It’s all about the AIR

• You can live without food for 3 months; without water for 3 days; but without AIR no more than 3 minutes.

• You can choose the source of food and water; but have no choices about the air to breath.

The Professional Solution

7

• 76 multi-function stations (TW)• huge and extremely expensive• 10+ meters above the ground• well-mixed atmosphere

We ask a very simple question…

8

What’s the air quality here and now?

From AirBox to Smart City• Smart City does not mean

• we collect a lot of data, or

• we know everything on smartphones.

• AirBox is a smart city infrastructure; but, to be a smart city enabler, it has to go beyond an IoT system

• Can we enable something that could not be possible without 1,000+ sensor nodes?

• Can we make the city smarter?23

These are NOT just for fun

• We have informed the government about our analysis results.

• The national EPA and several city governments have subscribed the data stream of our analysis results.

• We don’t know what on-demand reactions will be implemented, but we are looking forward to that.

27

SEAIP 2016: Cloud Computing & Internet of Things December 5, 2016

Many issues remaining

• Correlation with traffic and stationary emission source

• Finer-grained PM2.5 dispersion model

• Backend calibration model

• Urban microclimates

• On-demand response & government policymaking

Take home messages

• AirBox is a participatory ecosystem for PM2.5 monitoring.

• AirBox is on its way from “IoT system” to “Smart City enabler”.

• Suggestion: Make your system a “must-have” rather than a “nice-to-have”.

• There are plenty of challenges opportunities, and we look forward to collaborating with you!
