Take a look inside the Gorn Chapel at about 5:45 PM on a typical Friday night.

Up in the front rows, a family is beaming—no, bursting—with pride while a 13-year-old battles butterflies before saying the kiddush in honor of the next day’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

A few rows back, some are in a more reflective mood as they prepare to stand and observe the Yahrzeit of a loved one. And still others may be attending services that evening because they are facing the fresh wounds of a more recent loss.

In other parts of the chapel, grandparents greet grandchildren, friends kiss hello, toddlers toddle, babies giggle and babies cry. Many—in fact, most—are there for no specific reason or date on the calendar; they are there simply to observe Shabbat in shul.

Rabbis Schwartz and Saroken and Cantor King emerge with hugs, smiles and handshakes, preparing to lead the evening’s service.

What you also notice, perhaps subconsciously: the room is full. Packed, even. Get there early, or you risk not even finding a seat. And the Gorn seats roughly 250. This comes at a time when Jewish congregations nationwide are clamoring for members and for participation in religious activities.

The people gathered have come as they were, so to speak, the dress is casual. The service will last 45 minutes to an hour. It is filled with music to greet the Shabbat, traditional observances and prayers, and wisdom from the rabbis.

Rabbi Schwartz recently relayed the story of Passover through a comical story of his Passover: a hunt for shmurah matzo from Brooklyn to Baltimore.

On another Shabbat, Rabbi Saroken told the story of a woman who daily carried daily two containers to pick up and deliver water. One of the vessels was pristine,

Lightsperfect. The other vessel was cracked, leaky and nearly empty by the time she arrived at her destination each day. But on reflection, the path the woman had traveled was filled with lush vegetation and flowers on the side where the cracked container had leaked water. The side where the “perfect” vessel had been carried was barren. It was a beautiful lesson in the expectations and limitations of what we perceive to be perfect.

Cantor King will wrap things up by singing L’Cha Dodi to the tune of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, or Shalom Aleichem to Gershwin’s Summertime. Or, he might keep everyone guessing with a different 'mash-up.'

“I attend almost every week, and have been for probably more than 10 years,” says Steve Kravet. “I enjoy the parshas, the music, the reflective amidah. The services are at a convenient time, they are uplifting, and there is a group of 'regulars' that make it wonderfully social.”

The history of Beth El’s Friday night services may date back to the congregation's decision in the 1980's to allow Bat Mitzvahs to take place on Saturday mornings. Bat Mitzvahs had been the staple of Friday nights prior to that, and subsequently, the services languished.

The next milestone was the construction of the Gorn chapel which would allow the services to be relocated from the Kreitzer Room. And another catalyst was Cantor King’s dedicated effort to infuse the services with more music and participation. From there, attendance grew.

“What we have done with Shabbat evening is to offer a low-pressure service, not overly long, where our members (and friends) can come together as a happy and casual community, participate in singing familiar melodies mixed with new music, hear a brief but inspiring message from the Rabbis, and leave Beth El feeling both spiritually uplifted and socially engaged,” said Cantor King.

“The most important word here is community—people come to the Gorn Chapel on Friday evening not just to worship, but because they feel powerful sense of belonging, togetherness, and yes: enjoyment on Friday evening.”

5The Voice of Beth El Congregation

WELCOMING INTERFAITH FAMILIESBy Rabbi Steven SchwartzJust a couple of weeks ago we posted a link to our Facebook page of a blog post that has now been clicked on and read more than 3000 times. The post explains a change to the synagogue by-laws that the congregation voted into effect Wednesday evening May 16th at our annual meeting. The by-law change has to do with the status of non-Jews at Beth El and membership. Up to this point, someone who was not Jewish could not technically be a member of the congregation. For years and years there have been many non-Jews in our community, playing meaningful roles in the life of the synagogue, making sure that their children are at Hebrew school every week, sometimes even attending services regularly, involved with committees. But until now, technically they were not members.

But the recommended change in the by-laws will formally grant membership status to non-Jews for the very first time in Beth El’s 70 years history. There will still be some caveats in place, and for the time being, people who are not Jewish would not be asked to chair committees or to serve on the board. But at next year’s annual meeting, folks who are not Jewish and who are members will have a vote and will be fully counted in the required quorum for the meeting.

On the one hand the change is symbolic more than anything else. For many years – going back at least two decades – Beth El has been one of the most progressive synagogues in the Conservative Movement in terms of opening our doors to non-Jews and interfaith families. People who are not Jewish have been welcomed to our bimah, to stand with their children at the ark during a bar or bat mitzvah and read a prayer, or to stand with their Jewish spouse at the Torah during a baby naming. Some ten years ago or so we expanded the roles a non-Jew could play during services, creating opportunities for someone who is not Jewish to stand before the congregation and lead us in prayer during responsive readings, both Friday nights and Shabbat mornings. We have an interfaith havurah here, a group that meets multiple times a year to talk about interfaith issues and to explore together the interfaith journey. The Beth El clergy, from Rabbi Agus to Rabbi Loeb to the present day, have always made interfaith dialogue an important part of their communal work.

