    Running To Paradise: the music of Michael Jon Smith (1941‑2009)

    ‘….all that I need do is to wish…’ (W.B Yeats). Yeats’s poem beautifully sums up the mood of this classical composer and former player in the Scottish National Orchestra. The concert, performed by flautist Inge Liepelaar, violist Roos Pollee and pianist Alison Gill, features ‘Running to Paradise’ for flute and piano, and ‘Caledonian Suite’ for solo viola, pieces of tremendous energy and Celtic wistfulness. www.mjsmith.eu

    Bach to Bach: the Complete Cello Suites Performed on Viola

    Noted US violist Christine Rutledge returns to Edinburgh to perform her new transcription of Bach’s six cello suites. Rutledge has been praised by The Strad and Broadway Baby for her beautiful tone. Rutledge performs in concerts and lectures around the US and abroad.

    Whither Must I Wander

    Canadian baritone David John Pike and New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge present a moving programme centred around Robert Louis Stevenson’s Songs of Travel set by Vaughan Williams, and Butterworth’s settings of poems from Housman’s A Shropshire Lad. Pike’s recent release on Signum Classics earned him rave reviews, including five stars from BBC Music Magazine.

    Beethoven Violin Sonatas

    For the final concert in the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas series Lawrence Dunn (violin) and Gilmour Macleod (piano) play the Sonata No 3 in E major and the 10th and last Sonata in G major.

    The Roseberry Trio

    The Roseberry Trio – Kirsty Howe (horn), Alasdair Hill (oboe) and Janice Gibson (piano) – play their third Fringe, presenting masterpieces for oboe, horn and piano by Herzogenberg and York Bowen, a gentle lullaby by Damase and Schumann’s fiery Adagio and Allegro, written for horn but played this time on the oboe.

    Valour

    Come and experience this WWI Centenary‑inspired composition by the composer and poet Dom Mason. This performance is a transcription of the work for pianoforte, cello and recordings of the poetry (featuring a recording by Sir Derek Jacobi). Valour explores the effects of conflict and loss, taking the listener on an emotional journey about the meaning of family, courage and love.

    Triplicity – A Garden of Song

    In their 12th Edinburgh Fringe recital, the trio of Frances Cooper (soprano), Anne Lewis (mezzo), Colin Dundas (piano) sow the seeds of a musical garden: a floral bouquet from Schubert, Schumann and Delibes, an arboretum planted by Handel and Grainger.

    Guitars for St Cecilia’s

    De La Guitarra: Stephen Morrison and Gordon Ferries demonstrate the beauty and elegance of the 19th‑century guitar duet, featuring original instruments. Their new programme includes Sor’s L’Encouragement; Carulli’s arrangement of the first two movements of Haydn’s ‘London’ Symphony (104); Beethoven transcriptions; and a selection of virtuoso compositions by Antoine de Lhoyer.

    Technical wizardry – impressive attention to detail. By invitation, this impressive Polish and Taiwanese‑Canadian duo of Barbara Misiewicz (cello) and Grace Mo (piano) is returning to Scotland to perform Chopin’s cello sonata together with Debussy’s cello sonata. Included in their recital is one of Chopin’s earliest published pieces: the exquisite Introduction and Polonaise brillante, Op.3. Promoted by The Chopin Circle in Scotland.

    Two staves (and all the leger lines!) become one under Stefan Warzycki’s dextrous left hand, in two virtuoso piano recitals including works by Bach, Chopin (arrangement by Godowsky) and a specially commissioned sonata by Pavel Zemek Novák.

    Heavysonic Solo Piano

    Julian Layn is a classical composer and pianist. His unique style of music can best be described as contemporary classical for piano solo with a romantic‑era harmonic structure underpinned by a heavy basso‑continuo‑concept. He has released two full‑length albums of his own compositions that were sound engineered by Martin Pearson who has also engineered Keith Jarrett’s recent releases. Julian performed at last year’s Piano City Milano (a festival under the patronage of Ludovico Einaudi) and a three‑day concert series at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at St Giles’ Cathedral.

