Things Evolve > Multiple Agile Practices
Guess the Sport > 1
Everyone pick 1 sport
Write down as many rules to the sport (1 per card)Do not reveal the sport in writing or discussing with people nearby
E.g. Rule # -- you can’t hit below the belt (without penalty)Rule #2 – you can punch your opponentRule #3 – you can’t bite your opponents earRule #4 there is a ref. who can stop the game at his /her discretion
Take about 5 minutes
Guess the Sport > 2
A) Hand over your cards to someone nearby and have them guess the sport
B) Easy or hard?
Guess the Sport > 3
A) Next – mix them up!B) Everyone take a few cards (Yes – move about!)C) Check whether a new Sport emerges!D) Why did we do this?
The Evolution of Rugby > Scrummage
How Rugby came to be – Modification of Soccer. Scrum comes form “Scrummage” or when the team huddles together.
LOL or Lol? SCRUM or Scrum?
ScRuM –Capitalized in a 1995 publication. In the 2007 edition, Scrum was not capitalized within the Scrum Guide (published by
the Scrum Alliance) and remains in the most recent edition (no longer published by the ScrumAlliance).
What Really Matters…
Scrum –
Scrum PRACTITIONERS USUALLY GET SENSITIVE WHEN CAPITALIZING Scrum.
NEWCOMERS WONDER WHAT THE ACRONYM STANDS FOR (WHICH IT ISN’T)
IF CHATTING, PEOPLE WONDER IF YOU’RE REALLY HAPPY ABOUT SCRUMMY ITEMS
Methodology or Framework? Is there a difference in these terms?
An earlier depiction
What Really Matters?Scrum is not intended to be Prescriptive.i.e. No 2 teams, within or outside an organization may be implementing Scrum the same way. Other Agile practices can also blend in and do well with Scrum.
Note: Scrum has 3 Roles 4 Events and 3 Artifacts. There are rules.
Popular Example – Chess! How people play the game is different each time!
Certification Question…?
Tips! > Scrum Update 2011
2010 Scrum Guide example -- In the past, there were many “Tips” available to consider.
Tips! > Scrum Update 2011
What Really Matters? There are no “Best Practices” in Scrum. There can be “better practices”
Note: This doesn’t mean that one can alter the 3 Roles, 4 Events and 3 Artifacts of Scrum and call it Scrum. An organization may actually discover something better, but it is no longer Scrum.
Scrum Artifacts & More
Where did these go?• Release Planning (Scrum Update: 2011; Removed)• Burndowns (Scrum Update: 2011; Removed)• Velocity (No longer in 2011 Guide, minimal mention in 2010 Guide)
Scrum Artifacts & More > Release Planning
What Really Matters -- “Release Planning is a valuable thing to
do when using Scrum, but isn’t required by Scrum itself.”
One can still be doing some form of Release Planning, if the team and organization find this useful.
[Food for Thought] Some releases aren’t driven by a deadline.
Hint: The Dev Team is building a “potentially releasable increment” every Sprint.
Scrum Artifacts & More > Burndowns
What Really Matters – Scrum is more interested in work remaining – not work completed. As long as we have
a way to represent this with transparency, we should be fine. Some also use Burn-ups.
[Food for Thought] – How does this compare to other practices such as ITIL?
Scrum Artifacts & More > Velocity
What Really Matters – Velocity still remains misinterpreted and misused by people.
For Dev Teams using it, there is some insight into past data (empiricism) and a “long-term predictor” for a Product Owner.
[Food for Thought] – Some Scrum teams do not use velocity. Huh?More opinions – Ken Schwaber’s blog on “Waste Not”
Where’s Our ScrumMaster (SM) Today?
Quiz Item #1 – The SM is needed at the Daily Scrum? [True or False?]Answer: No!
Quiz Item #2 – The Product Owner is needed at the Daily Scrum [True or False?]Answer: No!
Hint: Popular Certification Question
Where’s Our ScrumMaster (SM) Today?
What Really Matters – The Daily meet is intended for the Dev Team and not a status meeting.
Notice the verbiage of the recent 2013 Scrum Guide(s):
[Food for Thought] No more references to Chickens & Pigs.
2013: Some Recent Edits / Changes

Artifact Transparency
Sprint Planning now one event- Earlier there was Part #1 (What) and Part #2 (How)- A little easier on the max timebox
Verbiage: Backlog Refinement Vs. “Grooming” - Cultural sensitivity
Reinforcing Sprint Goal- Added to 3 Questions- [Personal observation] – earlier verbiage on time zones was better.
Questions?
