Message From Our Pastor

On December 7, we will have been in our new church and chapel for a year--our first anniversary! This is a time for reflection on what has been accomplished and for giving thanks for our new worship spaces and all that they provide in our Christian lives here in Frisco. In this edition of Connections, we will address some of the special events celebrated in the new church and chapel. Also, I’d like you to read with special attention the pages on the upcoming December event, The Po-sadas. I believe you will also enjoy the coverage of our recent and very successful Annu-al Mexican Dinner and Cultural Days Event. Finally, as the days get shorter, we enter the holy season of Advent. Please take the opportunity during this sacred season to spiritually prepare for the celebration of the birth of Christ, Our Lord. I wish you and your family a very peaceful and blessed Advent.

El 7 de diciembre, cumpliremos en la nueva iglesia y capilla un año—nuestro primer aniver-

sario! Este es un tiempo de reflexión en lo que está por cumplirse y dar gracias por nuestros

nuevos espacios de adoración y todo lo que proveen en nuestras vidas cristianas aquí en

Frisco. En esta edición de Connections, mencionaremos algunos eventos especiales celebra-

dos en la nueva iglesia y capilla. También, queremos que lean con especial atención las pági-

nas del próximo evento en diciembre, Las Posadas. Creo que ustedes también disfrutarán el

artículo de nuestro reciente y muy exitoso evento la Comida Anual Mexicana y Día Cultural.

Finalmente, mientras los días transcurren y se hacen más cortos, comenzaremos el tiempo

de Adviento. Por favor tengan la oportunidad durante este tiempo sagrado de prepararse

espiritualmente para la celebración del Nacimiento de Jesús, Nuestro Señor. Deseo para

ustedes y su familia un Adviento bendecido y lleno de paz.

On December 7, we will joyfully celebrate the

anniversary of our first year in our new church and

chapel. Since that cold icy day, when many

parishioners braved the hazardous conditions to

hear Bishop Farrell celebrate our dedication Mass,

we have lived a blessed liturgical year sharing in

the sacraments and living as Christian Disciples.

While we joyfully reflect upon the past year in our

new church with great appreciation, it is also worth

reflecting that our parish family continues its

exemplary service in ministry, service that is the

lifeblood of a Catholic parish.

In his book, How to Read a Church, a Guide to

Symbols and Images in Churches and Cathedrals,

Richard Taylor writes, “They [churches] were built

to be Houses of God and are expressions of love

and reverence. They are emblematic of heaven on

earth, and so of all that we could hope for in a

place. And while they can of course be used for

personal mediation, they are places of communal

worship, of coming together. They are also –

usually – very beautiful.”

The new church and chapel

of St. Francis of Assisi

certainly fit Mr. Taylor’s

description, both in their beauty, but also in being

places of communal worship. In the truest sense,

our continued focus on divine worship, service, and

community enables the parish to accomplish,

through our many ministries, the mission of the

parish.

Mr. Taylor writes further, “Yes, they [churches]

are often exquisitely beautiful works of art. But

their spiritual power is their essence. Without it,

they are turned into empty barns. Admiring a

church for its beauty or history alone is like

admiring a Monet for its frame.”

We are, indeed, blessed at St. Francis to have our

beautiful new worship spaces, while at the same

time we are also blessed in this Advent Season to

have a shared faith in Our Lord, His Church, and in

this special community.

In this sacred season, we are concluding one season

and awaiting the start of another; reflecting on

things past and anticipating things to come, most

notably the celebration of Our Lord’s birth.

At this special time, we sincerely thank everyone

who, with their generosity, helped build the church

and chapel. Along with all of you, we eagerly

await a new year of promise, faith, and community.

PRIMER ANIVERSARIO DE LA DEDICACIÓN DE LA IGLESIA Y CAPILLA

El 7 de diciembre, vamos a celebrar con alegría el aniver-

sario de nuestro primer año en nuestra nueva iglesia y la

capilla. Desde ese día helado, cuando muchos feligreses

con valentía desafiaron las condiciones climáticas riesgo-

sas para escuchar al obispo Farrell celebrar la Misa de

Dedicación, hemos tenido un bendecido año litúrgico,

compartiendo los sacramentos y viviendo como Discípu-

los Cristianos. Mientras con alegría reflexionamos sobre

el pasado año en nuestra nueva iglesia con profundo agra-

decimiento, también queremos reflexionar sobre cómo

nuestra familia parroquial continúa su servicio ejemplar

en el ministerio; servicio que es el alma de una parroquia

católica. En el libro, Cómo Leer Una Iglesia, una Guía de

Símbolos e Imágenes en las Iglesias y Catedrales, Ri-

chard Taylor escribe: "Ellas [las iglesias] fueron construi-

das para ser casas de Dios, y son expresiones de amor y

reverencia. Ellas son emblemáticas de los cielos en la tie-

rra, y así de todo lo que podríamos esperar en un lugar. Y

mientras ellas puedan, por supuesto, ser utilizadas para la

mediación personal, que son los lugares de culto comunal,

de unión. Son también – por lo general – muy hermo-

sas".

