EACHYEAR, as the UW Law Schooladmissions process becomes increasinglycompetitive, the students who are selected

to enroll are a truly impressive group. Theirbackgrounds, interests, talents and achievementsmake for some remarkable reading.

The Class of 2004, which entered this pastfall, comprised 236 students. Of these, 108 werewomen, or 46 percent. Wisconsin residents madeup 67 percent; remaining students hailed form26 states and various other countries.A totalof 103 undergraduate schools, including HanoiLaw University, Korea University, Seoul NationalUniversity and the University of Skopje, wererepresented. Eighty-three first-year studentsgraduated from UW System schools, including60 from UW-Madison.And while statistics cantell only part of the story, here's a remarkable one:fully 20 percent of this year's class do not havea parent who graduated from college. On theother hand, 11 percent have one or more parentswho are lawyers.

The average age of our first-years was 26,with a range from 21 to 46. Two-thirds of themspent at least one year between completing theirundergraduate studies and beginning law school,with a quarter having spent five or more yearsin other pursuits.

On the next pages, you will see what some ofthose pursuits are.We invite you to read the listsof occupations, hobbies, honors and degrees, andnote the diversity of experiences and professionsof our law students. Each of these individualsenriches our law school community immeasurably.