    Let Susan McNaught (soprano) and Robert Melling (piano) transport you to France with a journey through some of the most beautiful French chanson of the 19th and 20th centuries including favourites of the repertoire from Fauré, Liszt, Duparc and Poulenc.

    Harpsichords for St Cecilia’s

    John Kitchen explores a century of exciting French harpsichord repertoire, circa 1680–1780. His programme includes works by Elizabeth August Jacquet de la Guerre, Louis XIV’s protégeé born exactly 350 years ago; by Forqueray and Duphly from the reign of Louis XV; and by Jean‑François Tapray, renowned for his late 18th‑century virtuosic variations on Rameau’s celebrated dance, Les Sauvages.

    Bach and Brahms

    The accomplished London‑based cellist Anne-Isabel Meyer and Edinburgh pianist Chris Harding play three consecutive concerts of Bach’s Gamben Sonatas and Brahms’ magnificent Cello Sonatas.

    Sonic Waves

    After reaching his £2,000 crowd funding target in less than 5 days, charismatic pianist Emmanuel Vass has broadcast on ClassicFM, BBC radios 2 and 3, and was named as the Independent newspaper’s ‘One to Watch’ and BBC music magazine’s ‘Rising Star’. This 26‑year‑old pianist was also named as ‘unsigned artist of the month’ by Yamaha.

    Mendelssohn Cello Sonatas

    Tim Cais and Chris Harding present two recitals of cello and piano music focusing on the works of Felix Mendelssohn, including both Cello Sonatas and the stunning ‘Variations Concertantes’, alongside wonderful sonatas from J S Bach and Prokofiev.

    Masterpieces for Piano Four Hands

    Two Japanese‑born pianists, Yoko Johannsen and Reiko Takahashi, based in Tokyo and Berlin perform a wide variety of brilliant duets covering Grieg’s much‑loved Peer Gynt, the classic duets of Dvorak and Debussy as well as Ravel’s wild waltz La Valse.

    Lasses, Life and Love

    A recital by Karen West, Elizabeth August Woollven and George Ross, accompanied by Helen Maddox and Alan Graham, to include Schumann’s Frauen-Liebe und Leben and John Maxwell Geddes’ clever and quirky Scots songs on a similar theme.

    The Aurea Quartet with Scottish Voices

    Glasgow‑based Aurea Quartet comprises four prize‑winning graduates of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Scottish Voices is a group of women’s voices (soloists, not choristers). Together they present a programme including Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet and Graham Hair’s Ecstasy and Enlightenment, a new work funded by Creative Scotland.

    Cantica Alba

    Cantica Alba, the Edinburgh‑based a cappella ensemble, directed by Michael Harris, present Music for a Summer’s Afternoon, a programme of part‑songs from a variety of traditions, including Mendelssohn Sechs Lieder Op 59, Reger Nachtlied, Delius To Be Sung of a Summer Night on the Water, Saint‑Saens Calme des Nuites, Frank Bridge four part‑songs and Veljo Tormis Estonian Lullabies.

    Saxophone – Evolution and Revolution!

    Sue McKenzie and Ingrid Sawers, Scotland’s foremost sax and piano duo, present the historical musical journey of the saxophone. Set against the backdrop of 1920s Paris we trace the saxophone’s course from its bumpy beginnings to its inclusion in orchestral music through to its impact on jazz and post minimalism.

    These Boots

    Shelagh Westwater sings a collection of sassy and soulful numbers from three great jazz ladies: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee, with a little extra edge from Nancy Sinatra and Kirsty MacColl. The set is backed by superb musicians from the Scottish jazz scene: Fraser Urquhart on grand piano, Nick Gould on sax and Ed Kelly on bass. From Easy to Love and You’re My Thrill to Fever and These Boots Were Made for Walking, this show is not to be missed!

    Sing Sistah Sing!

