Join the Friends on the

2019 Moultonborough House Tour

We are very excited to be hosting the Friends

assembled a very nice group of three waterfront

homes, one spectacular renovation, one antique

home with a view, and a completely rehabilitated

local inn. Tickets will be $40 each, hours of the

the library and Bayswater Bookstore in Center Harbor, limited to 350

As before, there will be a raffle for gift certificates, generously donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets

will be available at the library at posted times, and at specified locations on the day of the tour.

In an incredible gesture of generosity, Marilyn Siraco, has created a magnificent

queen size quilt in gorgeous colors and patterns, and given it to the Friends to raffle.

Tickets are on sale through the Friends, one ticket is $5.00, with a book of six tickets

for $20.00. The winning ticket will be drawn at the close of the House Tour.

Help us make this the best ever House Tour!!

The 2019 Summer Literary Adventure

Join us on our 2019 Literary Adventure, which will take place on Thursday, July 18. We will meet at the Moultonborough Library at 9:30 for a short ride to Plymouth, NH.

Dr. Louise McCormack, PhD. coordinator of Teacher Education, Plymouth State University, retired, will present “The History of a Most Unusual Town and its Literary Connections”

The focus of our adventure will be to introduce Plymouth as a town and as a university which was home to literary geniuses. What influence did this location, known as the “Gateway to the White Mountains” and its people have on Robert Frost and Nathaniel Hawthorne who wrote of the area? To answer that question, Dr. McCormack will give a one hour talk/power point presentation at the Historical Society and then lead us on an easy one hour walking tour of some of the major historical sites.

We will provide everyone with a short list of downtown restaurants within walking distance as lunch will be on your own. We will car pool. The number of attendees will be limited. The cost is $5. Be sure to save the date now and be sure to sign up at the library starting on Saturday, June 22 and closing on Tuesday, July 16.

Former literary field trips have taken us to Robert Frost’s home in Sugar Hill, NH, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s home in Portland, ME, Sarah Orne Jewett’s home in S. Berwick, Maine and to the Currier Museum in Manchester. This summer’s adventure promises to be just as exciting, if not more so!!!

President’s Corner—Sherry Weene

On Behalf of the Friends of the Moultonborough Public Library, I would like to wish all of you a very happy and sunny spring. It is time to set aside all of our hibernating habits after such a snowy and icy winter, and find your way to our library for fun activities, books, DVD’s, computer help and fellowship.

We urge you to “save the date” on your calendars for our House Tour, which will be held Thursday, June 20th. Be sure to spread the word to your friends, relatives and neighbors as well. Plans are well underway and we have 5 lovely homes as well as an Inn to view this year. As this event is our major fund raiser for the Friends it needs many helping hands to continue making it the success that it always is. We are therefore, looking for more volun-teers to help on the actual day of the tour. Volunteers will receive discounted ticket for the tour. If you wish to volunteer contact Sherry at [email protected] or 253-9153.

Our formal book discussion groups will be starting up again on April 25th, as we continue with our theme on the diversity of family life. We also have our informal “Book Talks” held on the 2nd Thursday of the month 10:30 to 11:30.

We can all look forward to the popular July Book Sale, which will be held this year on July 6 and 7th. Jane Rice and her cadre of helpers do a fabulous job, but more helpers are always welcome. Many thanks to all of you who help the Library.

Sincerely,

Sherry Weene

One Book, One Child Program

On Friday, March 29, 2019 Friend’s President Sherry Weene and Children’s Librarian Sharon Gulla, had the privilege of delivering the books for the children grades Pre – k to 6th to the Moultonborough Central School.

Working with the teachers and the librarian at the school, the Friends selected the books for each grade. Our goal is to give each child their own book to establish a personal home library. Pre – K received “I’m Not Just A Scribble,” by Diane Alber; Kindergarten, “Wolf in the Snow,” by Matthew Cordell; first grade, “Baby Mon-key, Private Eye,” by Brian Selznick and David Serlin; second grade, “Alma and How She Got Her Name,” by Juana Martinez-Neal; third grade, “The Brillant Deep: Rebuilding the World’s Coral Reefs,” by Kate Messner; fourth grade, “Saving Winslow,” by Sharon Creech; fifth and sixth grades, “Restart,” by Gordon Korman. We purchased a total of 257 books! The children were delighted with their books. Love to Bake?

Not so crazy about attending meetings?

BUT, you LOVE your Library?

Have we got an idea for you!

The Holiday Open House, The Annual Soup &

Sweets Luncheon, the Children’s Holiday Parties

and The Book Discussions with Scholars are all

events that need your baking skills. We would be

most appreciative if you would contribute

whenever you can.

Many thanks in advance for helping out.

Spring 2019: The Diversity of Families

Susan R. Merrifield

Save these dates and times:

Thursday, April 25 at 10:30—Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant

Thursday May 23 at 1:00—Little Fires Everywhere

Wednesday, July 10 at 10:30—Little Women

When we speak of families, our minds often wander to an image of a woman and a man living happily with their biological children. But, we all know that family structure and temperament are much more complex and diverse. Many of us live alone or with a partner or pet, and we consider our-selves members of a family. Some of us live in same sex couples with and without children. Others are single mothers and fathers, and divorced couples who co-parent. In recent years, the number of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even great-grandparents, raising children has increased rapidly. The forms that families take are almost endless, and all of us live in several different families during our lifetimes.

