MAP AND GEOGRAPHY OF QUÉBEC • Québec is a province in the country of Canada• The south side of Canada borders the U.S.A.• Québec has a population of8.081 million people• The languages spoken inQuébec are English and French• Some important geographic features in Canada are the Niagara Falls and the Hudson Bay

HOW DID QUÉBEC BECOME FRENCH SPEAKING• In the year of 1496 an Italian explorer named John Cabot found the coasts of Nova

Scotia. Canada was then claimed for France in 1534 by the French explorer Jacques Cartier.

• Jacques Cartier was originally sent to Canada to look for the “Northwestern passage”. An imaginary trade route that would create a new route towards Asia through the Americas. What Jacques actually found was the new country of Canada.

• In 1608 the French city of Québec was founded.• In 1753 Britain fought a war with France over Canada.• Britain won the war and in 1763 Britain gained total control over Canada through the

treaty of Paris.• In 1967 Canada was granted full independence from Britain and became the country

we have all come to recognize today.• Even though Canada was conquered by Britain, the colonists still primarily spoke

French and that tradition lasted though the ages. • Now Canada’s two official languages are French and English.

Gretzky

HOCKEY IN CANADA• Around 140 years ago a man by the name of J G Creighton created a

set of rules for a game that required sticks, a puck, and a net in Québec Canada.

• This game evolved over time into the classic game of ice hockey.• The first recorded game of Ice Hockey took place in 1875 in

Montreal Canada. • Early reports say the game consisted of sticks of wood and a rock as

the ball.• The game then gained traction and attention and soon picked all

over Canada, America and Britain.• In 1954 the first curved stick for hockey was invented. Reports say

that a hockey player by the name of Bobby Hull bent his stick at practice by accident. He then continued to use the stick when he realized his shots were more accurate and flew at a higher velocity.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT• Trivial pursuit was created on December 15th 1979 in Québec Canada.• The inventors Chris Haney and Scott Abbott were playing the popular

board game Scrabble when they had the great idea of making their own board game.

• They then partnered with two other men and created the game Trivial Pursuit .

• It was released to the public in 1981 and sold thousands of copies. The game was then sold to Selchow Righter, a major U.S. game manufacturer. It then sold millions of copies world wide and became the game we all know and love.

• Fun fact: When I was thinking of a option to do for my 4th project my mother read the selection and saw the board game choice. She automatically thought of trivial pursuit and how she played it every Friday night with her friends as a kid. She also told me it was created in Québec so I decided it was a perfect fit for my project!

INTERVIEW WITH WAYNE GRETZKY• Wayne Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961 in Brantford,

Ontario, Canada.• He started his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers in 1979.

He played with them until he was transferred in 1988 to the Los Angeles Kings. He then finished his career with the St. Louis Blues and the New York rangers in 1999.

• He appeared in the Stanley cup six times, but out of the six Stanley cups he only won four of them. All of the wins were with his original career with the Edmonton Oilers.

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING MY PRESENTATION!

• Overall I had tons of fun with the French culture project we did this year.

• I could easily relate to my country because I have been there several times and my mother was born, and grew up there.

• I loved the aspect of choosing our own projects because it gave me options on what I wanted to make/do. I was not restricted to worksheets or essays.

• I also loved baking the maple cookies because I learned how to make a delicious snack for future notice.

LA FIN!