    Join Andrea Baker (mezzo‑soprano) and Richard Lewis (piano) for a joyful and soulful celebration of the African American female voice, highlighting the extraordinary breadth of artistic expression by women such as Nina Simone, Marian Anderson and Ella Fitzgerald. This is a rare opportunity to hear these internationally renowned artists explore the rich musical tapestry of the many female voices that shaped jazz, opera, gospel and the blues.     Sound of Seventeen

    Welcome to the big band era and beyond! This jazz orchestra line‑up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a four‑piece rhythm section bring you swing, jazz and latin tunes through the eras. You may recognise tunes from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glenn Miller and our guest vocalists bring you numbers made famous by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Michael Bublé. We have exciting arrangements by Sammy Nestico and Don Schamber as well as the odd movie theme tune. From Moonlight Serenade to Moondance, it’s a marvellous night for everyone!

    Big Swing Face

    Following their 2014 sell‑out Fringe performance, the South London Jazz Orchestra are back with an all new set featuring the finest tunes from the golden era of Big Band. Favourites on the London swing dance and jazz circuits, today the band will perform charts popularized by the greatest band leaders of all time, including Basie, Kenton and Ellington. The gig will also feature Julz Brown performing the songs of Frank Sinatra, in his centenary year.

    The Great American Songbook

    Scotland’s Harps – A Celebration 1

    Scotland’s Harps – A Celebration 3

    Na Clarsairean (the Scottish Harp Orchestra), Lothian Gaelic Choir and invited guests present a programme which is a veritable tapestry of music from around Scotland and beyond. Enjoy haunting Gaelic songs and airs, toe‑tapping dance tunes – and a few surprises – in an informal but lively ceilidh atmosphere. Na Clarsairean will perform music specially arranged and composed by their director, Isobel Mieras, to include ancient harp tunes, well known favourites and contemporary pieces.

    Music from Two Nations

    Eddie McGuire former Chairman of the Musicians’ Union‑Scottish Region, and classical zheng performer Dong Yi, the first ever and so far the only musician of any Chinese instrument to give a public recital in the Great Hall of the People, China are celebrating the 10th year of their collaboration by giving a presentation with bamboo flutes, classical flutes and Chinese zheng (zither) on the music of the two nations in comparative perspective. Part of the sixth Glamour of Jasmine Chinese Arts Festival.

    My Journey Throughout China

    Playing an instrument of over 2,500 years of recorded history, Yi Dong, makes her 14th August annual return to Edinburgh to indulge us with a rich spa of the spirits and mind and to take us on a journey through the spirit of China. Various guest musicians will be featured in the concerts (to be announced in the venue websites and brochures). Part of the sixth Glamour of Jasmine Chinese Arts Festival.

    Bridges

    Mary McCarthy performs Stevenson, McGuire, Statkic, Mokranjac and Tajcevic. This is the launch of Mary’s new CD Bridges – a programme of piano music bridging Scotland and Serbia. This folk‑inspired music is the fruit of 20 years of performing and continuous development.

    Spoken Word

    International Voluntary Service is a non-profit peace organisation working for the sustainable development of local and global communities throughout the world through volunteering.

    We are excited that for a second year our ‘Art of Giving’ charity exhibition will be held at the Undercroft Café.

    Paintings in different styles by Scottish artists have been selected and will form part of this exhibition. The proceeds from the exhibition will help us support many causes all around the world and continue promoting peace and justice!

    A great place to meet before performances or relax after an event, the Undercroft offers a light menu of tasty, fresh homemade produce at very reasonable prices.

    During the Festival there is also an opportunity to view and purchase art work in support of International Voluntary Services.

    By Rail: Edinburgh Waverley railway station is within a 5 minute walk.

    By Bus/Tram: Edinburgh Bus Station on Elder Street is within a 5 minute walk and the city centre is well served by local buses and trams. Lothian 10, 11, 12 and 16 buses stop outside the church. *AirLink 100 terminus is outside Waverley station. The nearest tram stop is located on the opposite side of St Andrew Square.

    By Air: Edinburgh International Airport is connected to the city by tram, bus* and taxi.

    By Car: There is a loading bay directly outside the church and Pay and Display on-street parking. The nearby St James Shopping Centre has a multi-storey car park, within a 10 minute walk. Pay and Display on-street parking is available on London Road, a 15 minute walk from the church.
