For the past four years we have had the great blessing and gift of having an intentional community of young adults living in Ascension House. It’s hard to believe that Alex Barton and Gregory Stark, two of our first residents, graduated from seminary and have been ordained as transitional deacons on June first and that Noah Sutter, another previous resident, will be married to Anna Risch here at Ascension on July 22. The four current residents, Aaron, Lauren, Mo, and Steve, will be moving out by the end of August thus bringing to a close this wonderful season of intentional community at Ascension House. In order to celebrate each of the eleven beautiful people who have lived in Ascension House over the past four years we will have a festive Eucharist on Sunday July 23 followed by a lunch reception (there will be only one service at 10:30am). Many of those who have lived in the house will join us for the celebration. We are looking forward to celebrating all they are and all the memories we have made together. The vestry and I have prayerfully and carefully explored several options for further use of Ascension House and have concluded that for the next stage of our ministry it might be helpful to again have the house used as a rectory, a residence for the priest. Roger and I, also having prayerfully considered the dedication and love you all have for God and this church and the presence of the Holy Spirit moving with and through Ascension, have agreed to put our home in University Heights up for sale in order to be able to move into the rectory in 2018. A committee has assessed the current state of the house and made a complete plan for renovation and repairs which includes some big ticket items such as energy efficient windows, air conditioning, kitchen and bathroom updates, floor and plaster repair and refinishing as well FROM REV.

A committee has assessed the current state of the house and made a complete plan for renovation and repairs which includes some big ticket items such as energy efficient windows, air conditioning, kitchen and bathroom updates, floor and plaster repair and refinishing as well

Many years ago when I was a student in Heidelberg, Germany, it always interested me how cars were always gathered around the Heilige Geist (Holy Ghost) Church in the center of the town. It was truly in the center of the community. Now its gratifying to pull into the parking lot at Ascension, and see all the cars in the lot. During the school year, cars belonging to students at St. Ed’s, the AA groups, the summer lunch program, the Montessori school, etc. It seems almost like Ascension has become the center of our community. In many ways, the old-time churches were the center of the community. The church where my family attended -Zion Church – had not only social halls, but a bowling alley, gym, school, etc, much as Ascension did years ago.

It’s good to see the activity happening at Ascension once again. Six short years ago it seemed like we were in “Death Valley Days.” Now we are using the entire building once again, we have numerous activities, such as Frankfurter Fridays, movies on the lawn, and many others. We have a Sunday school once again, and a nursery (in the Good Shepherd Room for the toddlers. The Montessori school is expanding and meets on the lower level.

Truly, it appears that God is not finished with the Church of the Ascension.

Sincerely, Gil Newlands, Senior Warden

FROM GIL NEWLANDS, SENIOR WARDEN

FROM REV. VINCENT BLACKas several other items involving painting, landscaping, etc. A conservative budget of $120,000.00 has been presented to the vestry in order to complete this work. Although this is a great deal of money, it is needed to address years of deferred maintenance and to honor the dedication of those who have gone before us and left Ascension the legacy of this stately home.

We currently have $85,250.00 in hand, $40,000.00 a grant from the Diocese of Ohio and $45,250.00 from parishioners and others. Our goal is to have the total estimated cost of $120,000.00 in hand by the first of September so we still need $34,750.00.

Anything raised over the total cost of the renovation will be placed in a special priest fund which will secure Ascension's ability to pay for clergy as we become self-sustaining. The Diocese currently continues to pay for more than half of my salary but that will not be the case indefinitely. The hope is to build a reserve that will enable Ascension to move forward as the diocesan supplemental funds decrease.

I am asking that each of you consider a gift. Anything you can do will help us reach our goal. Please indicate on contributions that the gift is intended for the rectory campaign.

We are at a major turning point in our ministry here at Ascension. Having the rectory available for the priest’s residence contributes toward the compensation, so that the rectory will end up paying for itself. Having the rectory vacant or trying to rent it out can present problems for the parish that we do not want. In contrast, having the priest living in the neighborhood offers lots of possibilities as we continue to build an identity as the neighborhood church for all.

Please feel free to talk with me or any of the vestry members about this project and how you might help. Your generosity is deeply valued and greatly appreciated.

God bless you.

Yours in Christ, Father Vincent

A “200 project” for the celebration of the Diocesan Anniversary

And a sort of “easy-peasy” one at that. We’ve started to collect empty pill bottles for a health clinic in our companion Diocese of Belize and have filled our original collection box (not 200 yet) – and we’d like to make this a multiple of 200 since the clinic has no option to purchase new containers. The collection box is in the Church office during the week and may show up at other locations from time to time. There is no target deadline for completion, any color plastic is fine. Questions may be directed to Carol Culp. [email protected]
