Friendship and harmony have beenfurther consolidated

The geographical features of our country, which include high mountain ranges and major rivers thatflow from the north to the south, make transportation difficult and impeded interactions among the nationalpeoples. Moreover, under colonialism, they were subject to many years of systematic divide-and-rulepractices. The national peoples become suspicious of one another, prompting our leaders to make strenuousefforts during the struggle for independence so that the central Myanmar and the mountainous regions couldgain independence together.

In the post-independence period, suspicions toward one another intensified, giving rise to multi-coloured insurgencies across the country.

So, during the time when the Tatmadaw has assumed the responsibilities of the State, east-west and north-south networks of motor roads, railroads and airports have been built. With improved transportation and communication, friendship and harmony among the national peoples havebeen further consolidated and progress has been achieved in the economic, health and education sectors of the states.

Boost production of all cropsMyanmar’s sown acreage of crops stands at

more than 57 million. With over 16 million acresof monsoon paddy and over three million acres ofsummer paddy, the nation produces over 1500million baskets of paddy a year. The nation alsostands at the top list of green gram, pigeon peaand black gram exporting countries.

Myanmar is now making a great stride ineconomic growth with agriculture as the base.More than 200 dams and sluice gates have beenbuilt across the nation for supply of sufficientirrigation water.

So far, the acreage of irrigated farmlandshas reached over two million. Outputs of graincrops such as paddy, wheat and corn, edible oilcrops such as sesame, groundnut and sunflowerand industrial raw crops such as cotton, juteand sugarcane are on the increase due tofavourable conditions and supply of irrigationwater.

It has yet to make sustained efforts to boostproduction of crops, especially highly saleableones. In a bid to boost agricultural production, itis needed to collect data and statistics exactly, such as sown acreage and harvested acreage ofcrops, per acre yield, and total outputs.

Related service personnel are responsible forfulfilling requirements of the agriculturaldevelopment in the regions where their offices arebased. In particular, they have to provideadvanced methods and agricultural assistancefor boosting per acre yields of crops.

Now, assistance of advanced agriculturalmethods is rendered constantly. Farmers have towork harder than ever in all aspects, making gooduse of good agricultural foundations to helptransform the nation into an agro-basedindustrialized nation.

UK’s ancient secrets may be buried withold bones

LONDON, 8 Feb—Top Britisharchaeologists are urging thegovernment to rethink a law requiringhuman remains be reburied, warningit risks undermining years of researchinto the island’s ancient peoples andstudy of their DNA.

The row stems from thereinterpretation of a law introducedin 2008 by the Ministry of Justice. The rule states human bonesdiscovered in England and Walessince that time, regardless of theirage, must be re-interred after twoyears.

In a letter to Justice SecretaryKenneth Clarke, 40 academicscomplained experts would have toolittle time to study the remains and

that reburial would result in theneedless destruction of immenselyvaluable material.

Important sites that will be affectedinclude Stonehenge and a Viking massburial pit near Weymouth on the southcoast.

Many archaeologists believesecrets about ancient tribes and earlyhumans in Britain could be lost toscience forever if the rule is applied.Thousands of sites could be affectedin the future, they say.

“Britain risks losing its leadingrole in archaeology, a decline that willbe observed by a mystifiedinternational scientific community,”the letter said.

Pandas weren’t always vegetariansMALAGA, 8 Feb—The

giant panda, a well-known vegetarian, mayhave given up eatingmeat more recently thanpreviously believed,Spanish researchers say.

Researchers havelong thought pandas’ancestors began switc-hing from meat tobamboo 7 million yearsago and were strictlyvegetarians by 2 millionyears ago.

However, a newstudy suggests some oldhabits die hard, New-Scientist.com reportedMonday.

Researchers at theUniversity of Malaga inSpain compared theskulls of the living giantpanda with two extinctpanda species: a pygmypanda, Ailuropodamicrota, which roamedthe Earth 2 million yearsago, and the 100,000-year-old Ailuropodabaconi.

They also analyzedthe skulls of 171 livingbear species that don’teat bamboo.

From comparison ofthe skulls the researcherswere able to makedeterminations abouttheir likely dietarypreferences.

The skulls of theliving pandas andAiluropoda baconi wereso similar both likelychewed the same food:bamboo.

