Why should healthcare sectorengage in environmental issues?

- Laws and regulations, just like in any otherindustry

- Public sector - credibility- First do no harm- Profitability – reduced costs- Strong connection between health and

environmental issues- Significant environmental impact- Approximately 9 % of GDP in Sweden and

approximately 8 % in Denmark (15-17 % in USA )

• The carbon footprint of the European healthcare sector is at least 5% of total EU’s greenhouse gas emissions.

• For comparison: Direct emissions from aviation account for about 3% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

Organizations behind the innovation agenda:

Some of the findings

Sustainable Healthcare has a significant export potential.

Swedish sustainable healthcare is better known abroad than in Sweden.

The Swedish home market is rather weak.

In Sweden, many actors from the healthcare sector believe that the state procurement practices often favor big global companies.Purchasing organizations lack knowledge on how to procure sustainable solutions.

Innovation clusters, innovation centers etc. seldom have sustainability on their agenda.

Cross-sectoral field with many interested parties, none of which owns the question.

Weak connection with universities – Interdisciplinary character.

Lack of coordination and education.

Many healthcare suppliers lack knowledge about healthcare, its operation, organization and technical issues.

Sweden is a small country; we need a larger platform for collaboration.
