Edlio SubscriptionFourth grade uses Edlio to inform parents about assignments. Only 50% of our parents are currently subscribed to our Edlio pages. Please click here to select classes and subscribe to each subject. This is an extremely important communication tool and reminder system.
Mass UniformFor the month of September, learners are not required to wear their vests or sweaters to Mass on Friday. However, they should still be wearing all other formal Mass uniform components. For boys this includes a white oxford shirt, tie, and khaki pants. For girls this includes a white button down blouse, plaid skort, knee-high white socks, and black flat ballet or Mary Jane shoes. Hair bows and headbands must match the uniform. Non-uniform colors (including yellow) are not allowed. If you have any further questions regarding uniforms, please use the link below to access the parent handbook.https://1.cdn.edl.io/VO2vbFasdBe2BLD2kOSMrH6CVQFImeYYfi7A17tuQUaUaPIe.pdf
Moby Max We are excited to implement a new web-based curriculum called MobyMax
in STEM. MobyMax is tailored to your child's individual needs, and I know you
will be very impressed by how fast your child will excel while using Moby.
Moby's features include: placement tests that accurately identify where your
child excels, and where his or her "missing skills" are, targeted instruction to
"fill in" those missing skills, and systematic review sessions. Best of all, your
child can access Moby from your home computer at any time.
Saint Presentation Sign UpThe children are enjoying learning about their saint, and are getting excited about presenting about their saint’s life, and have asked when they are presenting. I will post the schedule of parent sign-ups this week, but I notice a number of parents in each class have not yet signed up for their child's Saint presentation. Please let Miss Sandland know if you did not receive an emailed Sign Up Genius invitation. Thank you for signing up to attend!

Religion
This coming week, learners will
discover that God established a
Covenant (a faithful marriage-like
relationship) with His people out
of love. Adam and Eve broke that
Covenant when they committed
Original Sin, which caused dire
consequences for all humanity.
Yet God always remains faithful
and promises salvation, and
renews his Covenant, first with
Noah, then with Abraham-the
second and third of seven
covenants God establishes with
His people. The purpose of this
whole chapter's lesson? To show
the children that God is faithful,
even when His people are not
faithful. How loving and merciful is
God!. Chapter 2 Test is this Friday.
Social Studies
This week, learners broaden their
knowledge of the four natural
regions of California by studying
each region's climate and
vegetation.
Additionally, I will hand out a
study guide of Lessons 1-3, all of
which we will have finished by this
Friday. Learners can begin
studying with this study guide
now for the Social Studies Ch. 1
Test in early October if they'd like
to get a head start. I also
recommend the learners re-read
Lessons 1-3. They will be asked to
keep their study guide in their
homework folder.
Reading
Last week, after exploring the
classroom library and making lists of
both books they’ve loved & books
they can’t wait to read, learners
excitedly chose their books. Learners
typically choose Just Right Reading
Books based on interest, but we are
also checking for fluency,
comprehension, and the ability to
apply the reading skills that I am
teaching. For example, as texts
become higher in level, learners must
be able to not only read the text
fluently and answer comprehension
questions, but also be able to dig
deeper in making inferences and
analyzing plot and theme. Matching
learners with their just right reading
books may take some time, but it is a
skill that will pay off. For learners will
become better readers not by
reading more challenging texts, but
by reading at their appropriate level.
For the first time, I am allowing
learners to take their books home
with them at night. I am asking for
your assistance in helping your
learner to remember to bring their
books to school each day in order to
be prepared for class.
Writing
Learners were introduced to their 20
Spelling/Vocabulary words for the
month of September. Word Study will
be done in class and they will be
assessed on September 29. We also
began our grammar routine, studying
sentences from mentor texts. We
identified parts of speech, noticed the
author’s craft, and practiced writing
our own sentences imitating the
author.
Math
Last week, learners practiced
the different forms of numbers.
Also, learners began and
completed lesson 2, comparing
numbers, from our chapter.
Although this is a skill that
learners have attained in
previous years, in fourth grade
we take it further and deeper
using greater values. Learners
were comparing numbers to
the hundred thousands place
and millions place.
This week, learners will be
adding and subtracting multi
digit numbers using regrouping.
While practicing this skill to the
hundred thousands place,
learners will be utilizing bar
modeling. Adding and
subtracting multi digit numbers
with regrouping is a vital lesson
that prepares learners for multi
digit multiplication and long
division. We will be using our
simple solutions help books,
textbooks, workbooks and
various activities to practice our
new skills of the week .
Fact Fluency: Please make sure
your learner is practicing their
math facts for at least 10
minutes each day. Starting this
week, learners will have access
to MobyMax for fact fluency
practice both in the classroom
and at home.
MobyMax: learners will take a
diagnostic assessment this
week on Moby. Once this is
complete, learners will have
their login and password
information permanently in
their planners.
