The authors have con-tributed works specifically written for this compilation, which createsa forum for writers to voice their opinions, hopes, and concernsfor the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado.
The 50 poignant essays and poems of Comeback Wolves are dividedinto five sections:
• “Invocations to Return the Wolf” introduces concepts, suchas the ecological healing that wolves can create, and ourculture’s lingering fears and hatreds.
• “A Howling from the Belly” deals with the tensions betweenenvironmentalists and ranchers in the pursuit to reintroducethe wolf.
• “The Voltage of Legends” focuses on the reintroduction efforts,and proposes alternative ways of understanding wolves.
• “Becoming Wolf” explores various ways to see ourselves askin to wolves.
• “Landscapes With Wolves” considers the future of wolvesthrough reintroduction efforts, looking to our near futurewhere we will be able to again live in harmony with wolves.
This book is the brainchild of Gary Wockner, an environmentalwriter and ecologist in Fort Collins, Colorado. He has written for publications such as Orion, High Country News, and RockyMountain News. He currently serves as a wildlife advocate on theColorado Wolf Working Group.
Gregory McNamee is the author of several books including BlueMountains Far Away: Journeys into the American Wilderness. He alsocontributes to many publications in the United States and abroad.
SueEllen Campbell is a nature writer, literary scholar, and free-lance journalist. She is a professor of English at Colorado StateUniversity and her books include Bringing the Mountain Home.
