Getting your Kids Involved in Developing a Budget

Pre-Schoolers Visit Bank

for Behind the Scenes Tour

Start teaching your kids early on about all the things that cost money and how important it is to track and monitor where their money goes. A great way to do this is to have them actively engaged in the family budget or doing their own personal budget. Once you have established goals you can help your child develop a budget to ACHIEVE THESE GOALS.

FIRST ACTIVITY How Expensive am I?This exercise is helpful for teaching your kids or tweens about all of the expenses associated with taking care of them and the family, even including the family dog.

SECOND ACTIVITY Family Budget Role Play Kids should complete the following activity to expose them to principles of developing a budget. Give the following scenario to your kids:You are the head of the household. You are responsible for creating a monthly budget for your family for the month of June, 2011. Your budget must be realistic and you must live within your means. Next create a spreadsheet that reflects your family’s monthly income and expenditures.

THIRD ACTIVITY Savings The remainder of your income after all expenses are paid will go into a savings account. Indicate the amount you will put in your savings account, monthly.

FOURTH ACTIVITY Monitor Spending After you have gathered all of the above information, create a spreadsheet showing your budget. Your spreadsheet should contain formulas so you can plug in different numbers each month and your spreadsheet will accurately calculate the current month’s expenses. Don’t let your children get into the bad habit of putting into savings only what’s left over at the end of the budget period. With most teenagers, there’s typically nothing left over!Sit down together periodically to review the budget you’ve developed. Be sure your kids understand the importance of maintaining this budget to avoid overspending and debt trouble. But also remind them that it isn’t carved in stone. If their favorite band is coming to town and they want to splurge on a concert ticket, they can simply cut back on other expenses for a month.

Students from The Learning Lodge recently had a tour of 1st Advantage Bank complete with treats and snacks. Two groups of 20 pre-schoolers went behind the scenes at the bank including testing out the microphone at the drive-thru and designing a mock paper bill. Bank employees spoke about the importance of saving and provided piggy banks to get them started. They also toured the vault, drive-up, and had a meeting in the board room. After talking about the different features on a bill, each child decorated a fake bill with a self-portrait. “The kids were excited to actually see the drive-thru tubes on the inside,” notes Jacinda Kirk, Assistant Director of the Learning Lodge. “They were fascinated with all aspects of the day, especially the money counter.”The Learning Lodge is located at 140 T.R. Hughes Blvd. in O’Fallon, MO. The educational center offers year-round child-care and pre-school featuring Spanish, physical education and computer classes as part of it curriculum. Barry Ginsburg was working as an attorney when he decided to change course and become a small business owner. He bought Midtown Home Improvements in 1999 from its founder, a former client. Ginsburg and his business partner, Pat Melson, now operate the company located at 130 North Central Dr. in O’Fallon, MO.

Midtown offers a full range of home improvement products and services including roof systems, fences, windows, siding, decks, and kitchen, bath and lower level remodeling, and roof systems and fences. The company recently moved to a 12,000 square foot building, just a couple of miles from its original location. The move was necessary so they could expand their warehouse and in-house fence and deck assembly work area.

“When I came here, Midtown already had a great history of taking care of customers,” notes Ginsburg. “Now in our 21st year, we continue to provide great service and great value—referrals are one of our biggest sources of new business.”

Midtown employs 20 full-time and 40 part-time workers. They serve homes and businesses within a 50-mile radius of St. Louis. Melson estimates that more than half of their business comes from St. Charles County.

“People want to stay in their homes now so they want to make improvements such as a new kitchen or bathroom,” he adds.

Midtown gives back to the community by donating to Habitat Restore, area high schools and various booster clubs and charities.

Ginsburg and Melson count on 1st Advantage Bank for their financial needs. “The employees at the bank offer personal, professional service,” says Ginsburg.

“Everyone is committed to making banking convenient and efficient for us,” he adds. “That makes running our business easier. It is so productive to be able to pick up the phone and talk directly with our bankers as opposed to a computer.”
