baptism, Father, Son and Ho-ly Spirit are all manifested. So too, in adoration, the Trinity is deeply at work, continuing to purify, continuing to illuminate, but also beginning tounite in a more profound way. This is a contemplative conversion and the unitive stage of the spiritual life. Here, Our Lord takes over. I compare itto using your cruise control on your car. When it kicks in you know that its not you pushing the gas. In contemplative prayer, its no longer you think-ing about God, it's God thinking within you. St. Paul writes to those in Corinth who are already sanctified, but called to growth. We too, sanctified by the sacraments, are still called tobecome holier than we are today. We are not perfect. We need to grow in love, for God is love. If we want to live with Him forever, than we mustlearn to love more and more habitually here on earth. One of the best ways to grow in love is to spend time with love, perfect love, in the BlessedSacrament. Jesus is present there, waiting for you.

Gratitude Thanks to all of you who contributed time and treasure during the first half of our fiscal year at St. Stephens. Of the various needs in ourChurch, your parish giving met and exceeded our budgeted hopes. Our overall revenue exceeded budget by $20,320.64. (Budget was $839,970;Actual was $860,290.64) Thank you for your generosity. Our expenses fell short of budget by $84,737.24. (Budget was $840,670.74; Actual was$755,933.50) That leaves us with $105,057.88 variance as of December 31st. Parish giving is our first priority in the stewardship of treasure, along, of course, with the needs of the poor. Secondarily, the Archdioce-san Annual Appeal is critical to maintain the mission of the Archbishop here in Western Washington. We are still $5000 short on our goal of $194,000 as a parish. Please consider helping us reach our goal. Every dollar counts. Thirdly, there is an extraordinary appeal for the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign, which provides for priests and religious in their re-tirement. We currently have pledges for $589,000 of our $1,905,000 goal. If you haven't pledged already, could you prayerfully consider supportingthis campaign. I myself have pledged in honor of those priests who have so worthily served our needs. I think of Fr. Heffernan, who recentlypassed away, or Fr. Roman, who recently was moved to Mt. St. Vincent. Fortunately, they were and are being cared for in a worthy way. I mentioned the poor. They deserve our first dollar. Our world is not always kind. Thanks to your giving and the volunteers who facilitateministries that address various needs, God is caring for the poor here at St. Stephens.

Adore Me in My humility and I will make you humble.Adore Me in My obedience and I will make you obedient.

Adore Me in My prayer to the Father and I will begin to pray My Father in you. - In Sinu Jesu (177)
