FRY ELEMENTARY APRIL 2014 2

From the desk of Mr. Younce

This newsletter marks the start of

our spring season at Fry – the last

quarter of the school year is

underway and warmer weather is

right around the corner! We have

had a great year at Fry thus far and

look forward to continuing to engage

and challenge our amazing students

to surpass expectations.

Keep in mind as the weather warms that more of our students will be walking, biking and rolling to school. The car line will diminish greatly

(pause for a collective roar of excitement there) and the overall energy level at school will increase after the long winter season. Please remind your children of your parental expectations for how they arrive and leave from school. Keep in mind that bikes and scooters should be locked to the bike racks to avoid theft. Also remember that parent-initiated changes to student dismissal often confuse the children – please try to keep dismissal patterns as consistent as possible. Warm weather often means that more family dogs make the walk to school with parents. Please be sure to keep you dogs leashed and under absolute control at all times, as not all children share an equal love of furry four-legged friends…

Finally, we are still in the midst of the 5Essentials Survey window. In order for our school data to be made public we need 30% of our families to participate in the survey. At this writing we are approaching that number, but we’d love to have your input nonetheless as we prepare for the future. Be sure to check out the many emails sent from Fry during the month of March for details on taking the survey.

Here’s to a great spring at Fry!

Spring Picture Day

Spring Picture Day is Tuesday, April

15th. If you signed up through the Gifts

of Time to volunteer for the event,

please look out for an email from Simki

Patel in early April for details. There are

more volunteers than needed but we will do our best to

accommodate as many volunteers as we can.

We are excited to announce that the entire school will

participate in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering

and Math)

Exploration. These

explorations are

workshops that will

provide the children

with a STEM

related, hands-on

experience. Presenters include Fry staff and parents,

volunteers from the community, High Touch High Tech of

Chicagoland, Bricks 4 Kidz, Engineering for Kids, and

Mathnasium of Naperville.

We have two separate days for STEM and the students

are grouped into two grade levels per program:

Thursday April 10th: 12:45 - 1:45 p.m. - Second and

Third grade

Thursday April 10th: 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. - Kindergarten and

First grade

Thursday April 17th: 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. - Fourth and Fifth

grade

The PTA has generously funded this hands on, enriching

experience, and the students and staff are eagerly

awaiting the STEM Explorations.

If you have any questions or are interested in assisting a

presenter, please feel free to contact Mrs. Jeanne

Gerdisch @ [email protected].

Reflections

We are pleased to announce that Karina Kopacz (1K) has advanced to the National level in the PTA Reflections art competition. This is the first time a Fry student has made it to the National level. Her entry was in the Video Production titled, "Spirit of the American Navy". Congratulations Karina!

Two students have received Honorable Mention at the State Level:

Sajed Aziz (5D) for his photography entry titled, “Believe, Dream, Inspire”.

Yash Chitambar (2M) for his musical composition titled, "Jumpy Dance".

Congratulations to these students and to all of the students who participated this year in the Reflections program.

Econ Illinois Economic Concepts Poster Contest

We are pleased that two of our students have been selected for state recognition in the 2013-14 Econ Illinois Economic Concepts Poster Contest. This year, more than 3,800 students from nearly 70 schools illustrated their understanding of concepts like producers & consumers and goods & services in five regional contests. The top 24 entries from each regional competition were submitted for judging in a state-wide competition. From these entries, twelve state winners were selected, along with twelve honorable mention entries. The top twelve winning drawings will be featured in a 2014-15 school-year calendar.

A list along with images of the twelve State Winners and State Honorable Mention entries will soon be posted on Econ IL’s web site at: http://www.econed-il.org/icee/econposter_winners.shtml. Awards will be distributed during the months of April-May. Student Grade Concept Award Rithik Thekiniath Grade 2 : Goods & Services State Winner
