It never ceases to amaze me how hard some of us will work for a little food and beer. I also want to thank all of those involved with the sign rejuvenation. While I’ll always miss the sailboat, I’m confident that this new design will be loved for generations to come. I’d also like to congratulate all of our neighborhood graduates. Well done, have fun, be safe, and all the best in your future endeavors. I look forward to stories of your continued successes. From The President

Hi Neighbors,

I’ll start with a hearty thanks to all of the volunteers who helped on cleanup day. It never ceases to amaze me how hard some of us will work for a little food and beer. I also want to thank all of those involved with the sign rejuvenation. While I’ll always miss the sailboat, I’m

confident that this new design will be loved for generations to come.

I’d also like to congratulate all of our neighborhood graduates. Well done, have fun, be safe, and all the best in your future endeavors. I look forward to stories of your continued successes. We’re gearing up for the Summer Kick-Off, and I can’t wait to see the boats for the cardboard regatta. I can only hope for smooth seas and a fast race, or some chop and a light gale to test our captains.

With school almost out for the summer, I’d like to remind everyone to slow down around our neighborhood. Let’s have a safe and memorable summer.

The Travels of Devyn Gardner

(Devyn is doing this trip alone and staying at hostels that cost around $5 a night…)

My journey began with a plane ticket. I wasn’t sure how long I would be gone or where I would go but I was excited for whatever path this journey would take me on. I’ve been traveling for three months now and looking back at all of the adventures and experiences I’ve soaked up feels like a dream! In preparation for this experience I worked non-stop for a year after graduating from university and saved every penny I earned. I started in Bali, a small Hindu island located in Indonesia. I was living in Ubud and volunteering as an English teacher at a school located in a local village about 20 miles outside of Ubud. The school was founded by a non-profit organization

called Yayasan Widya Sari which offers underprivileged, local students the opportunity to learn and practice English. I was teaching in a traditional Balinese

village classroom, which was basically an open, bamboo hut. Classes were often disturbed by “visitors”- chickens and dogs that ran around freely at the school!

D u r i n g t h e w e e k e n d s , I t r a v e l e d a r o u n d t h e picturesque countryside of Bali on scooter, visiting waterfalls, ornate Hindu temples, and beaches.

O n e v e r y m e m o r a b l e morning, I hiked Mount Batur, a volcano about 1,700 meters in height, to catch the sunrise! I spent mornings practicing yoga among rice terraces and preparing lesson plans. To say that Bali was p a r a d i s e i s a n understatement, the beautiful

landscape, ornate architecture, and warm, friendly people created a peaceful start to my journey! One month later, I booked a flight to Ho Chi Minh- the historic, exciting hub of Southern Vietnam. I spent one month traveling up the coast of Vietnam by sleeper bus, taking my time to stop in charming, local Vietnamese cities such as Hoi An.

Hoi An is famous f o r t h e i r O l d Quarter, which has a l l o f t h e characteristics of an ancient, Asian c i t y . P i c t u r e a s m a l l c i t y o f Chinese temples, tea rooms, and cobblestone streets lit up at night by chinese lanterns! A n o t h e r memorable and e x h i l a r a t i n g e x p e r i e n c e w a s canyoning in the city of Dalat.

Canyoning involves sliding, jumping, and rappelling down waterfalls. Another highlight of Vietnam was staying in Sapa, a town located in Northern Vietnam, close to the border of China. I stayed with a village woman that cooked me local food and took me on long, walking tours of nearby villages. Vietnam was a new and exciting experience for me because it signified the

start of my solo, backpacking journey. Also, Vietnam boasted my favorite food of any place I’ve traveled!

My favorite was Bun Cha, a traditional dish served in Hanoi which consisted of Vermicelli noodles in a broth, grilled pork, and a side “salad” of mint, basil, and other greens. Yum!

I flew from Hanoi to Bangkok, which began my travels in Thailand. Although I ’ v e b e e n t o Thailand before, I decided to travel in the South which was, for the most part , uncharted territory for me! I spent some time in the buzzing chaos of Bangkok, which despite the heat, p o l l u t i o n a n d s t e n c h , w a s a favorite of mine! There is something invigorating about being in a city that never sleeps- a feeling reminiscent

of being in New York City, but with all of the charm of being in South East Asia.

I then traveled to the Southern Islands and beaches of Koh Tao, Krabi & Ko Phi Phi. Days were spent relaxing on idyllic beaches surrounded by lush jungle and limestone karst formations. The landscape felt like

something out of a movie! Actually, I visited infamous Maya Bay, where a scene out of Leonardo diCaprio's “The Beach” was shot! I now find myself in Siem Reap, a laid- back, sleepy little city located in Cambodia. Tomorrow I am going to explore the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat- the largest religious monument in the world! I’m not sure where exactly I’ll go next, but sometimes the journey is more important than the destination!

Roads & Zoning

We received a request for approval of i m p r o v e m e n t s f r o m t h e f o l l o w i n g neighbors:

Evan Featherstone, 354 Dutchship Rd. He requested approval for a patio and tree removal. They did receive signatures from their adjoining neighbors.

Ms. Dolores Mercier requested information regarding a non-permanent structure. It will not have permanent footings. No permit is required. They do not need to submit this structure to the NS board for approval.

