Friendship By Lara Goold

Materials needed: Scriptures, pen or pencil for each family member, treats to share

Purpose: Teach family members to understand how to make, choose, and be a good friend

Scriptures: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another as I have loved you.” John 13:34

Songs: “Kindness Begins With Me”, Children’s Songbook, page 145

“Jesus Once Was a Little Child‖, Children’s Songbook, page 55

―Jesus Said Love Everyone,‖ Children’s Songbook, page 61

Opening song and prayer:

Lesson:

Read 1 Samuel 18:1-4: Read these verses and briefly discuss the friendship between Jonathan and

David.

Complete the Sentence: Give each family member a sentence strip (below) and a pen and have them fill

in the blank (help younger kids with this task). ,

“A true friend is a person who___________________.”

Discuss their answers and compare them to the following definition. Of course, there really are no right

or wrong answers—just different perspectives.

Friendship Definition: Friendship is a loving relationship between 2 people that brings out the best in

both people. Friends respect each other, care about each other, remain true to each other, and overlook

and forgive each other’s faults. A true friend supports you and will never try to persuade you to do

something that is wrong.

Activities:

― What is a Righteous Friend?” Puzzle: Set up the ―Righteous Friend‖ outline. Have family members

choose pieces of the puzzle and as you place the pieces of the puzzle take time to discuss how the

different parts of the bodies can show a characteristic of a righteous friend. Take this opportunity to

discuss with your children that a friend need not be a member of the church to be a righteous friend, but

that they should support you in your beliefs and not try to encourage you to do things you feel are wrong.

Also it is important to remember that this responsibility is two-fold: Not only should we choose to

associate with righteous friends, but that we must always be striving to BE a righteous friend.

Fourteen Ways to Be a Friend (Activity and Display): Take turns placing the pieces into the correct

places and discussing specific ways that we can be a good friend. Keep this hung up during the week to

help remind us of some great ways we can be a friend. (See Friendly Challenge below for more ideas)

Enrichment/Challenge:

The Friendly Family: Make some treats and share them with another family.

Friendly Challenge: Pick an item from the “Fourteen Ways to be a Friend‖ activity and issue a family

challenge to complete that item. Give a time frame for them to complete it and then to report their

experiences. You can issue a challenge a day for a whole week or just provide specific opportunities for

them to ―practice‖ being a friend. For instance, if you know one of their classmates is sick, help them to

make a card and either have them hand-deliver it or mail it to them.

Additional Scriptures: Pick one of the following scriptures and write about it in your journal or make a

sign with it to hang in your room. Proverbs 17:17, Matthew 7:12, 1 Corinthians12:26, Doctrine and

Covenants 4:6

Closing song and prayer:

Refreshments: see below for a couple of great recipes to make together as a family.

Magic Layer Bars from http://recipeshoebox.blogspot.com

1/2 cup butter

1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

1 can (14-oz.) sweetened condensed milk

1-2 cups butterscotch chips

1 cup chocolate chips

1-1/2 cups flaked coconut

1 cup chopped walnuts (or pecans)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place butter in 9x13-inch baking dish and melt in oven. Sprinkle graham cracker

crumbs evenly over butter. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumbs, keeping at least 1/2 inch from

the edge. Evenly layer the rest of the ingredients. Press down with fork to help it all stick together a little better.

Bake 25 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool and store at room temperature. Cut into squares, triangles, or

diamonds. Serves 24 (or a bunch of hungry friends).
