Gratitude is Not Just for Thanksgiving Day

“At that, Jesus directed the people to sit down. He took the seven loaves and the fish. After giving

thanks, he divided it up and gave it to the people.” Matthew 15:35-36

As the holidays loom before us and Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, I can’t help but reflect on gratitude. The importance of gratitude goes beyond a picture-perfect Thanksgiving meal and get together. Many experts believe that

feeling grateful is also beneficial to your health. Studies show that practicing gratitude can be used to help lower blood pressure, stop smoking, fight addiction and reduce stress.

Gratitude makes people more patient and gives people the ability to delay gratification. Being grateful helps you sleep better especially if, instead of counting sheep, you count your blessings. Almost every benchmark of good sleep — including duration of sleep and the time it takes to fall asleep is improved by gratitude. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can help fend off depression by building more resilience and optimism. One study found that counting blessings and journaling about gratitude helped reduced the risk of depression in patients by 41% over six months. Gratitude is a blessing in relationships as well. Too often we focus on what is wrong with our spouse, significant other, children, etc. rather than focusing on gratefulness for what good things they do. While these factors are important, being thankful to God is by far the most important. Each Sunday we sing “Praise God from Whom all blessings flow” and it is true. Everything we have comes from God. At least five times Jesus thanked his Father – when the Cross was before Him, He gave thanks; when the people were hungry, He gave thanks; when God heard His prayer, He gave thanks. If the Creator of this world would offer thanks, should we not follow in His footsteps? When Jesus gave thanks, great things followed—salvation, the feeding of five thousand, and the renewed life of his friend, Lazarus.

How would each of our lives change if we got up each morning and prayed that we would be able to be grateful for everything that happens that day? We would be grateful for the good things that bring us joy; we would be happy for the not so good things because they grow our character; we would be happy for the normal things we take for granted each day such as the air we breathe, the food we eat, the clothes we wear. For the next month, take a small notebook with you each day and write down the people and things you are grateful for as you encounter them. Then each night as part of your prayers, read them to God. I have no doubt that blessings will follow and a good night’s sleep. Have a wonderful November. Pastor Jan

November 4th, All Saints Day On November 4, we will lift up the names of friends and relatives that have passed away in the last year. We will have a candle for each person and each name will be spoken aloud. If you have someone to lift up, please call the office.

November 17th, Gratitude Sunday What has God done in your life this year for which you are grateful? So many times, when we are asked what we are thankful for we automatically say our family and friends, our homes, food on the table. We are thankful for those things. However, each year God works in our lives in special ways. Maybe God helped you through a tough time or touched your heart in a special way. On November 17th we will be reading cards filled out by our congregation talking about ways God has been working in their lives this year. Start thinking about you would say.

The Redemption of Scrooge Small Group Study There are three different small groups studying our Advent study “The Redemption of Scrooge”. This is a fun DVD study that can help you think about this character is different ways and how his life applies to your life. Join us on Tuesdays from 12-1 beginning November 27th; Sunday at 9:00 am beginning December 2nd or Sunday evening at 4:00 pm. Sign up in the narthex soon so we can order a book for you.

December 1st, Christmas Parade Attention all walkers and singers! Join us on December 1st at 9:15 am at the Guava Street Athletic Complex. We and the puppets will be singing Christmas carols. Participants need to be able to walk about 1.5 miles to hand out small bags of candy with information about our church Christmas activities inside. We will also distribute this information to adults without children. We will also need a few cars to help us get back to the athletic complex. Help us make this a successful outreach event. Sign up in the narthex.

How will you use your talents in 2019? Help us update our records

During November we will distribute a volunteer form check list for each person. It is our hope that we will have 100% participation in volunteering for at least one selection. You will find this form in this newsletter and it will also be distributed in the bulletin. On the back of these volunteer forms you will find a form that each household needs to complete so that we can update our records as well as adding birthdays and anniversaries.
