India’s Astrosat Catches Astronomical Imposter

Indian scientists leading aninternational team of astronomersshowed that a new object discoveredin the sky, believed to be related tothe latest gravitational wavediscovery, was in fact an unrelatedgamma ray burst.

The LIGO scientific collaboration’sdiscovery of GW170104 led to afrenzy of activity among partnerastronomers around the world, eachtrying to find any associatedexplosions in the sky. The Hawaii-based ATLAS group found a sourcethat was in the right place in the sky,and was fading fast –causingexcitement all around. But was itreally associated with GW170104?Was it the first discovery of anoptical source related to agravitational wave detection?

No, according to a study by theAstroSat CZTI team and theinternational GROWTHcollaboration. While studyingobservations of the source – namedATLAS17aeu – the team noticedsomething odd about how fast it wasfading. “Analysing the data, Iconcluded that ATLAS17aeu mustbe related to some explosion on 5thJanuary, not the 4th”, says Prof.Varun Bhalerao of IIT Bombay, thelead author in this study. The teamhad already used CZTI to look for X-rays coming from GW170104, andnot seen any. CZTI (Cadmium ZincTelluride Imager), a gamma raytelescope on ISRO’s maiden spaceobservatory AstroSat, proved to bethe most sensitive instrument in theworld to find transient sources withsub-second durations. So if therewas another burst in the sky, theywere sure they would find it in CZTIdata.

Prof. Varun continues, “I shot off anemail to my student Sujay, askinghim to search for a burst in CZTIdata in the calculated time window. And then I noticed an email fromVidushi (another student) in myinbox: she had found the burst I waslooking for”.

The culprit seemed to be a gammaray burst GRB 170105A – thatexploded in the same part of the sky21 hours later. But to be sure of this, astronomers needed more data.

Enter GROWTH: Global Relay ofObservatories Watching TransientsHappen. This multi-national teamhad already swung into action, observing ATLAS17aeu with optical,X-ray and radio telescopes.

Team member Mr. DipankarBhattacharya (IUCAA) said, “Theteam studied the source with radio, optical and X-ray telescopes for afew days, till it faded away intooblivion. Based on its behaviour, weconcluded that this event signalledthe birth of a new black hole when amassive star imploded in a galaxyseveral billion light years away”.

This gamma ray burst was missedby several other internationalsatellites which were pointing atother parts of the sky at that instant. It was detected only by theCadmium Zinc Telluride Imager(CZTI) on AstroSat, and by theChinese-European POLARinstrument. “This is the result ofinsightful instrument design, imaginative onboard software, andcollaborative data analysis from anationwide team,” said Prof. A.R.Rao from TIFR. The team has itseyes on the prize: finding the firstelectromagnetic counterpart to agravitational wave source. And thehighly sensitive CZTI might not beenough.

Prof. Rao added, “We need wideangle detectors scattered overinterplanetary space to discoverX-rays from LIGO sources. TheCZTI team has proposed a smallsized instrument called MOTIVE toISRO as a likely payload for a futureinterplanetary mission. Together,CZTI and MOTIVE can revolutionizethe field.”

CZT-Imager is built by a consortiumof Institutes across India. The TataInstitute of Fundamental Research,Mumbai, led the effort withinstrument design and development.Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre,Thiruvananthapuram provided theelectronic design, assembly andtesting. ISRO Satellite Centre(ISAC), Bengaluru provided themechanical design, qualityconsultation and projectmanagement. The Inter UniversityCentre for Astronomy and

Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune did theCoded Mask design, instrumentcalibration, and Payload OperationCentre. Space Application Centre(SAC) at Ahmedabad provided theanalysis software. PhysicalResearch Laboratory (PRL)Ahmedabad, provided thepolarization detection algorithm andground calibration.

A vast number of industriesparticipated in the fabrication andthe University sector pitched in byparticipating in the test andevaluation of the payload. The IndianSpace Research Organisationfunded, managed and facilitated theproject. This work was supported bythe GROWTH project funded by theNational Science Foundation underGrant No 1545949. Prof. Vikram Vishal Wins INSA Young Scientist Award - 2017

Prof. Vikram Vishal, AssistantProfessor in the Department ofEarth Sciences has won theprestigious Indian NationalScience Academy (INSA) medalfor Young Scientist (2017). Theaward is considered to be thehighest recognition of promise, creativity and excellence in youngscientists, and awarded annuallyby INSA for research conducted byscientists in India. It carries abronze medal and a cash prize ofRs 25,000. Till 2015, 737 youngscientists have been recognized byINSA.

While conveying the selection ofthe award to Prof. Vishal, INSAPresident Prof. Ajay K Sood stated,“He has shown great potential tobe a leader in research. I sincerelyhope he will continue to strive hardto reach his potential and to proveleadership in the coming years”.

Prof. Vishal, while thanking INSAfor this recognition and honour, also remembered his PhDadvisers

Prof. T. N. Singh (IIT Bombay) andProf. Ranjith P. G. (MonashUniversity) and his post-doctoralmentor Prof. Jennifer Wilcox(Stanford University). Prof. Vishalis currently working on aresearch, which attempts toreduce carbon-dioxide emissionsand their environmental impact bycapturing the natural gases. Hisresearch looks at “geologicsequestration” or capturing thecarbon dioxide that is releasedwhen coal is burnt (or created asa by-product in other industries)and injecting it back into the rockdeep underground so that it is notreleased into the atmosphere.

