SDear Friends of Harvard Hockey,

Last year proved to be an exciting time on-and-off the ice for the Harvard hockey programs. The men, buoyed by 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner Jimmy Vesey ’16, finished a successful campaign en route to the ECAC finals and NCAA tournament. Coach Stone and the women’s team fought valiantly in a quarterfinals loss to Colgate, and seniors Emerance Maschmeyer ’16 and Michelle Picard ’16 capped their stellar careers by representing Canada and the US respectively in the IIHF World Championships in March.

Beyond what you can see from the results on the ice, exciting change and transformation might best describe the energy and commitment the coaches, players, staff, and Friends of Harvard Hockey have invested into what is happening off the ice. The rink renovations have been universally received with high praise, and new enhancements continue to highlight all the great work that is happening at Bright-Landry. In September, the rink opened with new seats creating a comfortable and intimate environment, and this summer a state of the art, 34-seat stadium-style video room was built by the Zamboni entrance to create a world-class venue for players and coaches to watch game video and meet.

The William “Bill” J. Cleary ’56 Harvard Ice Hockey Endowment fund was launched in FY15 and continued into FY16. Through our fundraising efforts, over $3.2 million has been pledged to the endowment, and as of July 1, 2016 more than $1.25 million has been paid into the endowment. The endowment, once it is fully funded, will be used to support the Director of Hockey Operations position and will provide additional flexibility in annual operations support as our teams look to include more out-of-region travel among the other items that fall onto the Friends of Harvard Hockey budget line.

In addition to the larger capital improvements, the Friends group worked closely to test new initiatives with the coaches to determine what additional needs we might support to help the players have a better experience: one that will allow them to compete at the highest of levels. We added team managers to the budget, which proved to be exceptionally valuable. The Friends group supported additional funding for January meals and pre-game meals to ensure we met the players’ nutritional needs, and we increased the budget to make sure the players had sufficient post-game/practice meal replacement drinks stocked in the lockers through the year. While these budget items might seem small in the line item budgets of the Friends of Harvard Hockey, they are hugely important in ensuring that Harvard hockey players can compete at the highest of levels.

As we look ahead to the fiscal year 2016-17, enclosed you will find the FY16 report and the FY17 budget. The Friends of Harvard Hockey is focused on continuing the momentum and expanding our reach in every way. The men will travel to Arizona State in late October while the women will host Minnesota-Duluth over Thanksgiving weekend. The Friends of Harvard Hockey also plans to expand its reach and will work with the club hockey program as well. So many loyal Friends of Harvard Hockey supporters were also members of the storied junior varsity program, and as that program has evolved into a club sport, the board and many alumni have encouraged us to work more closely with the club program.

With all that is on our plate for the coming year, our annual fundraising goals become even more important to the work the programs are doing. We hope that you continue to support our programs by coming to games and cheering on the teams, and of course, through your generous giving. Thank you for all of your support; we look forward to seeing you at the rink or at an event this year.

Regards,Chuck Hughes ’92, Holly Johnson ’96, Derek Maguire ’94Co-Chairs of the Friends of Harvard Hockey

MEN

Dear Friends of Harvard Hockey,

I hope this note finds you all well and ready to gear up for another exciting hockey season.

As always, we are thrilled to welcome six new young women to campus this fall that hail from varying parts of North America. They are two goaltenders, three defensemen and two forwards. We trust that these new players will bring great energy and commitment to our program.

We continue to work to ensure that the Bright-Landry facility is a marquee place to play, watch a game, and operate as a program. Through the generosity of hockey donors, we now have a beautiful video theater. This addition will only enhance the opportunity for learning through state of the art technology for all of our athletes. When players visit, they clearly see the genuine commitment of our alumni support. Bright-Landry is a fantastic college hockey venue!

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all our alumni who help make the Harvard Hockey experience one of the best in college athletics.

Enjoy the fall and hope to see you back on campus.

Katey StoneThe Landry Family Head Coach for Harvard Women’s Ice Hockey

MEN

Friends of Harvard Hockey,

I hope this finds you well and enjoying the great weather as we settle back into another school year.

Last season certainly had some memorable moments as the team once again qualified for the NCAA tournament, appeared in the ECAC Championship Final, and was co-champs of the Ivy League. From an individual award standpoint Jimmy Vesey cleaned up as the Hobey Baker Award winner (Harvard’s fourth!), ECAC and Ivy League Player of the Year, Walter Brown Award winner, and a First Team All-American. Kyle Criscuolo was the recipient of the ECAC Student Athlete of the Year for a second-consecutive season and was a finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian Award as well.

This coming year’s team should prove to be an exciting group that hopes to build on that success. We have a strong group of forwards led by our seniors mixed with some talented underclassmen that should allow us to continue to be one of the nation’s top offensive teams. Defensively we feel we should have a good mix of young and old with the ability to help us at both ends of the ice, and a returning goalie coming off a strong year. Co-captains Alexander Kerfoot and Devin Tringale will provide great leadership both on-and-off the ice. The players have once again had a productive off-season working on their strength and conditioning and we all can’t wait to get the season started.

We could not have had the successes we have recently enjoyed without the Friends. Your support on-and-off the ice makes for a great experience had by all and is greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center this year cheering on Harvard hockey to a great season.

Go Crimson!

SAD DISCRETIONARY ENDOWMENT FUNDSThanks to contributions from the donors listed below, these AD Discretionary Endowment Funds collectively generate income to benefit Harvard Hockey each year. AD Discretionary Endowment Funds are unrestricted gifts designed to allow for long-term flexibility. Income from these funds is incremental to the department’s normal budget and provides crucial support for personnel, recruiting, out-of-region travel, technology, facility enhancements and other programmatic needs that fall outside the scope of the Friends group annual budgets. These endowment funds require a minimum contribution of $100,000. For more information on establishing an ADDF, please contact Jennifer Downing at [email protected] or 617-496-4317.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, at the men’s ice hockey game against Brown, Harvard Athletics officially announced the William “Bill” J. Cleary ’56 Harvard Ice Hockey Endowment. The evening featured a pregame reception in the Boynton Lounge, as well as an on-ice presentation for Cleary during the first intermission.

“There aren’t many times I’m at a loss for words, but on Saturday I was,” stated Cleary. “It was certainly a meaningful experience to see so many of my former players. I also really appreciated that there were managers, as well as junior varsity and freshmen players who came back. All these individuals were special and made important contributions to the hockey program at every level. The big thing for me is that this new endowment will ensure that future kids will have the chance to play for and experience the best of Harvard hockey, a group I’ve cherished and valued greatly over the years.”

The William “Bill” J. Cleary ’56 Harvard Ice Hockey Endowment was established by 40 Friends of Harvard Hockey to celebrate Coach Cleary’s six-decade association with Harvard Athletics as a student-athlete, coach and former athletic director. The endowment will support staffing, out-of-region travel, recruitment and hockey specific facility enhancements for the men’s and women’s hockey programs.
