Free Dress Day
As usual Glen Iris Primary School is abuzz with
exciting events. I'm sure you have heard about the
new occupants of the chicken hutch! Last week our
chickens arrived, have settled in to their new home
and are happily laying eggs. On Monday they
ventured out into the vegie garden for the first time
and students now have the opportunity to meet them
at lunchtimes. Eventually our chickens will free
range in the garden area during the day.
Also on Monday, a group of very eager year 5 and 6
students, packed and ready, boarded three buses to
Level 4 Camp with their equally excited teachers,
parents and, of course, Meredith Carracher. All
reports from the camp have emphasised the fantastic
time they are having, building teamwork and
leadership skills and having fun!
As Lucy Gargano has taken leave for the remainder
of 2012, Bianca Dekert will now teach music and
performing arts to all grades. We thank Lucy for her
high quality program during Term 1 and wish her the
best.
Education Week planning is going on behind the
scenes and I'm sure you'll be marking Monday 21
May 6-7 pm in your diaries. This year our focus is
Science and more information about the night will be
forwarded soon. Last year the 'Cat in the Hat' joined
us BUT I can tell you that I have just had
confirmation that a world-renowned Scientist will
visit us to see the fantastic activities our teachers and
students have planned for parents.
Thank you to all parents who filled in the Transition
Survey. We are currently looking at the results and
comments to ensure our program continues to meet
the needs of our students. A summary report will be
This year’s Main Event
Please save the date for this year's Main Event
which will be held on Saturday 16 June in the
evening and will be in the form of a Trivia Night.
More information yet to come from Ginny
Robinson and a wonderful team of parents who are
so kindly organising this event for us.
Mother’s Day Stall
Jane O'Dwyer has been working incredibly hard
and has organised a magnificent Mothers Day
Stall, which will be held on Thursday 10 May for
all classes. A flier will be sent home about this
today requesting parent help to run the stall, so if
you are able to help out for a short period of time
on the day, that would be very much appreciated.
Fundraising
I'm not sure whether I mentioned this prior to now,
but in case I forgot I wanted to thank Kylie
Carnegie for running the Peppermint Parade
headband fundraiser in term 1 this year, which
raised a few hundred valuable dollars for our
school. I've seen a lot of little girls, my own
included, looking lovely in their new headbands.
Our Entertainment Guide fundraiser is still in full
swing. I have had a small delay from the company
updating our system, but expect that to be fixed
and the current orders out this week. A sample
copy of the book is available at the school office.

The Walkathon
At the end of last term the 2012 Walkathon was
completed, raising an incredible $7,073. What a
terrific effort and a round of "thank yous" to every
student, parent, teacher and helper who made this
event such a wonderful success. The monies go
toward making our school a better and brighter
learning environment, and will be used wisely for
the benefit of all students. The undisputed winners
BIG FAT SMILE - WARM KIDS Big Fat Smile, is running a winter coat campaign
in the lead up to winter. 'Warm Kids' is an
initiative to collect new or used winter coats to
donate to our agencies. Winter is a tough time of
year for disadvantaged families in particular. Some
families struggle to buy appropriate winter clothing
for their children (Perceptions of Poverty, The
Salvation Army, 2010).
If you have a coat, in reasonable condition, that
your child has outgrown you can donate your coat
at the Glen Iris School Collection point. (A
labelled box outside the Office.)
The SRC aim is to collect 15 coats.
SRC Fundraising
On the last day of Term 1 when the children
dressed up as movie/TV/rock stars $546.50 was
raised for the Murdoch Children’s Research
Institute. Thank you to all who contributed.
were: William, Prep D ($30 gift card) , Bronte 4C
($30 gift card) and Kiara 5/6B ($40 gift card) ....
congratulations to all of you.
Through the wonderful sponsorship efforts of
William V, the Class Pizza Prize has also been
won by Prep D. Well done William, you'll be very
popular when those pizzas come this Thursday.
Great work GIPS!
