ALTOGETHER NOWOpera North hits the Theatre Royal in November with a trio of comic, tragic and vivacious productions.

An opulent production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (Nov 3, 5) will enchant with its hilarious plot, the mischievous musical gem Kiss Me, Kate (Nov 6) brings with it a rich score, dazzling choreography and a battle of the sexes, and Jenůfa (Nov 4) offers up Janáček’s web of love, jealousy and sacrifice. And remember, folks, it ain’t over until that fat lady sings. Theatre Royal, from £18, theatreroyal.co.uk

Canteen and Cocktails, the new bar kitchen in what was Oak on Dean Street, opens its doors any day now.

It promises to celebrate America’s Deep South with food inspired by pit barbecues, which, for the uninitiated, is cooking meat and root veg in a pit, basically. The menu features hickory-smoked meat combos and char-grilled steaks and burgers, and cocktails include C&C’s #numberone cocktail with strawberry and mixed berry-infused vodka. Fruity! Ever wondered what the folks who book the big bands in town listen to? Try these from Paul Twynam, general manager, 02 Academy

Lamb, Gorecki (album version)A track with beautifully crafted lyrics which builds to a satisfying climax.

Mew, Comforting Sounds (album version) One of those tracks that’s simple but slowly builds with layers that you have to put on constant repeat to capture the sum of it all.

Depeche Mode, Never Let Me DownThis reminds me of a friend who passed before his time. Such a great song and a good friend.

Sigur Ros, Svefn-g-englarThis band have nailed what they do and their songs tell immense stories, even without undecipherable lyrics. Their music oozes mystery, power and emotion and so good live.

M83, Midnight City (Trentemoller Remix)As a single, Midnight City was perfect alt/pop. This version takes it to a more intriguing, thoughtful and emotional level musically. Just how a good remix should sound.o2academynewcastle.co.uk

Rapper 50 Cent is bringing bustin’ breaks, big bling, and buck wild style on the mic to Toon. Here’s more!

In case you didn’t know, 50 Cent, aka Fiddy, is famed for his odes to money, fast cars and, ahem, flexible women. He also proudly lists his former careers as boxer and drug dealer. Classy.

Mind you, his poor departed mother Sabrina was also a drug dealer and was murdered when he was eight years old. Keen to keep the family business going, Fiddy, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, took to dealing crack cocaine when he was 12. That’s ma boy...

Fiddy has fallen out with many artists, including the great Jay-Z, and a number of his former compatriots in crime. In 2000 he was shot nine times at close range and survived. No, that’s not a dimple on his left cheek - it’s a bullet wound.

He’s also fallen out with rapper Ja Rule, the inspiration for the charmingly titled track ‘W**ksta’, and in 2002 he was questioned by police following the murder of his one-time mentor, Run DMC legend Jam Master Jay.

Unsurprisingly considering the above, Fiddy always wears a bullet-proof vest and his car is bomb-proof. Yup.

Eminem LOVES 50 Cent and he is now signed to his record label, which is good, because Fiddy was declared bankrupt in July.

Mind, he filed for bankruptcy days after he was ordered to pay $5m damages to the girlfriend of rapper Rick Ross for posting a sex tape online featuring her and her former boyfriend, with Fiddy’s head superimposed on the boyfriend’s body (are you keeping up at the back?).

A day after he was declared bankrupt he posted a pic online of him with a Smart car tagged: “Times are hard out here, LMAO”. His car collection in fact includes a Lamborghini, a Ferrari and a Rolls-Royce. “I need protection,” he said on telly recently. “You get a bullseye on your back when you’re successful.”

ALISTAIR MCGOWAN

THE VOICEWe talk funny voices with impressionist, actor and comic Alistair McGowan as he heads to town with his new partner in comedy, Jasper Carrott

What did you want to do when you were younger? To be a professional footballer, of course! I wasn’t good enough, so I went to drama school, where it became apparent there were lots of very good actors, so I got interested in stand-up.

What’s best, stage or stand-up? This summer I played Jimmy Savile [in the play An Audience with Jimmy Savile] and it went so well I thought I’d never want to do stand-up again. Then I remembered the thrill of making people laugh, so here I am.

What about the voices? Sometimes the voices become part of the stand-up. I exaggerate some for comedic effect. When I do Dara O’Brien [cue indecipherable stuttering] I make it much more, ahhh, like something you can’t really, ever, ehhhh, like hear.

Who do you like impersonating? Footballers, because I like football. I’m working on Steve McClaren before the Newcastle show - assuming he’s still in the job. I’ll also be putting Alan Shearer back into the act - he’s an absolute joy. I’ve got a lot of football people in the act so I have to rotate them. I’m a bit like Claudio Ranieri - always taking people in and out of my squad.

Is there anyone you can’t do? Jeremy Clarkson, because I can’t bear listening to him. I used to find Harry Redknapp really hard, but then it clicked; it’s not just a London accent, you can hear disgust with the modern world, once you’ve got that it comes into life.

What’s the link with Jasper Carrot? We’re quite compatible and we have a similar audience. We don’t do anything together during the evening, but the tone is similar.

What do you prefer: TV or performing live? Live is best - no one can edit you and leave out the best bits, which is nice Tyne Theatre & Opera House, October 28, £25 tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk
