FROM PASTOR GINNY Thoughts on Puerto Rico
As I write this article I am in the midst of preparations for the work trip to
Puerto Rico the week of September 9. Vaccinations, packing plans, bug
spray and sunscreen, work gloves, tools (do I really need them?),
decisions between one suitcase or two to bring extra equipment and/or
supplies??? How hot will it be? I’m of two minds – excited to be going on
this trip, but wondering why I made the decision to go. I’m too busy.
There is a new trial worship service being planned for that begins the day
after I return, and a leadership retreat for the congregation the next
weekend. It’s an inconvenient time.
But as I make these preparations, I’m reminded that’s the way of it, is it
not? Inconvenient interruption? It would always be so much easier to not
alter our lives to respond to our neighbor’s need or frankly for that matter,
just to be in relationship with our neighbor. That’s not saying that
everybody should drop everything and go to Puerto Rico. Not at all! We
are called to share in God’s work by loving and serving those in need

NEW TO NEW HOPE CLASS Sunday, September 30
12:45 to 2:30 pm
You are invited to come to a ‘New to New Hope’ class following the Table
of Hope worship. ‘New to New Hope’ will offer an opportunity for you to
get to know some people from New Hope, be introduced to many of our
ministries, study God’s Word and learn about the Lutheran lens within the
Christian faith. We encourage you to attend Table of Hope for lunch! Child
care will be offered.
‘New to New Hope’ is intended for both those who are interested in learn-
ing more about the gathering of Lutheran Christians in Columbia and also
for those who would like to make a more formal commitment by joining
this community. New members will be received on several Sundays in Oc-
tober. Please RSVP at [email protected] / 410.381.4673.

nearby and around the world. It means going to the grocery store for the Day Resource Center or to
help feed the folks at Baltimore Station. It involves volunteering for the Cold Weather Shelter, spending
the night on the couch, or cooking dinner for the community. It includes volunteering for the reading
program at the local elementary school. The list goes on…Inconvenient interruptions…
Yet also the way of it in encountering our neighbor is we end up meeting Christ in the serving! In the 25th
chapter of Matthew, Jesus equates himself to those imprisoned, the hungry and thirsty so that what we
do to serve such neighbors in need, it’s as if we do to Jesus himself. We discover Jesus in the most
unexpected places in those inconvenient interruptions. As the famous prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
states, “For it is in giving that we receive.”
My prayer for us is that we will be open to many such inconvenient interruptions in our lives for our
neighbor’s sake.

Introducing the “Three Sides” Podcasts
Typically, it’s said there are two sides to every story. But often a
middle or third side of the story is revealed, providing another per-
spective to consider. Three Sides is a monthly podcast featuring
stories from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). As
a church that believes God is calling us into the world – together,
Three Sides will present diverse voices from across the ELCA. Listen at your convenience as unique
stories from the many expressions of the church are shared.
• From our members whose lives are grounded in faith, love of God and neighbor.
• From our congregations that work every day to share the love of Christ with all God’s people.
• From our global companions and partners that join us as we work to build up Christ’s church
throughout the world.
This is another new verbal way to share stories of the work we are doing as a church. Visit https://
www.livinglutheran.org/podcast/ to learn more about it and listen to podcast that have already aired.
SOCIAL MEDIA SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 Sunday, September 30, 2018 is Social Media Sunday: a day when Christians across the nation are en-
couraged to use social media to share their faith. Use the hashtag #SMS18 to tell your friends what
church is all about for you. Just as Martin Luther used the printing press to proclaim the gospel, today
we can use Social Media to do the same.
On Social Media Sunday, our youth will be out in force to help you take a “selfie” picture to post on any
of your social media accounts.
In the meantime you can:
Like our New Hope Lutheran Facebook page and/or sign up for our email list
by emailing your information to [email protected]

NEW BIBLE STUDY: LOOKING AT THE BIBLE THROUGH
THE EYES OF A PHYSICIST Leader: Kristi Keller
Join Kristi for a great Bible Study

The Bible is a story about relationships. The central focus is God's relationship with humans. There is
also relationship between God and God's creation and humanity's relationship to God's creation. This
Bible study will look at topics such as creation, care of God's creation, miracles, free will, relationships
to other human beings and the wonder of God's universe not only through the theological message of
the Bible but also through modern physics and even game theory. Along the way, we may even look at
modern topics such as artificial intelligence and possible life on other planets. The Bible study format

Congregational Care
For the 8th consecutive year, Stephen Ministry is offering
DIVORCECARE AND DIVORCECARE FOR KIDS (DC4K) Tuesdays beginning September 11
DivorceCare is a biblically-based adult seminar and support group. Those at any stage of divorce
(from initial separation, recently divorced, or divorced for many years) may find that DivorceCare can
help with the healing process. The sessions are co-ed, allowing for multiple viewpoints and providing
balance. Weekly videos feature renowned divorce experts discussing topics such as depression, anger,
forgiveness, financial survival, loneliness and other divorce-related issues. Facilitators who have experi-
enced divorce lead confidential group discussions.
Children between the ages of 5-12 can participate in DC4K while their parent attends DivorceCare. This
parallel program provides a safe, neutral place where children learn to rest secure in God's love. Both
groups explore the same weekly topic. A children's video discusses divorce from the child's perspec-
tive. Children also enjoy crafts, stories, music, games, and other fun activities designed to help them
recognize and express their feelings. Compassionate adult DC4K leaders offer support and encourage-
ment. Materials are provided to help single parents follow-up with home discussion.
All are welcome! Registration is required. For additional information or to register, please send a confi-
dential email to [email protected] or contact the church office at 410-465-2977. Infor-
mation and registration is also available at the following websites: www.divorcecare.org /
