Friday, September 4, 2015 Dear Parents and Friends, Next week is Queensland Child Protection Week, and will mark the beginning of our whole school implementation of the Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum, a series of nine lessons focusing on protective behaviours, cybersafety and identifying our safety networks. We will also be engaging students and parents in a number of workshops over the coming week to support the important safety messages of this curriculum. As part of this important week, on Tuesday we will host the combined P and F and School Board initiative – a parent workshop on cybersafety, presented by Senior Constable Nigel Dalton. This presentation will be highly valuable to all parents, with research indicating that parents who are proactive in learning about digital technology and responsible use having a significant impact on their children developing good habits to support them as they grow and interact in the digital world. The workshop will run from 6-7.30pm in the Library, with drinks and nibbles provided. Over the past few weeks we have been breaking open the three key messages in the curriculum: Recognise, React, Report. This week we will explore the final key message of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum: report. REPORT We encourage children to REPORT when they have been in a situation that is unsafe or recognised the signs of feeling unsafe. In this phase, they are taught to report what has happened to an adult. Even if a child has been able to make themselves safe, it is vital that they still report what has happened. Adults need to know about unsafe situations so that some action can be taken to help the child be safe again or ensure it doesn’t happen again. Students are encouraged to make a list of adult safety helpers. These are adults the children nominate whom they can talk to when they are feeling unsafe or have experienced an unsafe situation or feel they are at risk of something that may cause them harm. This list will include a selection of adults who live in and outside the home. Report also includes telling an adult about unsafe or inappropriate incidents which may occur when children or young people are online. This might occur when surfing the net or using social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, and can include cyberbullying, viewing or receiving inappropriate images or messages or communicating with unknown contacts. It is important that the key safety messages of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum: Recognise, React and Report are reinforced, both at school and home. I encourage you, wherever possible, to talk with your child about safety to help them stay safe now and in the future. TUCKSHOP Just a reminder that the new Tuckshop days are Thursday and Friday each week. The Tuckshop will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. ANDREW CHINN CONCERT – FRIDAY 11 at 1.20pm A school favourite of ours, Andrew Chinn, will be visiting St Joseph’s next Friday 11 September. Andrew will engage all students in music workshops throughout the day, including working with our new choir. He will then perform a concert at 1.20pm for our school community. All families and friends are welcome to join us for this great event.
