Who Do You Think You Are?

In the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke ,after Jesus enters Jerusalem on what we call Palm Sunday, he goes to the Temple and turns over the tables of the money changers. He then drives out the merchants engaged in the traditional commercial activities going on there (he does the same in John but in a different

time frame). This is a challenge to the status quo and its guardi-ans, the high priests and scribes, are inclined to return the chal-lenge. We think of authority in terms of someone being in charge. That is certainly how the high priests see themselves and so they ask Jesus “by what authority do you do these things?”. Jesus chal-lenges the question itself by asking how they understood the authority of John in his baptism of repentance. Their feigning of ignorance reveals the answer to their own question. Jesus clari-fies this with a simple story. Authority is revealed not by status or rank or even by words but by actually doing the will of God. The daily act of repentance and conversion is both the revelation and the power of God at work in human beings and the world. The great song of Christ in the letter to the Philippians which celebrates the humility of Christ’s incarnation inspires us with this gospel-given authority to live lives together in loving kindness which alone is worthy of the Christ we claim as Lord.

Peril

Matthew 21:23-32

Jesus told dangerous stories. Sto-

ries about hope founded in God

and not the market. Stories about

abnormal generosity that com-

mend sharing not accumulation.

Religious people were always un-

comfortable speaking and listen-

ing to Jesus then. Imagine that, un-

comfortable about justice and dig-

nity for all. It’s as if they were

pinned between two giant boul-

ders. One, of worldly respectabil-

ity. The other, divine intervention.

Must be a terrible thing to be

haunted by the suspicion that the

world you have contrived is made

of fragile glass and God has a ham-

mer in God’s hand. So glad we’re

not in any peril like those folks.

The Rt. Rev. Robeert Writght

Bishop of Atlanta

“To love someone fiercely, to believe

in something with your whole heart,

to celebrate a fleeting moment in

time, to fully engage in a life that

doesn’t come with guarantees –

these are risks that involve vulnera-

bility and often pain. But, I’m learn-

ing that recognizing and leaning into

the discomfort of vulnerability

teaches us how to live with joy,

gratitude and grace.”

― Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

“The Sabbath is a day for the sake of life.” -Abraham Heschel

An Appeal from the Cherokee Family Violence Center

Can you help a family move?

We need volunteers with trucks and/or trailers to assist our families with moving their valuables. CFVC has approximately 2-3 new families move in each month and most have no way to transport nor anyone to help them move their possessions so they end up abandoning their furniture. This is a painful and costly way to start new so our goal is to enlist volunteers who are willing to sign up where they have availability to as-sist families with moving their possessions.

If this sounds like something you or your group can assist us with, please contact CFVC's Moving Coordinator, Shannon Coats, via email at: [email protected] or by phone/text to 770-342-8945.

We appreciate your consideration and volunteer service to our families! Thank you!

The Little Lambs Nursery is located in the church building in the narthex. Children, newborns to 3 years old are welcome during the 9AM & 11AM services. Volunteers needed. If you are interested in helping out, contact or email Katie McDonald at [email protected] or 404-338-4662.

We are looking for 2-3 vol-unteers to add to our group of teachers. We strive to have 3 teachers assigned to every room so that being a volunteer does not require you to be in attendance every Sunday, but rather 2-3 Sunday’s a month, and work with the other volun-teers for your class to cre-ate a schedule that is flexi-ble enough for you to meet other obligations. We use a curriculum which comes with colorful handouts for the kids and a teacher’s guide with recommended activities and follows the gospel lesson we use in the service. If you would like to learn more, please con-tact Katie McDonald at [email protected].

Volunteers needed! Join us on Saturday, October 7 at 9 am to plant Fall flowers,

spread mulch, and clean up our Prayer Garden!

Bring your gloves, rakes, shovels, and weed-eaters!

This is both a clean-up and the beginning of a more com-prehensive plan to restore the prayer garden with sturdy benches and extend ground maintenance to-ward the street along the south edge of the parking lot. There are also plans in the works to beautify around our banner area right at the street and around the mail box. The north edge of the parking lot has also seen extensive weed growth due to the removal of sever-al large trees. Clearing out these edges of the parking lot which have become overgrown is also part of this larger plan.

Episcopal Relief & Development Re-sponds to Earthquakes in Mexico Episcopal Relief & Development has reached out to church partners after a 7.1 magni-tude earthquake rocked the central part of Mexi-co on Tuesday, September 19, causing major damage and destruction in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Morelos and Puebla. It struck on the 32nd anniversary of an earthquake that killed over 5,000 people in 1985. Dozens of buildings collapsed, including two schools, with over 200 deaths reported and leaving thousands trapped under the rubble. Res-cue efforts were hampered by 23 aftershocks throughout the region as rescue efforts by police, firefighters, the military and volunteers work desperately to search for survivors. Over 4.6 mil-lion people are left without power and shelters have opened in several common spaces in affect-ed areas. This is the second major earthquake to hit Mexico this month. On September 7, an 8.2 mag-nitude quake caused approximately 100 deaths and damaged and destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings in Oaxaca and Chiapas. Episcopal Relief & Development is coordi-nating with church partners to provide emergen-cy assistance. The organization has been in con-tact with Bishop Benito Juarez-Martinez of the Anglican Diocese of Southeastern Mexico since the first earthquake struck. At that time, the dio-cese requested food, water and reconstruction materials to help 300 families in Oaxaca and Chiapas. As a result of the second quake, critical needs of the impacted communities are being re-assessed and new areas of response added..

Episcopal Relief & Development Sup-ports Relief Efforts in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as Hurricane Maria Strikes As Hurricane Maria made landfall on Wednes-day, September 20 in Puerto Rico after pum-meling the already devastated Virgin Islands earlier in the day, Episcopal Relief & Develop-ment continues to partner with the Episcopal Diocese of Puerto Rico to assess urgent needs while maintaining support for the islands of Cu-lebra and Vieques. The organization is supporting relief efforts with the Episcopal Diocese of the Virgin Islands and the Convoy of Hope to deliver critical water and other necessities to two of the most devas-tated islands following Hurricane Irma. Emer-gency support was sent to church partners in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to help pur-chase supplies in advance of Hurricane Maria. Parts of the British and US Virgin Islands, al-ready decimated by the ferocity of Hurricane Irma, braced themselves as Maria hit on Wednesday with 8 to16 inches of rain and hur-ricane force winds. The full impact of the storm is still unknown. As a direct response to the impact of Hurricane Irma, Episcopal Relief & Development is part-nering with the Diocese of the Virgin Islands and the Convoy of Hope, a faith-based humani-tarian organization located in Missouri, to ship critical emergency supplies to residents of the islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda. The ap-proach of Hurricane Maria and a curfew on the islands forced the ship to move offshore. The shipment includes food, two portable kitchens, two refrigeration containers, 350,000 gallons of drinking water, 9,900 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel, tarps, plywood and nails as well as hygiene and infant care kits.
