United Way of Central Indiana helps people learn more, earn more and lead safe and healthy lives. This mission includes support of nearly 100 agencies whose programs contribute to one or more of UWCI’s four priorities of Education, Income, Health and Basic Needs. Training, Inc. is a United Way funded agency that helps low-income, unemployed and underemployed individuals develop the job and life management skills they need to obtain long-term employment and become self-sufficient. This agency’s services align with UWCI’s Income priority. Rose worked hard every day to manage her household and care for her four young children as a young single parent. She also worked part time whenever possible doing warehouse pick-and-pack jobs -- temporary positions with very low pay and no chance for advancement. She was then living in North Carolina, struggling daily to meet the needs of her large family. Unable to find a job that could adequately support her and her children, Rose decided to move her household to Indianapolis where several family members lived. Her sister welcomed Rose and her kids into her home until she could find full-time work and afford a place of her own. Her sister also told Rose about the Training, Inc. job skills training program. She, another sister, and their mother, had all graduated from this program. Rose was excited to begin training right away. She contacted Training, Inc. in September, 2012, and started the 12-week Office and Computer Skills Training Program in early October. Within just eight weeks, Rose had already improved her skills in Microsoft Office applications, as well as her general business skills. As her technical skills and professionalism improved, her confidence and self-esteem grew. Best of all, the non-profit organization where she was assigned for her 3-week internship offered her a full-time salaried position. Rose now lives with her children in her own apartment, working at a great job with a solid career path. With the help of its United Way funding, Training, Inc. was able to provide the resources that Rose and her family needed to succeed in Indianapolis! Since 1993, United Way has invested over $1.8 million helping Training, Inc. in its mission to give individuals the skills they need to achieve self-sufficiency. The agency’s current Community Fund allocation is $65,386.
