The schools I visited in the UK covered a range from the elite to the very old. What was enlightening was the experience of those schools in dealing with significant events, such as changing enrolment structures, dealing with recession and creating new programs. Most encouraging of the observations made there was unity and passion in each school’s belief that education must traverse experiences beyond the academic alone. Extensive sporting and cultural programs, a focus on worship and the spiritual, adventure and challenge activities and service opportunities beyond the school were common to all. The aim is to make this new initiative for Year 9 boys a permanent service program in the TAS calendar. The common themes of locking in a clear vision, planning carefully and communication thoroughly, shone through as lessons for any major change. The TAS Equestrian team achieved some outstanding results at the 2014 North West Equestrian Expo.