La nueva Iglesia y la Capilla de San Francisco de Asís

ciertamente plasma la descripción del Sr. Taylor, tanto en

su belleza, como en ser un lugar de culto comunal. En un

verdadero sentido, nuestro enfoque continuo en el culto

divino, el servicio, y la comunidad permite a la parroquia

llevar a cabo, a través de nuestros muchos ministerios, la

misión de la parroquia.

El Sr. Taylor escribe además: "Sí, ellas [las iglesias] con

frecuencia son exquisitamente bellas obras de arte. Sin

embargo, su poder espiritual es su esencia. Sin ella, se

convertirían en graneros vacíos. Admirando una iglesia

por su belleza o historia únicamente es como admirar un

Monet por su marco”.

Somos, sin duda alguna, bendecidos en San Francisco por

nuestros hermosos nuevos espacios de adoración, de igual

manera somos bendecidos en este tiempo de Adviento por

tener una fe compartida en Nuestro Señor, su Iglesia, y en

esta comunidad especial.

En esta temporada especial y sagrada, estamos concluyen-

do un tiempo y estamos en espera de comenzar otra; refle-

xionamos sobre las cosas del pasado y anticipamos lo que

vendrá, sobre todo la celebración del Nacimiento de

Nuestro Señor.

En este momento especial, agradecemos sinceramente a

todos los que, con su generosidad, ayudaron a construir la

Iglesia y Capilla. Junto con ustedes, esperamos con entu-

siasmo un nuevo año de promesa, fe, y de comunidad.

This past September, our parish celebrated the 40th Annual

Mexican Dinner and Cultural Day. Parishioners enjoyed

the food, fun and faith provided by this event and the

special celebrations in recognition of this milestone for our

church. The planning committee, led by Yoheli Perez,

hosted this wonderful family-oriented event which

recognized and honored our past along with celebrating our

diverse community. Festivities began at 11:30 am with the

multilingual Rosary prayer in 5 different languages

represented across our diverse community. Over 1,700

people attended the event and ate delicious Mexican and

American food sponsored by local restaurants. Throughout

the event, several groups

performed folklore dances from

Latin America, Peru, Ireland, and

performed regional music from the

Caribbean, Mexico’s Mariachis,

along with local contemporary gospel

bands. The Fall weather was inviting for

the kids to play outside in the jumping

houses, and those more adventurous

journeyed through the world by visiting

40 tents representing different countries

and how they live their faith and culture.

The 40 tents were purposely planned to

compliment the event’s 40th anniversary.

In recognition of the 40th anniversary, we

honored our parish founders by capturing their stories in a

video about their first St Francis of Assisi Mass and how

their creativity and determination to build their own church

inspired the first Mexican Dinner. Radio Guadalupe

teamed with our Committee to broadcast for four hours

during our event and promote even more attendance than

usual. We also extended the event after the 5:00 PM mass

and invited the St. Francis Young Adult Group to organize

an after-party of dancing that lasted until 9 PM. The

tenants of the very first Mexican Dinner were food, fun and

faith. We are proud to say this same purpose has survived

and thrived in this year’s 40th anniversary, and we can’t

thank enough our volunteers and parishioners who worked

so hard to make this another memorable event. The

Committee plans to provide an unprecedented donation

amount of $11,000! Thank you.

40a COMIDA ANUAL MEXICANA Y DÍA CULTURAL

El pasado mes de septiembre nuestra parroquia celebró la

40ª Comida Anual Mexicana y Día Cultural. Los feligreses

disfrutaron de la comida, diversión y la fe que ofreció este

evento y celebraciones especiales en reconocimiento a este

importante evento. El Comité de Planeación dirigido por

Yoheli Perez organizó este maravilloso evento familiar

que reconoce y honra nuestro pasado junto con la celebra-

ción de la diversidad cultural. Las festividades comenza-

ron a las 11:30 con un Rosario multicultural rezando en

cinco diferentes idiomas representando la diversidad cultu-

ral. Durante el día más de 1,700 personas asistieron al

evento y comieron una deliciosa comida mexicana y norte-

americana patrocinada por diferentes restaurantes locales.

