A Rich and Vibrant History In April 1893 Miami founder Julia Tuttle welcomed missionary Bishop William Crane Gray to the Biscayne area, arranging services in Miami, Coconut Grove, Lemon City and elsewhere. On Dec. 3, Mrs. Tuttle hosted services in her home during Bishop Gray’s second visit to the area. On June 12, 1896, Bishop Gray formally established Trinity Church on property donated by Mrs. Tuttle at NE Second Avenue and Second Street, to be the first church building in Miami. This “plain little wooden structure,” with cheesecloth window and altar coverings, was built in time for Christmas services. Dramatic growth in Miami in the early 1900s contributed to rapid growth in Trinity’s resident and seasonal populations. By 1912, Miami’s oldest congregation had outgrown its little wooden church and a new concrete church was built on the same land. By 1920 Miami’s growth had exploded. Trinity’s congregation numbered 500, swelling in the winter. Today’s Mediterranean-inspired Romanesque Revival building was designed by prominent Miami architect Harold Hastings Mundy in 1923 to seat 1,000 people and was completed in 1925. It is recognized as one of Miami’s most architecturally significant historic buildings and sacred spaces. In 1970 Trinity was named the Cathedral Church of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida. In 1980 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. An Historic Treasure The mission of Friends of Trinity Cathedral is to increase awareness of and support for the restoration of historic Trinity Cathedral, and to maintain and preserve the Cathedral properties and grounds for generations to come. Trinity Cathedral has survived hurricanes, the Florida land bust, the Great Depression, and much more. It endures because countless individuals, families, foundations, organizations and businesses have supported it and ensured its continued presence in this community. But time, weather and salt water have taken their toll, and this historic Cathedral is in immediate need of repair and restoration. Many stained glass windows have warped and cannot be closed. The frames of others have deteriorated so much so that water simply pours in. Several Italian mosaics have begun to separate from the wall surface, and tiles are cracked or missing on others. Interior walls and decorative molds have cracked and broken with time. The magnificent historic organ requires immediate critical restoration to maintain its exquisite and distinctive quality. Trinity Cathedral is a diverse, welcoming and vibrant center of dialogue and debate, art and culture, education, worship and sanctuary. Sacred Sights and Sounds The distinct Romanesque Revival architecture and excellence of detail distinguish Trinity Cathedral as one of the most important historic and architecturally significant buildings in Miami and one of the finest religious designs in South Florida.
The Cathedral’s beautifully crafted stained glass windows dating from 1925 capture the history of the Anglican Church in Britain, Old Testament prophesies, New Testament stories, and Benedicite canticles and hymns of praise. The Cathedral’s breathtaking Rose Window casts its brilliant changing colors across the nave aisle in kaleidoscopic splendor throughout the day. It is one of only a few memorials in the city to Miami founder Julia Tuttle.
Each dramatically crafted mosaic was carefully fashioned in Florence, Italy, by many artisans. The fourteen Stations of the Cross and the dominical apse mosaic above the sanctuary are magnificent examples of modern Florentine mosaic art.
The acoustics of the Cathedral nave provide a rich and vibrant environment for one of the most valued and treasured instruments in South Florida - Trinity Cathedral’s Aeolian-Skinner organ, installed in the Cathedral sanctuary in 1924.
