“From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Psalm 90:2).

Jeremiah 10:10; Deuteronomy 4:39

Young Teen

A child may ask innocently, “Where did God come from?” But do you know the answer? How old is God? Was there ever a time when God did not exist? Everyone has a birthday—everyone but God. God has no birthday. In spite of how difficult it is for our human minds to grasp, the fact is God has always existed. Be fore there were ever any stars, God existed. Be fore there was ever a sunrise on this planet, God existed. Being everlasting is part of what makes Him God.

Someone has attempted to describe eternity with the following illustration. Imagine

that it is possible for a tiny sparrow to fly in outer space.

Now imagine that one million miles from earth there is a block of granite

one hundred times the size of the Rock of Gibraltar. Every one hundred years the little sparrow flies to this distant rock, sharpens its beak on the stone and returns to earth. The time it would take for the sparrow to wear the granite block down to the size of a grain of sand would not equal the blink of an eye in eternity.

In England if you were invited to be part of an “IHMS” assignment, you would have the honor of being “In Her Majesty’s Service.” In the United States an invitation engraved with the President’s insignia would mean you are invited to attend an event hosted by the President of the United States. Regardless of how prestigious these invitations may be, they are given by mere human dignitaries whose power and importance may last only until there is a change in the government or until that particular dignitary dies. However, the book of Revelation records an invitation from the Son of God who says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). This is an invitation for anyone to receive Jesus, God’s Son as his Savior and serve the eternal God.

ow do you usually celebrate your birth day? Perhaps, your parents make a big thing out of it and give

you a party. They might plan to give you a special gift this year. But what would it be like not to have a birthday? “That’s ridiculous,” you say. “Everyone has a birthday!” Well, not exactly everyone—God does not have one. Isaiah 57:15 calls God “the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy.” That means God lives in (inhabiteth) eternity which means He is eternal. In eternity there is no yesterday or tomorrow; there is only an ever-present now. Since God is eternal, that means He had no beginning, and He will have no end. Therefore, God has no birthday. Do not worry if you find the subject of eternity difficult to understand. The most developed human minds are incapable of fully understanding the subject. Regardless of how difficult it may be to think of God’s being eternal, it is still a reality—a

reality we accept by faith.

An actress once said that a person can be a god.

Mormonism claims that God was once a human being.

New Age religions say that everything is God.

The Bible says:

“Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else” (Deuteronomy 4:39).

God’s eternalness is one

of the attributes that makes Him God. When Moses asked God His name, God said, “I AM.” In the book of Isaiah, God is called “the first and. . . the last” and the

“lofty One that inhabiteth eternity” (Isaiah 44:6; 57:15).

In Psalm 90:2 the psalmist wrote that God is “from everlasting to everlasting.”

These biblical titles affirm that God exists without a beginning, and He will have no ending of life.

A wedding band or other circle may be a symbol for eternity because it has neither a beginning point nor an ending point. So it is with God. We say that God is eternal because there has never been neither will there ever be a time when there is not God. Mankind, having been created in the image of God, differs from God. Every person has a point of beginning. There was a time when you did not exist. But you will never cease to exist. We call this “everlasting.” Everlasting may be symbolized by a line segment beginning at a point but ending with an arrow.

This explains why sin is so much a problem for all of us. You see, sin separates us from God. Unsaved sinners will exist or live forever in hell separated from God. Only saved people will live forever with God. Read John 3:14-18.
