Thank you to Mr. Whitney and Mr. Stott for preparing students for our Winter Music Concert. Also I would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and community members who were able to attend. Your continued support in your child(ren)’s learning reinforces the importance of school. A couple of reminders for when we return . . . Our school is participating in the #ReadtoMe Challenge from February 2 nd to March 2 nd . We would love for our families to participate by posting a picture or video of you reading to or with your child and post it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or other social network with #ReadtoME and #ReadaloudME, and tag your friends to challenge them! Please send children in with the appropriate snow attire so they can fully enjoy their recess time. We ask that K-3 have all of their snow suits to play in the snow. Students in grades 4-6 have more of a choice, but need to be thoughtful in what they do outside so they are not wet all afternoon. In addition, please pack extra socks or clothes especially for younger students so we do not have to call home. I hope you all enjoy your vacation next week and have safe travels if you are traveling! I look forward to hearing what everyone did when we get back. Have a great week! Christina Labbe

RSU 40 Health Office Newsletter February 12, 2016

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!

Oral health is often taken for granted, but it is an essential part of our everyday lives. Good oral health enhances our ability to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow, and convey our feelings and emotions through facial expressions. However, oral diseases, which range from cavities to oral cancer, cause pain and disability for millions of Americans each year. Did you know that tooth decay affects more than ¼ of U.S. children ages 2-5 and half of those aged 12 -15? (cdc.gov oral health doc 2011) Good oral hygiene should start at an early age – after all, our smile is with us for life! Help your student practice smart tooth care:

• Brush and floss regularly (at least twice a day) for good oral health • Visit your dentist regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy & clean • Eat a balanced diet to help build stronger teeth • Protect your smile, wear a mouth guard during contact sports

The Knox County Health Clinic Dental Program offers free or minimum cost access to dental care for those who qualify. Priority is given to those who need dental care for the control of pain and infection, or to improve employability, and to children in need. There is a waiting list. The Dental Clinic does not provide emergency services. For more information, please contact the clinic at: Knox County Health Clinic 22 White St. Rockland, ME 04841 (207) 594-6996
