The ArrangerRobert D. McCashin, DMA, is Professor Emeritus and former Director of Orchestras and Professor of Conducting at James Madison University. He recently retired from academe after a 43-year career of conducting and applied string teaching at the college/university level. He was awarded JMU’s Distinguished Teacher Award for the College of Visual and Performing Arts in 2015. From 1992 through 2016, Dr. McCashin was Music Director for the JMU Symphony, Chamber Orchestra and Opera Orchestra. He taught all relevant orchestral conducting and academic courses within the MM and DMA orchestral conducting curricular core, as well as applied studio strings.
Dr. McCashin, a violinist, has been a successful writer and arranger of educational publications, having now published more than 100 works for the Grade I through V educational performance levels. He has been a regular guest conductor for a variety of orchestral ensembles, including regional and all-state orchestras across the U.S. as well as regional professional orchestras. He has been invited to present more than 30 conducting workshops and seminars for national and state level teacher conferences throughout the U.S. Dr. McCashin is a Founder, Past President and former National Board member for the College Orchestra Directors Association.
About the MusicArchangelo Corelli, born in 1653, was an Italian violinist and composer. Records indicate that he was from the small town of Fusignano. His relatives and family were well-to-do, but not wealthy. He was raised by his mother, due to his father’s passing shortly before his birth. There is little reliable documentation about his childhood. Some accounts indicate that he moved to Bologna (a cultural mecca of arts and music) by age 14. His formal musical training was almost exclusively as a violinist and he reportedly studied with highly respected violinists/masters while in Bologna. The following years are a bit of a mystery, but it is noted that Corelli was active in Rome (1675) as a violinist-composer. He worked for many royals over the years; church cardinals, queens, dukes, and the like. Following a highly successful career, Corelli passed at age 60 and was notably wealthy (money, and collections of both works of art and fine violins).
Suite in D Major is a diligent transformation of his Sonata a Quattro (WoO 4), originally for trumpet, violins and continuo, from a manuscript dated ca 1660s. This arrangement represents four of the five movements of the original work. It is set here for string orchestra, as an introduction to Corelli’s compositional style. Movements can be performed as a complete four-movement concert entry, or as separate movements or sets of movements. In either case, this is a delightful and approachable addition to the repertoire!
