SDear Friends of Harvard Men’s Volleyball,
As the 2016 fiscal year is now behind us, we wanted to update the Friends group on our fundraising efforts and some exciting developments for this upcoming year. For the fourth year in a row, we raised over $100k thanks in large part to the Martin Family Challenge Fund, which was established by Roger Martin ’79, and which for the past four years (and for one more year, ending 6/30/2017) matches annual donations up to $50k per year. In fact, this year we once again set an all-time fundraising record, with over $116k of donations received. Thank you alumni, past teammates, parents, and friends. We sincerely and greatly appreciate your financial support of the Harvard men’s volleyball program.
One of our goals this year was to try to set an all-time participation % record across all Harvard sports – which would have required a level of 70% participation. While we didn’t attain the 70% level, we did end the year at nearly 43% participation, which is a new record for men’s volleyball. Broken down by decade, the 1980’s (52.8%) and the 2000’s (50.9%) both were the standouts, while the 1990’s decade totaled 27% – showing a solid gain from prior years.
Initially, I was a little disappointed that we didn’t attain the 70% participation goal from our alumni. But then I reflected back on my own giving to Harvard and to the volleyball program, and quite frankly there were many years in the five to 15 years from graduation timeframe that I did not give at all to Harvard men’s volleyball, so I don’t begrudge anyone for not contributing. However, times have changed. All contributions to HMV count 100% towards your class gift totals, and that change of about nine years ago has really helped all of Harvard’s athletic programs step up their fundraising. So with that, I’d like to offer some suggestions:
What can you do to “step up your game” as a Harvard men’s volleyball alumnus?
• Make sure you give at least $50 each year (if you can manage it) to the program. The Harvard Athletics Department closely monitors how important a program is to its alumni. These last five years of great fundraising and higher participation have made a huge difference in our standing with the Harvard Athletics Department. If it matters to its alumni, then it will matter to Harvard.
• Get Involved by:• Attending the Harvard men’s volleyball alumni reunions. It is a great way to re-connect with old teammates, and
also network with older and younger alumni.• Suggesting ways to improve our communications/outreach with alumni, and/or activities that we should be
hosting. We’ve had the benefit of some great suggestions by Scott Alpert ’85 and others these past few years, but he may be running out of ideas, so please pass them along.
• Contacting your former teammates and encouraging them to get involved. We’ve got a top-20 national volleyball program that is competing to get into the NCAA tournament, and support from our alumni is extremely important – whether it is fundraising, attending games, attending a regional reception for the team (i.e. Hawaii last January – thanks again Will Reppun ’05 and Tod Tanaka ’79 for hosting the team for some fantastic events), etc. Having a perennial top-20 nationally competitive team is what we dreamed about when I was playing, and it is now a

EDreality. Get excited and take credit, knowing that it was our fortitude through the 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s that kept the program humming along and competing admirably.
This coming year will be the last year of the Martin Family Challenge Fund, and we are working on other creative fundraising ideas to replace its impact and hopefully maintain the fantastic fundraising momentum that the Martin gift ignited. Assuming we are able to raise another $50k in FY17 (prior to the Match), then that will be the fifth year in a row in which we’ve topped $100k! Maintaining $100k annual fundraising without the Martin Gift will be difficult, but not impossible.
The upcoming 2017 season should be another exciting one, with another very competitive national schedule and some very significant road trips funded in part by alumni donations. The schedule hasn’t yet been announced, but some of the more intriguing matches are expected to include;
• Loyola and Lewis, two national powerhouses from the Midwest, in January• A west-coast trip in March, including matches against UCLA, USC, and UCSB• Another very competitive league schedule, including Penn State, George Mason, and of course, Princeton
Back in the 1980’s, we only dreamed of having such a competitive schedule (and a dedicated locker room!).
It should be another exciting year, with some highly touted freshmen joining the team this fall as well. We look forward to seeing many of you at our 2017 Alumni Reunion Weekend, and at matches throughout the year.
Sincerely,
The Friends of Harvard Men’s Volleyball Advisory BoardMark Chang ’83Scott Alpert ’85Russell Riopelle ’86 - ChairShawn Bookin ’87Alec Berg ’91Wray Thorn ’93Carlos A. Gonzalez ’94Michael Bookman ’03Will Reppun ’05Seamus McKiernan ’06Erik Kuld ’10

HWith students back on campus and classes well underway, I wanted to take this opportunity to look back one more time on the past season. Without a doubt, there is a lot to remember, both on-and-off the court. Among other highlights, we returned to the playoffs for the fifth-consecutive year, sweeping both Princeton and George Mason along the way. We had three players voted All-EIVA and for the third year in a row had a player named All-American. In addition, our team was recognized for its work in the classroom. Three Harvard players were named to the EIVA All-Academic Team, and the AVCA honored us with a Team Academic Award for the fifth-consecutive year, which is the longest streak among Division I men’s volleyball programs.
But in stepping back to consider our season in a larger context, I noticed that the first and last weekends of our regular season, our start and our finish, were particularly meaningful in that they involved so many different aspects of our program.
The opportunity to open our year in Hawaii, in one of the more prestigious and long-running tournaments in our sport, was a result both of our recent success on the court and the generous support of our Friends group. We wouldn’t have been there without the hard work and dedication of both groups.
The final weekend of the regular season featured the same essential link between our alumni and our current team. In the same home weekend, we defeated Princeton and NJIT to secure a playoff spot, and we unveiled banners to honor the Ivy League Tournament Championship teams from 1983, 1985, 1993, and 2001.
The continuity of our tradition and the ongoing connection between our alumni who helped found this program and our current undergraduates are as important as anything we do. The wins and losses in a season are specific to that group of players, but the broader Harvard volleyball experience—the commitment, the pride, the dedication—are shared among all who have played here.
But this tradition is not something that can be taken for granted. It needs our attention and our support. To this end, we are fortunate to have so many people working on our behalf. Our tireless Friends Chair, Russell Riopelle ’86, has been the driving force behind all of our recent growth, and the members of our Advisory Board—11 alumni who span the history of HMV—have been invaluable in helping us reach our goals year after year. And the Harvard Athletics Department deserves recognition as well, for they have continued to help our student-athletes in so many different ways.
In the year ahead, we look forward to further strengthening our tradition and bolstering the partnerships that are at the core of our program.
Thank you, once again, to everyone for your support this year. Go Crimson!

? The Friends of Harvard Men’s Volleyball is a group of alumni, parents and other supporters dedicated toward raising money to support the men’s volleyball program and establishing an active community of current and former Harvard men’s volleyball student-athletes.
While the athletics department operating budget supports the core operations for the program—intraregional travel, salary for the head coach, and equipment costs—Friends fundraising supports a wide range of other activities for the program including salary of the assistant coach, out-of-region travel, special team apparel and new technology, and recruiting just to name a few.
Our fundraising goal for 2016-17 is approximately $62,000. These funds help to ensure that our student-athletes have every opportunity to succeed athletically, academically, and socially during their time as members of the Harvard men’s volleyball program.

Class Credit
All gifts to the Harvard Athletics Friends groups receive class credit. The Department of Harvard Athletics, the Friends groups, and Harvard Varsity Club encourage all alumni to make an additional gift to the Harvard College Fund to support the overall experience of our student-athletes, which includes the College’s commitment to financial aid.
For those of you unfamiliar with class credit, each class at Harvard is encouraged to support the Harvard College Fund to raise dollars for Harvard College and FAS priorities, as well as University initiatives. Donors are honored with public recognition by crediting their gift to the College class from which they graduated.