Deborah and Steven Cieri at 465 Edgewater Rd are extending their pier and adding a

boat lift. They did acquire proper county permits and notified their adjoining neighbors of this modification.

All Request were approved by the Board during the May 2nd meeting.

There has been additional discussion regarding trash and debris on North Shore Rd. We are contacting the local police to see if they have any suggestions on how to curb this offensive and unnecessary behavior.

Marina

I wanted to thank everyone who showed up for clean-up day and helped out with cleanup at the marina. A lot of tree debris and brush was taken care of along with a lot of old ropes that were tied to the pilings that haven't been used in years.

A couple repairs the marina will be completed shortly to include replacement of a GFI, replacement of a photocell for the Eastside lights, replacement of a few deck boards on the p ier , addi t ion and replacement of any cleats on the Eastside bulkhead.

There have been a couple people who have showed concern with some other bulkhead issues on the east side.

I know a lot of people have made donations to the marina fund to help with the repairs and I want to thank them for that. The Marina helps with everybody's property value and I would like to stress that any future donations would be very helpful.

I would also like to stress that anyone parking on the bulkhead side please refrain from doing so. When vehicles park near the bulkhead on the left side of the driveway it puts extra stress against it. And if we can try to extend the life of the bulkhead as long as possible we should be able to maintain it.

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful summer. And I would like to ask again if anybody would like to be part of the marina committee, please get in contact with me thank you.

Friends of the Gardens

Don't forget to mark your calendar for the garden club sponsored luau on July 14th at 6pm.  Please bring a dish to share, byob and luau related attire.  We will be offering a "wild about North Shore" ceramic mug with a drink for purchase. All donated funds are used by the garden club for maintaining the gardens.

The next meeting will be held  Tuesday, June 20th, at the home of Lisa Stamper, 405 Dobbins Lane,  7pm. We will go over the needs of the gardens and plan the luau.

Anyone interested in helping with the luau, please attend.

Lisa Stamper Membership Report June 2017 Jeanne Brush, Membership

Our current membership stands at 147. We’re still missing a few folks so check your desk pile for your renewal form. Or contact me and I would be happy to get you another one. We want to see you at the beach and your kids at the park.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU goes to all the generous neighbors who have contributed to the Marina Fund!!!! To date almost $5,000 has been donated.

These funds will be sequestered in a separate Marina Capital Improvement account which will be used for dredging and major bulkhead work. This will be a multi-stage project which will take time and money. It will also take major fund-raising efforts going forward.

If this was some other neighborhood we would be faced with simply watching our bulkhead collapse and the marina silt up and become unusable. But this is North Shore and if anyone can do it we can do it.

Again, on behalf of the Board and myself, thank you to:

Have Fun With Your Chainsaw Without Fear From the County By: Jeanne Brush

There comes a time every summer when we gaze around our property and realize that some vegetation is in need of major whacking to keep stuff from littering patios, falling on roofs, scratching cars or improving a view. Most properties in North Shore fall within the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area and are subject to State laws and regulations pertaining to tree and other vegetation cutting or removal that are designed to protect our waterways from erosion.

Anne Arundel County adopted a set of regulations to conform to the law several years ago but there is still a good deal of confusion about what they are or how they are applied. Word-of-mouth information is often inaccurate and the County website has not made it easy to find the regulations.

The remainder of this article is a direct excerpt from the County’s regulation on the subject. To see the entire document access www.aacounty.org and type “Notice to Arborists” in the search bar. That is where the regulations are hidden.

Anne Arundel County Critical Area R e g u l a t i o n s a n d I n f o r m a t i o n excerpt…

What is the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area?

The Chesapeake Bay Critical Area is the area that extends a minimum of 1,000 feet landward of tidal waters and tidal wetlands of the Bay and its tributaries. The Critical Area buffer extends a minimum of 100 feet from tidal waters, wetlands and tributary streams and is expanded by steep slopes, wetlands and highly erodible soils.

State and local Critical Area legislation was enacted for the protection of the Bay and its tributaries. These laws regulate all construction and development activities, ground disturbance, removal or cutting of existing vegetation, and the installation of new or expanded lot coverage (asphalt, concrete, paving blocks and stone used for driveways, sidewalks, parking pads, etc.)

Within the first 100 feet Buffer or Expanded Buffer approval is not required for the following activities:

Planting vegetation Maintaining an existing lawn

Transplanting existing vegetation

Outside of the Buffer approval is not required for the following activities if they disturb less than 5,000 square feet and do not fall within areas containing steep slopes or wetlands:

Individual tree removal Removal of woody vegetation

When is County approval required?

Within the 100 foot buffer or expanded buffer County approval is required for the following activities:

Clearing or grading, including cutting or pruning of existing vegetation

Disturbance of steep slopes

Construction, alteration or relocation of a structure or lot coverage

Installation of stormwater management system

Except for routine grass cutting and maintenance of existing garden and landscaped areas, removal of existing vegetation within the Critical Area buffer or expanded buffer is subject to prior approval through the Forestry Section of Inspections and Permits.

Call a County Forester at 410-222-7441 before you cut or trim trees in the buffer area to be sure you are in compliance.

Thank You Neighbor!
