FRIENDSHIP HOUSE MSU
Online Class Schedule
Summer 2020
International Student Ministry - Lansing Area
By studying who Jesus is, we learn how that knowledge changes
everything about how we live our lives, from personal
relationships, to dealing with stress and worry, to knowing
where we came from and eventually end up. Specific areas of
everyday life are used, applying the teachings of Jesus as found
in the Bible, to better understand the help He provides so that
we can live peaceful, joyful lives.
Teacher Clyde is a retired graphic designer and has taught at
Friendship House for over 15 years. He is also a professional
water-color artist.

WHO IS JESUS?
Teacher Tim
In this course we will practice vocabulary by focusing on words
and phrases commonly used to communicate in specific
situations. I will bring some of these "situations" into our Zoom
classroom, but I will also invite you to request situations you
would like us to explore. We will spend our class time discussing
how and when certain expressions are used, differences between
expressions, and anything else that comes to mind. I will do my
best to answer any questions you throw my way!
Teacher Tim has a master’s degree in education and taught
English at Lansing Community College for over 30 years. He
has taught English at Friendship House for several years.

M O NDAY BRAIN POWER
What do our emotions say about us? What do tears mean? How
do we cope with stress? How do we communicate with our
family, our children, our spouse, our friends, our parents? How
does our thinking affect our behavior? How do we make
friends?
In this class, we will talk, in a free and open way, about topics
like stress, communication, relations and culture. We propose
to lean on science and to learn new things, but also a simple
moment of exchange, sharing experiences, discussion, and
having fun! Let us see what psychology can allow us to learn
about ourselves, but also, how it can help us to simply, living a
good life.
This class is team taught by Marashdeh (a medical doctor &
psychiatrist from Jordan), Julio (a clinical psychologist from
Colombia) and Justine (a social psychologist from France). All
are current or former Friendship House students.

A topic is chosen for each week (at the end of each class for the
following week). Students will write a paper (at least one page) at
home about their thoughts regarding that topic. This will
help improve writing skills. Students will present their paper in
online class while other students and I listen. This helps the
presenter to develop confidence speaking and improve their
pronunciation. Teacher and student listeners will take notes and
give feedback and ask questions afterwards.

The essential of reassurance, reflections about life, hope, and
beautiful messages, are in books. Once a week, we would like to get
together to discuss about a book that we have read during the week.
It would be a great time to share our different opinions,
different senses, if we like this book or not and why. Every week,
one of us will suggest a book to read, and take the lead for the next
class. We will read it during the week: all you will have to do is to
take a nice cup of tea, get comfortable, and read. During the next
book club, we will simply talk about it. It will be a chance to share
our different ideas, how each other can understand a message
delivered by a book and broaden our horizons. Let us explore the
magic of reading together!
Note: American English Teacher Maxine is a member of the club
and will assist us with English as needed. Teacher Maxine has a
bachelor’s degree from George Washington University and has
taught English as a Second Language at Friendship House for nearly

Come and join me in this new class! I know you might already have
some of the basis in the English language, so what about adding
some vocabulary, idioms, and expressions into it? This is more than
a class; it is an EIL (English as an International Language)
community and it aims to support each other in our learning path
and to increase our listening, speaking and conversational skills. Let
us practice together, learn from each other, meet people from all
over the world and make new friends! Please note: the class will use
different tech tools, such as Google classroom, Gmail, Zoom and
other apps. The use of a laptop in this class is advisable.
