My own personal term is Chag-ed out. Is there a way to rate these holidays? As I write this, it almost seems a bit heretical, like rating each of your children or trying to find which holiday you can skip. I’m not suggesting that. I’m just looking at which holiday gets attention or time in which areas. One measure might be the length, amount of extra prayers, or additions to the synagogue services. For example, there is rabbinic discussion in the Talmud of those holidays important enough to include, or rate if you will, Hallel in the morning service. All Those Holidays, Festivals, and High Holidays Once again we come to the time of year when one Jewish holiday follows another until, by the end, we are nearly wiped out. Here’s a table of many of the Celebrations, and Jewish Holidays. Torah Readings Holiday Aliyot Additional readings Service Additions Weekday 3 (Monday, Thursday)

Rosh Chodesh 4 Hallel (short) New month Channukah 3 Haftarah Hallel (short) Festivals 5 Haftarah, Hallel, Yizkor book of Ruth, Kohelet, or Song of Songs Tish B’Av 3 Haftarah Book of Lamentations Rosh Hashanah 6 Haftarah piyutim and additions to musaf Yom Kippur 6 Haftarah Yizkor, Kol Nidrei Neila ‘Modern Holidays’ Hallel (many do) Yom Haaztmaut (Israel Independence) Since it’s a once-a-week observance, we might not think about it, but Shabbat has the most aliyot. And the musaf service after the Torah reading is, in fact, an addition. The word musaf means addition in Hebrew and follows whenever the Torah is read. Shabbat 7 Haftarah Musaf There is one further metric of holiday observance we can use and that is total time immersed in a holiday. In the Hebrew Bible, the word מןעד, moed, is the term used for festivals and more literally it means appointed time. How much time is spent in shul, or observing a holiday? The clear winner in that category is Sukkot. A whole week of eating in the Sukkah adds up. It’s also considered a mitzvah ‘to dwell’ in the Sukkah. In Israel and places where it’s warm, safe, and dry enough, many Jews sleep in their Sukkah. Here in North America, in modern parlance, we are more likely to unfortunately be - chillin’ in the Sukkah! Chag Sameach, Cantor Henry Shapiro

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin There was a time when I thought the High Holy Days were made up of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur; over and out, end of story. Being a Jew for me was straight forward and easy. Then, I became more familiar about Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. In fact, it’s only recently that I learned how to pronounce Shemini Atzeret. Can you imagine telling your boss you need to take off for Shemini Atzeret? So why do you need the day off and Goldstein in accounting never takes the day? Go figure? The High Holy Days have been terrific this year. Cantor Shapiro keeps the service moving at a great pace and his added bits of information and humor makes the service enjoyable and meaningful. Many thanks to: Hal Lederman our Ritual Chairman and our Gabbai during the Torah reading; Allan Goppman and Charlie Rubin for reading the Haftorah and Torah respectively; and of course to all of you for accepting your High Holiday honors. While I’m thanking people, many thanks for returning your Kol Nidre Pledges so quickly. Remember, we need to repair two (2) of our Torahs and they may take a large sum of the money pledged. Please make your pledges larger than normal and then get them in soon. If you wish, you can email your pledge amount to Gail Levine at: [email protected] I will let you know about our Torah repairs as soon as we get an estimate of cost. I will keep you posted as we proceed. And thank you again….. Don’t forget about our PJC Goes to the Theatre in December. We are going to see the musical comedy, The Marvelous Wonderettes. We will be seeing the show at the Theatre Factory in nearby Trafford. After the show it’s off to Gail and Alan Levine’s for dessert. It should be a fun event, tickets will sell out so watch for the show details soon. Meanwhile, here’s a show trailer: https://youtu.be/9TxwzOH2v38 The Pittsburgh Chapter of Hadassah will return to PJC for their annual Horse Races in November. They could hold their annual fundraiser anywhere, but they seem to love coming back to Parkway Jewish Center. It’s a fun night that includes dinner, schmoozing with friends and of course betting on the ponies. See you in November. I hope my horse comes in and then we’ll talk again……. A note from Efrem Schwartz :Thanks to our entire PJC family, but especially Diane Bloomfield and Leslie Rubin for making the 75th Anniversary of my Bar Mitzvah such a beautiful experience for Elaine and me.
