Volunteer of the Month Marie Passmore
Dear Friends
January was, in many ways, a typical month in a Senior Center. We said “Thank You” to a dedicated volunteer and participated in the Memorial Service for past Director Liz Diaz. Twenty seven members from the Center par-ticipated in the Service and several delivered touching heart felt eulogies. On the other side, one of our members became a great grandmother. Life goes on. Our Bingo friends joined Ann Jacobson and her family to celebrate her 100th Birthday.
We held a Martin Luther King Day Food Drive sponsored by “Aging Matters of Brevard”. As is typical, WPSC led the way. In the week long campaign we had to call 4 times to get the collection boxes emptied. Thank you all for your participation.
Our Friday Night Dinner was another success. Con-
gratulations to our committee and volunteers. Please join us on March 3rd for our St Patrick’s Day Dinner. We are trying to make a deal with Guinness Brewing Co. but no promises.
Bill Welser, Pres of Honor Flight of Brevard presented
WPSC a recognition award for our support of the Organization .
“In a world where you can be anything….. Be Kind”
I was born and raised in Syracuse, NY moving to FL shortly after High school, making it my home in the early 70’s. During the next 40+years I’ve raised 3 children and now have 4 grandchildren. I have worked a variety of positions including secretary/accounting, gas station management and small business owner. I now operate a cleaning service and en-joy helping my clients organize their homes making their lives more comfortable. I am looking to “partial” retirement in the near future.
As I See It This award is long overdue. Marie has been a dedicated kitchen volunteer for years. Few people know that Marie sets up the coffee urns for Bingo and ice water every morning for the exercise classes. As she works here she constantly goes ”above and beyond” the call of duty. God Bless you Marie. Barry

TaiChi/Qigong Classes
Led by Laura Parsons
Meets on Wednesdays at 8:30am and Fridays at 9:00am.
The classes are beneficial to all ages and stages but especially benefit senior citizens and those with health issues. The forms we use address a wide variety of body systems while focusing on breathing, balance and wellbe-ing. This class provides a low impact exercise experience that definitely discourages the "no pain--no gain" atti-tude. Come join us for sharing good, healthy ener-chi! Love and Peace, Laura

TARPON SPRINGS WILL RETURN
Wow! Who knew that Tarpon Springs would be so popular. Our “wait list” is long enough that we have decided to repeat this trip. As soon as we get a confirmed date and a flyer ready we will have it available at the Travel Office. In the meantime, if you are “wait listed” be assured you will be contacted and offered a seat before adding any additional travelers. Thank you all for the support and traveling with Wickham Wanderers.
WELCOME TO NEW TRAVEL VOLUNTEERS
Three new travel office volunteers have joined our happy group. We welcome Rose Carver who previously worked as a travel agent; Nancy Chaloult who formerly worked as an RN with Health First; and Bernard DelBene who also volun-teers at the front desk of Wickham Park Senior Center. Please say hello to them when you see them in the office. They are also planning to escort on trips in the near future.
LIZ DIAZ
Our travel volunteers deeply miss our friend Liz who worked with us in Travel as well as on the Front Desk. She was such an integral part of the senior Center in almost every department, but now one more star in the sky.

Exercise and physical ac!vity have many benefits. Studies show they
are good for our hearts, waistlines, and ability to carry out everyday ac!vi-
!es, but what about brain health?
Some studies suggest that exercise also may play a role in reducing risk for Alzheimer’s
disease and age-related cogni!ve decline, and research in this area is con!nuing. Animal stud-
ies found that exercise increases both the number of small blood vessels that supply blood to
the brain and the number of connec!ons between nerve cells. In addi!on, exercise raises the
level of a protein in an area of the brain important to memory and learning. Research in hu-
mans shows that exercise can s!mulate the brain’s ability to maintain old network connec-
!ons and make new ones vital to healthy cogni!on. For example, in a year-long study, older
people exercised daily, walking for 40 minutes or doing stretching
and toning exercises. At the end of the study, the walking group
showed improved connec!vity in the part of the brain engaged in
daydreaming, envisioning the future, and recalling the past, as
well as improved ability to plan and organize tasks such as cooking
a meal. We don’t know yet what prevents Alzheimer’s or age-
related cogni!ve decline, but we do know that a healthy lifestyle
that includes a healthy diet, physical ac!vity, appropriate weight,
and not smoking can maintain and improve overall health and well
-being. Making healthy choices can lower the risk of certain chron-
ic diseases, like heart disease and diabetes. Scien!sts are very in-
terested in the possibility that a healthy lifestyle also might have a
beneficial effect on Alzheimer’s. In the mean!me, people of all ag-
es can benefit from taking posi!ve steps to get and stay healthy.

Eight members of Wickham Park Senior Center attended an introduc-tion to Shuffleboard held on the courts on 1 February. They were as-sisted by Shuffleboard Club members Thom and Sheila Winkelspecht, Chuck Jordan, and Steve Clendenin. Steve Clendenin and his brother, Dave, are top shuffleboard players in the district; they recently won first place in a Florida State tourna-ment held in St. Cloud. Steve and his fellow “shufflers” shared tips that would help the newcomers understand the basics of the game. They also coached while their guests played a game, and guests were
able to see a game in progress as Wickham Park Gold Team played their weekly league game. Guests worked on the speed of the discs down the court, and then the correct speed in the right direction. Two guests had the advantage of being pool players; they quickly understood the geom-etry of the game. “They say Shuffleboard is 50% mental, 40% execution, and 10% luck,” said Steve as he explained how complex the game could be when players reach a competitive level. Meanwhile, fun time shufflers meet at 8:45 am on Saturday mornings for a 9:00 am start of three games.
All are welcome; see you on the courts!