We like to think of the family as a source of security, comfort and love. At best, our families nurture health, confidence, intelligence, ethical behavior, and a sense of belonging. At their worst, families are a source of abuse, addiction, impulsivity and violence. But many, probably most, families, live somewhere in between these two extremes. Millions of ordinary families work hard to survive and thrive. Their homes are a place of comfort and pain, happiness and sorrow; the little sadnesses and accomplishments of daily life are mixed in with regular routines of jobs and school and meals eaten and cooked and never ending piles of laundry

This spring and summer, we will share three books that offer new insights into the diversity of family life. During the Fall 2018 meetings, we looked deeply into the lives of members of an extended African American family in rural Mississippi, a single mother and her daughter living in rural New England, and Madeleine L’Engle’s remembrances and some probably false memories of her own marriage and family.

Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 10:30 am: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler.

Tyler takes us into the lives of three siblings whose adult lives are impacted significantly by the early deser-tion of their father and a childhood lived in a single parent household. Although Ward and Strout depict fam-ilies in which children grow up without one or both parents, it is the three Tulls who are most defined by the absence of their father, Beck. Cory, Jenny and Ezra each view their family from a different perspective. Their mother, Pearl Tull, loves her children but always with a sense that they are imperfect, that something is wrong with them. How they live with this emotional impoverishment is the story of this amazing novel, which the Pulitzer Prize winning Tyler says is her greatest work.

Our scholar, Dr. Suzanne Brown, agrees with this writer’s assessment that Dinner at the Homesick Restau-rant is her greatest work. I am so looking forward to the ideas and analysis that Dr. Brown will share with us about this beautiful and heart-breaking novel.

Literary Discussion Series (continued from previous page)

Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 1 pm (note time change) in the afternoon: Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

Celeste Ng sets this story of family and class and race in the upper middle class suburb in which she grew up, Shaker Heights, Ohio. Perhaps it is this writer’s deep knowledge of place that renders this story so engaging and compelling. The fires Ng describes are not just the arson that is part of the plot but the strong feelings and tensions that simmer and flare up between parents and children and siblings and co-workers and friends. These conflicted emotions are aroused when self-interest, human sympathy, and varied allegiances collide.

We are delighted to welcome back Rev. Gina Finocchiaro of The First Congregational Church of Wolfeboro to lead this discussion. She is the perfect person for this conversation due to her diverse ministerial work, her experiences with families, and the fact that she suggested this novel for this theme. Rev. Finocchiaro has a long history of social justice and hospice work. We look forward to her layered perspective on Ng and her award-winning novel.

Wednesday (note day of the week change), July 10 at 10:30 Little Women By Louisa May Alcott.

Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel of family life, first published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, 150 years ago. In the last few years, there have been several film adaptations of the novel, starring prominent actors and actresses, such as Meryl Streep and Emma Watson. The story of the four March sisters and their beloved mother, Marmee, is iconic. Translated into 50 languages Alcott’s “book for girls” has moved readers around the world. Decades before any country allowed women to vote (New Zealand was first in 1893), female readers were hungry for a realistic portrayal of cratitive, individualistic, autonomous girls. Few books have remained in print continuously as long as Little Women.

It is the character of Jo who moves most readers; her independence, intelligence, and heroic self-sacrifice have made her an ageless role model. Why are we so captivated by this realistic portrayal of a family of women that elevates virtuous work over the accumulation of wealth, or even personal comfort?

Although Alcott wrote Little Women primarily to support her family and was not actually interested in writing a girls’ book, the modern reader enjoys the feminist and philosophical subtext that underlies this classic novel that transitioned Alcott and her family into domestic comfort and security and international recognition. Because as a young girl I fell in love with this author and all things Concord, I am delighted to lead this discussion... Susan Merrifield

Trustees Report

It is nice to have the Town election and Town Meeting behind us. Preparing the budget and getting approval from Town Meeting are important responsibilities for the Board of Trustees. Many thanks to all the registered voters who attended Town Meeting and unanimously approved the Library Budget. It is wonderful to receive such support from the community.

Congratulations to Sally Bartlett, Jane Harrington and Jeannie Lacey who were reelected for another three year term as a Library Trustee. Congratulations also to Jack Weekes who is relatively new to our community and was elected to a one year term to fin-ish out Paul Smith’s term which was open once he resigned. As most of you know, Paul and Carole now split their time between New York and Florida. Many thanks to both of them for all their efforts on behalf of our Library.

At the March Trustee meeting, Jane Harrington was elected Chair with Sally Bartlett serving again as Vice Chair. Jeannie Lacey is once again Secretary and Susan Bucknam committed to another year as Treasurer. I am very excited about this leadership team and wish them the best of luck. I have enjoyed my time on the Board and feel honored to have served with such a great group of Trustees and wonderful staff.

At the February meeting, Ginny Gassman, chair of the Technology Committee along with our Technology Librarian AnneMarie Welch presented the updated Technology Plan. This committee works tirelessly to monitor our current technology (both hardware and software ) and also to plan for future services in an environment which is extremely fluid. Their efforts and planning help us to continue to meet the technology needs of our patrons and of our library administration.

Looking forward to seeing our summer residents return as well as other patrons that have been away for a portion of the winter. Spring and summer will be a great time to take advantage of all that our Library has to offer.

Have you considered giving a gift of books or a dona-tion to the Library Memorial Fund as a way to mark a significant occasion? What a wonderful method for a community member to honor that special someone as well as to reaffirm the excellent quality of the work done by the library staff and trustees. A donation to the Library, whether due to the sadness of a bereave-ment or to commemorate a happier occasion such as a birthday or anniversary serves a dual purpose. It acknowledges that special person or occasion and, of course, enhances the library's ability to provide addi-tional material to our patrons who will appreciate these gifts for years to come. It is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Count me in: I want to support

our amazing library!

The Friends of the Moultonborough Library is open to all who love our library. Bring your ideas and suggestions and join us. Meetings are held at the library on the first Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. except for January, February and March. Please send in your membership dues with the form on back page. Your membership dues help offset some of the library expenses for special adult and children’s programs, museum passes, and capital improvements.
