Good News Good News from St. John's from St. John's November 2016 From The Rector A Pilgrim Returns To borrow a familiar greeting from the Apostle Paul, "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ." It is so good to be back in your midst. I am so very grateful for the sabbatical time of rest, relaxation and study that you have all given me. I am especially grateful for the wonderful way that Pastor Sarah, Deacon Babs, the staff and the vestry have all worked together, as you continue to experience and share the transforming love of Jesus Christ with one another and with all whom God places in our path. I am excited to meet some new faces in the congregation, as well as greet all of you in person. I have been praying for all of you daily; and I have also felt your prayers. This sabbatical has provided me with much needed time to rest and reflect. After attending Deacon Babs' ordination in August, I headed up to Fallen Leaf Lake where I was able to spend time absorbing the natural beauty of this marvelous world that God has created for our delight. What a joy it was to go for long hikes; simply letting the rhythm of nature unfold. In September, I traveled to Chicago and Milwaukee, where I was able to spend time with family and friends. I had the opportunity to reunite with some of my childhood friends, many of whom I had not seen in over 40 years! How quickly we resumed out friendships (and remembered wonderful stories from our grade school days). I also had the opportunity to visit my brothers', parents' and grandparents' grave sites; offering prayers of thanksgiving for the way in which they had blessed my life. Of course, a trip to Chicago would not be complete without a trip to Wrigley Field (yes, I am enjoying the Cubs season to its fullest). I was able to sample those wonderful Chicago Style Hot Dogs, deep dish pizza, and juicy Italian beef sandwiches that nourished me in my youth. In early October, I had the opportunity to participate in a Kairos weekend at the California State Penitentiary at Sacramento (New Folsom). Approximately 40 men committed themselves to journey with Christ during that weekend. Yes, many of them are serving life terms, with no hope of being released; nonetheless, Christ has been able to touch their hearts and use them to bring love in an environment where love is not easily found. Finally, at the end of October I spent 10 days on retreat at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina, CA. Each day I would rise at 3:00 am to attend Vigils with our Cistercian Brothers, and then continue throughout the day to worship with them at Lauds, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline (the hours of the Daily Office set forward by St. Benedict). The rest of the day was spent is silence (some of you may find it hard to believe, but I was faithful to that practice). The daily regimen of prayer, study and silence has reaffirmed my commitment to live a life guided by our own Daily Office (in the Episcopal tradition we pray the hours of Morning Prayer, Noonday Prayer, Evening Prayer and Compline). In addition, I desire to continue my commitment to study our sacred Scriptures, as well as the writings of both ancient and contemporary writers, all of whom are able to help us in the journey of faith that we travel together. I am also committed to establishing periods of silent contemplation into my day, as I continually seek the Lord's guidance for my life. I invite all of you to join with me in practicing these disciplines as you are able. As I reflect back upon my time away, I want to affirm that I return to all of you with a renewed spirit and a desire to help all of us live into the mission we proclaim. With a continued commitment to prayer, study and worship, I look forward to serving in your midst. Together, let us experience and share the transforming love of Jesus Christ. I am blessed by God with this opportunity to serve as your priest, pastor and teacher. It is an honor to walk with you on this journey. Step by step we walk together. The Lord is in our midst. A Pilgrim Returns

To borrow a familiar greeting from the Apostle Paul, "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and fromthe Lord Jesus Christ." It is so good to be back in your midst.

I am so very grateful for the sabbatical time of rest, relaxation and study that you have all given me. I amespecially grateful for the wonderful way that Pastor Sarah, Deacon Babs, the staff and the vestry have allworked together, as you continue to experience and share the transforming love of Jesus Christ with one

Assistant Rector Report

As Cliff's sabbatical comes to an end, I want to thank you all for your love and support, not only for myself onmy journey, but also for Cliff as he embarked on his journey. Sabbaticals are a tremendous gift that we giveour clergy in the Episcopal Church and it takes sacrifice to make it great and fruitful for all. I cannot speak forCliff, but I imagine knowing how supportive you all have been during this time, helped him enter into hissacred time apart. As I begin to reflect on my experience over the past three months, I realize that thesabbatical journey will not end on November 1st. During his sabbatical Cliff chose to reflect on the idea of"pilgrimage" and if you think about pilgrimage it does not end when you come home. The experience ofpilgrimage continues through your lifetime but especially in the months that follow, the months that mark your

journey back home. I have had the privilege to journey on many pilgrimages over the past few years, including time in the Holy Landand South Africa. My time of greatest growth and learning has taken place back here at home, as the experiences I had influence myresponse to what I encounter at home. I am excited to see how Cliff's sabbatical pilgrimage will shape our journey together in the future.

