Village Council UpdateNew shuttle buses are here!As this issue goes to press, our two new shuttle buses have just arrived and are having Village decals applied. The new Ford Champion 550 LF Transport buses are

low-floor kneeling buses and will replace the current vehicle. Since only one bus runs at a time, there will be a more consistent backup vehicle available if needed. The new buses are expected on the route shortly.

COVID-19 updatesOn June 19, the County entered the next phase of their reopening. This allowed for several types of businesses and activities to resume indoors with restrictions, including retail stores, restaurants, child care centers, gyms, houses of worship, and salons. A complete list of what’s covered in this phase is posted on the COVID-19 section of our website, www.friendshipheightsmd.gov. The Village Center remains closed to the public, as are all rec-reation and senior facili-ties County-wide. We are continu-ing to moni-tor County guidelines to deter-mine when it will be safe to reopen the Center. COVID-19 testing is available at MedStar Clinic, by appointment only, in the Barlow Building, 5454 Wiscon-sin Avenue. Another nearby location is the Righttime Medical Clinic at 4507 Stanford Street, near the inter-section of Wisconsin Avenue and Bradley Boulevard (across from the Trader Joe’s). The CVS at 7809 Wiscon-sin Avenue in Bethesda offers drive-thru testing. We are also checking with the County on additional options for providing testing in our area.

The next Council meeting, open to the public, will be Monday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. If the Village Center remains closed, the meeting will be conducted via Zoom.

The Center says goodbye to a beloved volunteer

Elizabeth Ross Noyes, a longtime Village resident and volunteer at the Village Center, died April 23 at her home. She was 93. Elizabeth was an enthusiastic and committed member of the Tuesday afternoon tea volun-teers and a former member of the Village Program Advisory Commit-tee, offering suggestions for activities and ways to connect with residents. Elizabeth had an outsized personal-ity, which was fitting considering she

appeared in productions on Broadway in the mid 1940s and early 1950s. After settling in the Washington area in 1964, she did television and radio work, recording voice-overs for NPR’s “All Things Considered.” We will always miss Elizabeth’s humor, wit, caring nature and beautiful smile.

Managing stress during Covid-19Going out, staying in and staying sane Covid-19 will be with us for the foreseeable future. How do we stay sane? Each of us needs to make wise deci-sions about going out from home in safe ways that protect ourselves and others from infection. Whom should we rely on to inform our decisions? How can I know if I’m being too cautious or not cautious enough? Which outings make more sense, and which don’t? And let’s face it, most of us will continue to spend a lot of time indoors. How do we stay healthy, build our resilience, and keep things in per-spective? Join us virtually on Thursday, July 15, 1 to 2 p.m., when Dr. David Sacks will discuss practical advice from psychology and public health.
