“Memories…light the corners of my mind Misty water-colored memories of the way we were…”

It was another magical day at Northwest Classen High School for our Celebration Assembly! As I walked into the main entrance… you remember the main entrance… (for some of you J. Frank Malone was just inside the door on the right). Today, under the tutelage of Michelle Pontikos, the acting principal @ Northwest, the new purple and gold arches in the halls looked crisp and fresh, the lockers are new and have stature… THIS FEELS GOOD, I thought. Teachers and students scrambling and talking in the halls, getting last minute preparations completed before the Celebration. A sense of excitement, which is special in an environment of young people, that sense of excitement in the halls of NWC was visceral and indeed brought back “MEMORIES… of the way we were.”

Reaching the gym… the sounds and anticipation expanded. The drum line created the beat, which became a bit louder and a bit faster as the space filled with class after class taking their places in the stands. Former Mayor James H. “Jim” Norick walked onto the floor… and memories of slumber parties and friends stirred my heart and my thoughts. Jim Daniel and Jim Robinson were also there. THREE JIM’S, being honored for their contributions… all different, yet each holding the desire of all “FRIENDS” that Northwest Classen continue to be a place “united by pride and loyalty” while preparing students for the possibilities that await them.

There were students and teachers to be recognized as well… Joe Mallonee invited the teachers onto the floor to receive their grants. Students were also recognized for their outstanding achievements. The three Jim’s were introduced and appreciated. Brent Gooden introduced his friend and classmate (actually another Jim) James Clifford “Cliff” Hudson. The generous $500,000 contribution made by Leslie and Cliff Hudson to make the Northwest Classen Auditorium a first class Performance Hall was announced. In recognition of this gift the Auditorium will be named, The Hudson Performance Hall. To honor all the “FRIENDS” a solo was performed on the cello by Dakota Solis, then ballroom dancers Michelle Fuller, Sheree Herroin, Jessica Tullis, Madelyn Sylvia, Terry Arnold and Elizabeth Rojas graced the floor, dancing to vocalists Mariah Rogers & Brashe Webster singing You Raise Me Up. We then were literally brought to tears, as the Northwest Classen Fight Song was performed for the first time in several years, by a group of talented voices from student council, music and dance, directed by Ms. Frankenfield. As I left the gym, and saw my FRIENDS with tears in their eyes, I had visions of what will be created here in the next few years… because FRIENDS care… and what a glorious sight!

With appreciation and gratitude to all “FRIENDS” and our “MEMORIES… of the way we were.” Lynne

HISTORY WILL BE MADE AGAIN AT NWC!

VINCE GILL ‘75 One of the most popular singers in modern country music, Vince Gill has a love for country music, top-notch songwriting, and world-class guitar playing, all wrapped in a warm tenor and a quick and easy wit. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007, and has won 18 CMA honors, including Song of the Year four times – making him the most awarded artist in that category in CMA history.

BILL MAXWELL ‘67 Producer of 8 Grammy winning recordings for The Winans, Andrae Crouch and others, Bill Maxwell started playing drums professionally at the age of twelve. He has recorded with Cassandra Wilson, Ray Charles, Billy Preston, Quincy Jones, The Crusaders, The Nappy Roots, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross and others. He was inducted into The Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame in 2008 and is a member of The Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

MASON WILLIAMS ‘56 While Classical Gas may be Mason William’s calling card, his career has been marked with accomplishments and awards in art; comedy; poetry, books, and script writing; as well as music composition and performance that appeals to a variety of audiences. One of the many highlights of Mason's career has been his long-standing relationship with Tom & Dick Smothers as head writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
