NPPD SCAM WARNING Officials from Nebraska Public Power District are warning custom-ers, particularly in the McCook area, that an individual is contact-ing customers about tree trimming that NPPD is requiring the work to be done and asking for cash payment. NPPD said that when they do necessary tree trimming near power lines there is no charge to the landowner for the work. The utility recommends that if approached they should contact local law enforcement in McCook or law enforcement where they live, and NPPD at 1-888-ASK-NPPD (1-888-275-6773).
MORE FORMER SMOKERS Did you know the number of former smokers in the United States has been higher than the number of current smokers since 2002? Are you ready to join the group of former smokers? Quitting can be intimidating, but free resources like the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline—make it much easier. The week of November 18-22, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD), the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline and other partners across the state are teaming up for Cessation Week. This week focuses on encour-aging Nebraskans to quit tobacco and promoting available re-sources to help quit tobacco for good. “Even if you have tried to quit in the past, but slipped up, you learned something from that experience, and that knowledge can be put toward another try,” said Joy Trail, SWNPHD’s Tobacco Program Manager. The Ne-braska Tobacco Quitline is offering a free two-week supply of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to all qualified callers. Cessa-tion counseling and medication are both effective for treating nicotine dependence, but combining the two has been shown to increase the success rate. "By calling the Quitline, tobacco users have a whole team of support on their side," explains Joy Trail of SWNPHD. “You can get the tools you need to be successful by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW, talking with your healthcare provider, and building your support network.”
“GROW WITH GOOGLE” Google launched the Google.org Impact Challenge Nebraska, at the ‘Grow with Google’ digital skills training event, hosted by Omaha Public Library. The Google.org Impact Challenge Ne-braska invites nonprofits throughout the state to submit proposals for bold ideas to grow economic opportunities in their local com-munities. Grow with Google is the tech company’s initiative to cre-ate economic opportunities for Americans. “On the heels of ‘Grow with Google’ Nebraska, we are excited to continue partnering with local communities to help grow economic opportunities with the Nebraska Google.org Impact Challenge,” said Dan Harbeke, Google’s Regional Head of Public Policy and External Affairs. “The state is home to a vibrant nonprofit community with exciting visions for the future. Our hope is to help bring some of these vi-sions to life.”
