FROM INDONESIAN LANGUAGE ROOM
Kelas Bahasa Indonesia, by Year 10 of 2016
Over the course of four years of learning Bahasa Indonesia, we must say that the experience has been a special
one for us Year 10 students. Starting with the basics of learning how to introduce ourselves, we gradually moved
up to writing complex pieces about the environment, health and nutrition (in which we had practical cooking
lessons), friendship and our hopes and dreams. We had an Indonesian Language Teaching Assistant (ILTA)
came to our school regularly to enhance our experience with both formal and spoken language. As well as an
authentic classroom experience, we also had the opportunity to extend our knowledge beyond the school as we
participated in several external activities including Indonesia Day, concerts by Indonesian stars such as Michael
J, learning Gamelan at the Indonesian Embassy and learning a traditional Balinese dance by a professional
dancer.
At the start of Year 7, we were not entirely aware of the cultural and linguistic benefits that we would gain by the
end of Year 10.The skills we developed from this course will continue on past our high school education. For us,
it was not just about learning the language itself; it was more about opening up our minds to different aspects of
the culture. We strongly encourage students to take on this learning experience like we did. The end result is
guaranteed to be a good one. We wish to thank our dear teachers Pak Clynes and Ibu Rozita for taking us to the
wonderful journey of learning Bahasa Indonesia.

Lebaran Idul Fitri
The students of Indonesian
language had the opportunity to
celebrate and had a taste of
‘Lebaran Idul Fitri’ traditions
with their classmates when they
started school in Term 3.
Lebaran is celebrated in
Indonesia and in the world. It is
also known as ‘Eid Mubarak’ or
‘Hari Raya’ by some cultures. It
is a celebration of self-control
and self-purifying after a month
of fasting. Students definitely are
looking forward to celebrate
Lebaran again in the future.
Michael J was in town!
Indonesian language
students had a great
time practising their
Indonesian language
through songs with
Michael J in
September. This
exciting event was
sponsored by the
Indonesian Embassy
where students
were entertained by
Michael
Jakarimilena who
came from Papua to
meet Indonesian
language students in
ACT.
Hari Indonesia 2016
The Year 7-10 students
celebrated Indonesia Day in
September. This year, the
students went to Australian
National University to join
Indonesian Language
students from other ACT
schools. They were involved
in workshops and had the
opportunity to learn some
cultural of Indonesia.
Students were served
Indonesian cuisine for their
lunch. This event was
sponsored by the Indonesian
Embassy.
Selamat Tinggal kakak Dian
We farewelled Kakak Dian Lutfiana who spent Term 2 and 3 with
students as our Indonesian Language Teaching Assistant (ILTA).
This program was sponsored by the Indonesian Embassy in order to
promote Indonesian language and culture at school.
“Festival Indonesia” 29th October 2016
Indonesian Festival 2016 was held at the
Indonesian Embassy on Saturday 29th October.
One of the highlights for the day was a
competition for primary and secondary students
in ACT to make ‘Ondel-Ondel’ puppets. These
puppets are normally large and are often
performed as folk performance at festivals. It
originated from Betawi (now is known as
Jakarta), Indonesia.
Year 10 Indonesian language students took this
challenge and produced 3 incredible Ondel-
Ondel puppets in a very short period of time (2
lessons and 2 lunch hours). As part of the Unit
Lingkungan (Environment), they made the
puppets using mostly recycled materials such as
cardboard boxes, plastic bags, newspapers and
recycled clothing.
The public at the Festival Indonesia were very
fascinated by the students’ Ondel-Ondel
puppets and we were very proud as the
students won the First prize!
Selamat Kelas 10.
What Year 7 of 2016 thought about Indonesian Language…
I learnt Indonesian
because I thought I could
use it in the future and
communicate to people
from a different country.
By Racso
I learnt
Indonesian to
be better. I
thought it was
going to be
hard. I enjoy
some lessons.
By Joel
I learnt Indonesian
because my teacher in
Year 5 made us write to
Indonesian students
(Poppy was in Indonesia
at that time). We wrote
to them and I learnt
some words like Inggris
and stuff and I wanted to
know more Indonesian.
By Manav
I enjoy learning Bahasa
Indonesia as it is fun and easy.
Ibu Rozita is the best!
By Sneha
I was originally going to do Japanese but now I feel lucky because I
didn’t have to study such a hard language. Indonesian is very easy.
I enjoy Indonesian lessons a lot because Ibu Rozita makes learning
Indonesian easy and easily understandable.
By Lucy
I enjoy Indonesian because I was
able to learn the basics of the
language while having fun in class.
Year 7
I was put in Bahasa
Indonesia because
there was no other
language that
caught my interest
but my experience in
Indonesian class was
really good.
-Year 7
I found learning Bahasa Indonesia an
enjoyable experience. I really enjoyed
when we celebrated Indonesian
traditions by bringing food and
celebrating. Also I really enjoyed
learning the vocabulary and putting it
into practice.
By Amy
I was put into
Indonesian, but I
love it. I wasn’t
sure what to
expect but it is
really fun. I love
every lesson with
my class.
-Year 7
I learnt Indonesian because it is an easy,
enjoyable language that I have heard a lot
about. My expectations of Indonesian were
very high and it definitely met my
expectations. In Indonesian class, I have
many friends to share my learning
experience. I enjoy my lessons as my teacher
makes my learning fun. I encourage people
to do Indonesian
By Myra
I enjoy Indonesian
because it is fun and it is
easy. And if you learn
Indonesian studies you
get a lot of good job offers
when you are older.
-Year 7
I would encourage other students to do Bahasa
Indonesia because as well as it being heaps of fun;
it’s easy and quick to learn. Knowing Indonesian
opens up tons of opportunities for jobs worldwide. I
would definitely recommend it.