Durante el evento, varios grupos se presentaron con bailes

folklóricos de América Latina, Perú, Irlanda, y grupos mu-

sicales con música caribeña, Mariachi, y grupos locales

contemporáneos y música religiosa. El clima nos permitió

que los niños disfrutaran de los juegos inflables afuera, y

para los aventureros recorrieron el mundo visitando las 40

carpas que representaban diferentes países y cómo viven

su fe y cultura. Las 40 carpas fueron planeadas para con-

memorar el 40º aniversario. En reconocimiento al 40º

aniversario, honramos a nuestros fundadores a través de un

video en el que contaran la historia de cómo la construc-

ción de nuestra iglesia los inspiró a comenzar con la pri-

mera Comida Mexicana. Radio Guadalupe estuvo presente

transmitiendo el evento por cuatro horas en vivo. También

tuvimos una continuación de la celebración después de la

Misa de 5:00 pm e invitamos a los grupos de jóvenes de

San Francisco a organizarla y bailaron hasta las 9:00 pm.

Las experiencias de la primera Comida Mexicana fue co-

mida, diversión y fe. Con orgullo decimos que este mismo

propósito ha sobrevivido en este 40º aniversario, y no te-

nemos como agradecer a nuestros voluntarios y feligreses

que trabajaron tanto e hicieron este evento memorable. El

Comité planea entregar un donativo sin precedente de

$11,000. ¡Gracias!

Each December, the parish conducts a celebration called Las Posadas, a nine-day celebration of the

Our Lady’s nine month pregnancy with Jesus. We

would like to invite all of the St. Francis family to

join in the Las Posadas events from December

15th through December 24th. Las Posadas has its

origins from Spain, and is now celebrated largely

in Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and

Panama and parts of the Southwestern United States.

Posada is Spanish for "lodging", or

"accommodation"; it is said in plural because it is

celebrated more than one day in throughout the

celebration. It is usually performed by one group of

family/friends representing Mary and Joseph and

the other group representing the Mesoneros (innkeepers). Mary and Joseph sing the Posada

song (lyrics

represent Mary’s

and Joseph’s

request for space

from the Inn

Keeper) while the

Mesonero responds to their

request of not

having availability

to receive Joseph

and Mary.

Finally, as they

are received in the stable, both

groups join by holding candles with a final song

enlightening and announcing Jesus' birth.

Another special tradition is called La Pastorela, a

theatrical representation hosted amongst family,

friends, parishes, all across

Latin America to reflect on Mary and Joseph’s journey

for the place the world would

receive the miracle of Jesus'

birth (the Nativity scene)

with a Hispanic Folklore. The Pastorela this year

will be celebrated with subtitles in order to encourage the English speaking community to join

us in this special

celebration. As we

celebrate these

holiday traditions we

will enjoy some

“Villancicos”, or

Christmas Carols in Spanish performed

by our Hispanic

Music Ministries.

We will close our

program with the

“piñata”, a

traditional piñata made with seven

cones (points) that represent the seven deadly sins,

and hitting the piñata is to represent the struggle

against temptation and evil. When the piñata

breaks, the treats inside then represent the rewards

of keeping the faith.

We invite you to join us this special celebration on

December 15 at 7:00 pm in the Parish Center.

Las Posadas son fiestas populares con origen en

España, que ahora se celebran principalmente en

México, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, y Pa-

namá durante los nueve días antes de la Navidad,

es decir, del 16 al 24 de diciembre.

Las Posadas,

quiere decir pe-

dir hospedaje,

se dicen en plu-

ral porque es

celebrado más

que un día. Nos

recuerdan el

peregrinaje de

María y José

desde su salida

de Nazaret has-

ta Belén, donde

buscan un lugar

para alojarse y

esperar el naci-

miento del niño

Jesús.

por un grupo,

pidiendo posada) mientras que otro grupo responde

como el Mesonero quien no tiene la disponibilidad

de recibir a José y María. Finalmente, mientras que

son recibidos en el establo, ambos grupos se unen

sosteniendo velas que al final anuncian el naci-

miento del niño Jesús.

Otra tradición especial es llamada la Pastorela. Es

una representación teatral organizada por la fami-

lia, amigos, parroquias en diferentes partes de

América Latina para reflexionar en la jornada de

María y José hacia el lugar donde el mundo recibi-

rá el milagro del Nacimiento de Jesús con un toque

hispano. La Pastorela este año será celebrada con

subtítulos para invitar y abrazar a toda la comuni-

dad que habla inglés para unirse a nosotros a esta

celebración espe-

cial. Al celebrar

estas tradiciones

propias de este

tiempo disfrutare-

mos de algunos

“Villancicos”, en

español e inglés,

dirigidos por los

ministerios de

música hispanos.

Concluiremos el

programa con la

tradicional piña-

ta”, las tradicio-

nales hechas con

siete picos que

representan los

pecados capitales,

y al pegar a la

piñata representa-

mos la lucha con-

tra la tentación y el mal. Cuando la piñata se rom-

pa, los dulces adentro representan la recompensa

de conservar la fe.

Los invitamos a que juntos vivamos esta celebra-

ción especial el lunes 15 de diciembre a las 7:00

pm en el Cetro Parroquial.