But the 2 million-year-old pygmy pandahadn’t completed theadaptation, its skull

suggesting it probablyhad a weaker bite thantoday’s giant panda thatwould not have beenable to break thickbamboo stems, so it mayhave supplemented itsvegetarian diet withmeat.

So while a geneticstudy has suggested thegiant panda lineage lostthe capacity to taste flesh4.2 million years ago, atleast one ancestorseemed to have had ahard time kicking thecarnivorous habit.

Binge drinking a ruralproblem, too

NUREMBERG, 8 Feb—Binge drinking is oftenconsidered an urban problem, but Germanresearchers say binge drinking in rural areas ismore of a problem than previously thought.

Dr Carolin Donath of the Psychiatric UniversityClinic Erlangen in Nuremberg examined thedrinking patterns of more than 44,000 teens ages15 and 16 in Germany.

The study, published in the journal BMC PublicHealth, found more than 93 percent of the youngpeople from the countryside and more than 86percent of those from urban areas had tried alcohol.

Of the adolescents who had drunk alcohol inthe last month, 78 percent from rural areas and 74percent from cities said they had five or moredrinks at one time.

“Whilst there is awareness of the problems ofbinge drinking in towns and cities, this studydemonstrates that both drinking and binge drinkingare as much of a problem for rural teenagers,”Donath says in a statement.—Internet

Nyunt Hlaing Win-Kungyangon (Trs)

Everyone considers that they have a greatlove of their countries. And everyone hates to beconsidered to lack patriotic spirit. Then, whatshould be set as a yardstick to judge whether aperson is patriotic or not?

In the course of the nation’s history, thereare many patriotic heroes who have sacrificedtheir lives and property in national interests, aspired by their patriotism, whereas there aremany traitors harming national interests.

For instance, while marching by water along theAyeyawady River to occupy Yadanabon royal city,British colonialists asked a national traitor Ba Thanto be sitting on the head of the warship to disguisehimself as Prince Shwe Gyobyu to avoid defensiveattacks to be launched by Myanmar patriots. In thetime of the British rule also, there were manynational people who turned traitors to the nation tocurry favour with the colonialists, and so were manynational people in the time of Fascists.

If a citizen wants to prove that he really loves hismotherland, he has to put his words of patriotisminto practice. Some are up in arms under the pretextof national unity, national reconciliation, nationalconsolidation and national integration. However, inpractice, all they are doing is just to harm national

integration. In the parliamentary democracy period, some

Shan chieftains demanded federal system, takingadvantage of the defects of Panglong Agreement, which could lead to national disintegration. Therefore, the Tatmadaw had to take over State power in 1962.Later, that attracted a demand that the nation practisereal union system. Many considered that the demandwas not much different from federal system.

Now, some groups are very loud to holdsecond Panglong Conference or 21st centuryPanglong Conference. What for? They shouldnotice that the objective conditions of the nationnow in the 21st century are different from thatwhile first Panglong Conference was on its way inthe 20th century.

First Panglong Conference was aimed athelping both highlands and mainland regainindependence together from the Britishgovernment, breaking up the British colonialists’intention of granting only mainland independence, setting aside highlands.

Now, there have emerged Pyithu Hluttaw,Amyotha Hluttaw, and Region/State Hluttawsaccording to the constitution. National races havebeen bestowed the right to submit their affairs tohluttaws for discussion.

Panglong Agreement is designed to help the wholecountry, states and mainland, achieve independencethrough consolidated unity of national races, and toaddress issues of internal affairs without alienintervention, living in harmony with Union Spirit.

In the Union of Myanmar, a multiethnic country, every national race wants to stand as a national race, and enjoy rights and development equally withother counterparts.

The 2008 constitution of the Republic of theUnion of Myanmar gives guarantee to fulfil all theseaspirations of national races.

Regarding rights of a national race, Article(3) of the constitution says “The State is wheremulti-national races collectively reside”. AndArticle (355) says “Every citizen shall have the

right to settle and reside in any place within theRepublic of the Union of Myanmar”.

In connection with equal rights of all nationalraces, Article (34) says “Every citizen is equallyentitled to freedom of conscience and the right tofreely profess and practise religion subject to publicorder, morality or health and to the other provisionsof this constitution”.

Article (370) says “Every citizen has, in accordwith the law, the right to conduct business freelyin the Union, for national economic development”.So, it grants equitable development of all nationalraces. Article 22 (c) says “The State shall assist topromote socio-economic development includingeducation,