Prof. Vishal explained hisresearch work by stating, “Naturalgases have remained trapped indeep underground rock structuresfor several million years. Thisprovides an analogy to inject andstore the greenhouse gases inrocks and prevent their releaseinto the atmosphere. RealisingIndia’s vast geological diversity,

she offers ample opportunities forthe storage of carbon dioxide.Injection of carbon dioxide will notonly help develop a longsustainable earth, but also lead toenhanced recovery of methane topartly meet our growing energydemands”.

The true beneficiary of thisprocess will be the life-system onEarth. Through the enhancedrecovery of an otherwise non-recoverable resource, India willalso benefit from energy security.Prof. Vikram Vishal is the firstgraduate from the IIT BombayMonash Research Academy, which is a joint venture betweenIIT Bombay and MonashUniversity, Australia. Researchscholars study for a dual-badgedPhD from both institutions andenrich their research and buildcollaborative relationships byspending time in Australia andIndia over the course of theirdegree.

IIT Bombay Student Develops Innovative Lightweight Water Purifier Cum Bottle

Devanshi Saksena, a student of IDC in IIT Bombay, has made a portable water purifier cum bottle to beused by the jawans in the army. The Central ReservePolice Force visited the IIT campus last year andspoke about how potable water was a problem for thejawans. Keeping in mind the needs of the jawan,Devanshi then designed a sound-proof bottle with aninbuilt purifier.

The bottle is bean-shaped and can hold up to 1.5litres of water. It has a filter attached to the base, which can be removed and let into the water body. Apump then sucks in water, which goes through thepurifier and onto the bottle. After filling, the tube canbe wound around the filter and the base can be re-attached.

The army jawans often travel several miles at astretch, and can, at the most, carry 4-5 litres of water.

In most cases, they drink water available from thenearest water body, which might be contaminated. Innaxal-affected areas, the fear of water contaminationis extremely high. So, this bottle is expected to helpthem get potable water at all times.

Mr. Saksena was lucky in getting the help of Prof. B.KChakravarthy and Prof. Hemendra Arya. “We invited afew CRPF jawans to get their feedback about themodel that Devanshi had designed initially. Some ofthe suggestions were that the bottle should belightweight, durable and sound-proof. We helped herimprovise on her earlier design and they weresatisfied with the final product,” said Prof.Chakravarthy.

The bottle weighs 600 gm and costs Rs 1,200. It ismuch cheaper and durable compared to other marketvariants. The bottles are on the way for field-testingsoon.

‘1982, a tale of the forgotten past’ attempted to tell thestory of the Great Bombay Textile Strike and its

impacts on the city culture. The aim, here, was tosensitize current population of Mumbai with theforgotten past of the city and leave them with aquestion mark, in order to envision a better future.Data visualization method was used to convey thestory is conveyed through juggling of data andnumbers.

Textile Worker’s strike in 1982 was a pivotal momentin the history of the textile industry and that ofMumbai. 240,000 mill workers from over 58 mills inthe mill district of Mumbai participated in the strikethat started on January 18, 1982 and ran for 18months.

Unsuccessful end of the strike served to change theface of the once industrial capital of the country intofinancial capital. In the past three decades, the citysaw a dramatic transition from mills to malls andresidential towers, considered as the most disruptiveurban transformations India has ever seen.

35 years after the strike, the situation seems to bealmost similar to that of the textile industry. IT sectorin India, on which the service industry thrives, isundergoing the digital transformation with automationand introduction of artificial intelligence. It wouldn’t bea surprise if history repeats itself in the white-collaredIT sector too.

A Public Domain General Purpose Circuit Simulator

A general-purpose circuitsimulation packaged calledSEQUEL has been developed atIIT Bombay. SEQUEL isparticularly suitable for teachingcourses in electronics and powerelectronics. It has a graphicaluser interface (GUI) whichallows the user to enter thecircuit in a schematic form, setcomponent values andsimulation on parameters, andview the simulation results. Italso allows exporting of circuitschematics and the simulationplots so that they can beincluded in reports and

presentations. The SEQUEL GUI has been developed for ease and flexibility, and users have found it to beconvenient and intuitive. A large number of simulation examples in the areas of electronics and powerelectronics have been incorporated in SEQUEL. The user can run these examples in the present form, editthem, or make up completely new examples if required. Several technical workshops have been conductedusing SEQUEL, and accompanying academic documents have also been developed. SEQUEL is being usedin several engineering colleges in India.

In the next phase, we plan todevelop an app based onSEQUEL which can be used byengineering college teachersdirectly in class. With the app, ateacher would be able to cover aspecific topic in class, and followit up with circuit simulation inclass. Since most of thestudents possess a smartphone, the app would beparticularly attractive in terms ofaccess. It will enable simulationin class to clarify basic conceptswithout having to move to acomputer lab for that purpose.
