Newsletter February 2019

A message from our Executive Director

Friend’s founder and president Cathy Gallagher will be going

under the knife and having a knee replacement January 30.

Cathy works tirelessly for the clients and the agency, and I ask for

your thoughts and prayers that all goes well with her surgery and she has a speedy

recovery.

As part of our transition plan to become compliant with new federal and state rules

regarding community integration of our clients, we have been engaged in a lot of

volunteer activity. We have about a dozen sites at local non-profits where our

clients help with whatever needs to be done. This has been working very well for

both our clients and the agencies where they help.

We are looking for our clients to get more engaged in activities both in the

community and at the center where they can attend classes that get them involved

in artistic activities, educational ventures and physical fitness opportunities. If you

have a talent or skill such as painting, crocheting, making pottery or teaching yoga,

please consider reaching out to us.

You will see at another place in this newsletter a piece about our AKtion Club.

Congratulations to them and their advisors for their distinguished club award. This

is a big honor and they all worked very hard to achieve it. Our clients have learned

leadership skills and increased their self-esteem by being a member of this club. A

big thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Ocean Pines and Ocean City for sponsoring our

club.

Please put Finnegan’s Wake on your calendar. This is a great time and a big

fundraiser for our auxiliary. Our agency has added 16 new clients since July 1.

Friends just held a Christmas party where everyone received a personalized gift,

provides gift cards for everyone’s birthday and will again be taking everyone to a

Shorebirds game in May. With the additional clients, the cost keeps adding up. For

example, 4 years ago it cost Friends around $700.00 to send everyone to the

Shorebirds. This year, it will be close to $1200.00.

Friends needs your support at Finnegan’s Wake and at all their fundraisers to insure

they can continue to support the clients. Please consider one of the sponsorship

opportunities and Join us March 9 at Seacrets for a grand Irish party.

February Client of the Month Sedric Taylor was selected as the client of the month for February. Cedric is a valuable member of the janitorial crew. He works keeping the center clean and also works on our federal contract at the Toulson Courthouse.Sedric is very friendly and polite, and it is rare to see him without a big smile on his face. He anticipates what needs to be done, and he will do it without being asked. He is a hard worker who does not shy away from tough jobs.

February Staff member of the Month Brenda Beckett has been chosen by clients and fellow staff to bethe staff of the month for February. Brenda is our longest tenured staff person, but she seems like a new hire with her energy and enthusiasm. Brenda supervises our contract area, and she makes sure when work is available everybody gets a chance. When the clients are not working, Brenda has then engaged in different activities to help them learn new things, stay healthy and have fun. Brenda is always in good spirits, except when the Steelers lose.