On Sunday November 6th, many sacred moments will be marked. Our worship will be a combined celebration at 9:30 in which wewill all come together for Fr. Cliff's first Sunday back with us and to give praise and thanksgiving to God for the pledge of support you allhave made for our next year in ministry together. This is our consecration Sunday in which our pledges of support will be offered up toGod and celebrated and we will reaffirm our faith through our Baptismal Covenant. Many individuals and families have contributedgenerously to provide a wonderful brunch for all of us to enjoy following this service. Please let us know if you can attend by contactingthe church office to sign up. This is an exciting time for our congregation and I pray that you can share in this joyous time.

In Christ,Pastor Sarah

The Deacon's Dialogue

Trunk or Treat was a huge success again this year! I want to give a huge shout out to everyone whoworked so hard to make this a safe and welcoming event for our community! As we now turn ourthoughts toward the holidays I am once again reminded of all the blessings that God so graciouslyplaces in my life each and every day. It is important during this time of festive preparation that wedon't get overwhelmed by all the "busy-ness" of the upcoming season. Take some time to slow downand really look around your neighborhood, your school, or your workplace. Is there someone who looks

like they could use a friendly smile or a word of encouragement? We are all called into the world to work together forgood. As you go about the "busy-ness" of the days ahead, remember to share the transforming love of Christ. ShareChrist with everyone you encounter, use words if you must. "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according tohis purpose." Romans 8:28 Blessings, Deacon Babs

Senior Warden's Message

It's November? Are you kidding? Well I guess the weather being cooler and rainy should havegiven me a clue that it was coming. However, it sure did sneak up on me. November... really? Thanksgiving followed by Christmas? OK, I'm ready for it ... I think. This time of year is typically filled with both excitement and stress. The excitement is of friends andloved ones gathering for food and well ... more food. The stress is about preparing for their arrival andthe preparation of the above mentioned food. What I hope we can all fit in, in addition to shopping, isthe remembrance to be thankful. Thankful for this great nation that we live in, Thankful for the

freedoms that we enjoy, Thankful for our friends and families, Thankful for our church family, and most definitelythankful for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May God Bless us all this holiday season and help us to be goodstewards of the bounty that he has put before us. In His Service,Craig

Fall 2016 Stewardship Campaign invites us to Believe, Care, andDo.

As St. John's enters into its Stewardship season, parishioners have anopportunity to reflect on how our beliefs translate into how we care and whatwe do. Specifically:* How are we fulfilling our Baptismal Covenant?* In what ways is God calling us to put our faith into action?* What time, talent, and/or treasure does the church need from us tofurther share God's message of love in our community?

November 6 The Very Rev. Cliff Haggenjos will speak to us onstewardship.

On November 6, parishioners can offer their pledge card at thealtar during one combined service starting at 9:30 am. Followingthe service, all are welcome to a Celebration Brunch.

As we prepare for 2017, let's reflect on what God is putting on our heartsand discover how we are called to participate in the life of the church.

It begins with Peter, a devotedman of faith, as he is called tot he mission of a lifetime, one that takes him galaxies away from his wife, Bea. Peterbecomes immersed in them mysteries of an astonishing new environment, overseen by an enigmatic corporationknown only as USIC. His work introduces him to a seemingly freindly native population hungry for Peter's teachings --his Bible is their "book of strange new things." However Bea's letters from home become alarming. Suddenly, theirseparation is measured by an otherworldly distance, one newly discovered world, and another in a state of collapse. What is our responsibility to those closest to us?