But this is something that is different. It is a formal embrace of those who are not Jewish, and by extension it is a formal embrace of the interfaith community. You probably know that the intermarriage rate in the non-Orthodox Jewish community these days is hovering around 60%. When I spoke about this issue a couple of months ago I said that it is time for the community to stop thinking about this issue as one that we need to solve. It is not solvable. The Jewish community has top notch leadership, bright minds, and deep pockets, but despite worrying about intermarriage and working on the issue for decades at this point, we have only watched the rate grow higher and higher. Are there things that increase the chances of a child marrying Jewishly?

Yes! Home observance is one, and Jewish camping is another, day school can help too – but by and large this is not something that we are going to have a lot of control over and in all likelihood, in the years ahead the intermarriage rate will continue to rise.

If so, I would argue that we should worry less about the number, the percentage of Jews intermarrying, and we should worry more about how we connect with these Jews and their families so that they feel welcome in the Jewish community in general and in synagogue life in particular. Because if the intermarriage rate is at 60% and we don’t figure out a way to welcome those families then we are saying to 6 out of every 10 Jews we can’t help you. And it is hard for me to understand how that is good for us, or how that is good for them. After all, if we are saying we want the children and grandchildren of intermarried families to be Jewish, doesn’t it make sense to open the door as wide as possible so that those families might be able to find a Jewish home. Without a Jewish home, we will certainly lose them.

So the by-law change is one of the ways – just one – that we are trying to say to interfaith families you can find a comfortable, meaningful, and welcoming spiritual home at Beth El for your family.

By and large as news of this change has spread the reaction has been very positive. Last I looked there were close to 130 likes on the Facebook post, and a number of positive comments. But I also understand that there will always be those who are uncomfortable with change.

Our system of worship does not involve the sacrifice of animals any more. The idea that we might tell someone they can’t serve the congregation because they have a physical disability is abhorrent to us. And forget about the idea of taking someone who has cursed using God’s name and stoning them to death. Were that law still practiced in modern times Rabbi Loeb wouldn’t have made it past 10 o’clock in the morning most days.

And I would only add this. All of the changes that have been made in the tradition in the course of our 3500 year old history, have made Judaism stronger, wiser, more tolerant and more humane. And these changes have also enabled the Jewish people to survive, century after century after century.

May the change that we are embracing as a congregation do the same, for Beth El, for our community, for our families, so that we can continue to move from strength to strength.

SISTERHOOD PRESIDENTS' REPORTAs we reflect on 2017-2018, Sisterhood has had a very busy, successful and productive year with many events and projects.

Ilene Merenbloom and Dale Kahn, Co- Presidents, attended the Women's League for Conservative Judaism’s convention in Alexandria, VA where they had an opportunity to meet and share ideas with sisterhood presidents from North America. The highlight of the convention was receiving the Jewels in the Crown Award which is given to those sisterhoods who offer programs that nurture and sustain Jewish life and vitality in their local communities.

Sisterhood’s opening meeting/brunch for our paid-up members featured Natalie Smith Pilcher, who portrayed Henrietta Szold. This event was followed by the "Fall Fashion Fest," an amazing shopping experience. Other presenters throughout the year included a pianist; a professor who spoke about Justice Louis Brandeis a panel discussion on Islamophobia featuring Rabbi Dana Saroken, Dr. Rosann Catalano and Dr. Homayra Ziad from the Institute for Muslim, Christian and Jewish Studies; a program in conjunction with The Soul Center; Max Weiss, a pop culture critic; and the brass music of The Titan Trio.

Biblio, our monthly book club, featured books reviewed by members of Sisterhood. Additionally, Rabbis Steven Schwartz and Dana Saroken presented book reviews following a petite luncheon. Two evening events planned by our membership committee included a librarian from the Pikesville library who reviewed new and old "reads" and a "hands on" event sampling programs offered at The Soul Center. Other Sisterhood events and activities include:

• The sold-out trips planned by our very innovative travel committee visited seven different destinations including New Jersey, Washington and Virginia.

• Sisterhood’s Afternoon of Games was, once again, a sold-out event where participants enjoyed lunch and an afternoon of fun and comradery.

• An annual event, Sisterhood Shabbat services were conducted entirely by our members. Following services, Sisterhood hosted a beautiful kiddush luncheon for congregants.

• Our "Knitzvah" committee lovingly knitted and delivered 20 lap afghans to members who are ill or home bound.

• Beth El Sisterhood was well represented at the annual Joint Sisterhood Dinner. Our members joined ladies from six other synagogues to honor the work done by all.

• The fund-raising campaign for the Jewish Theological Seminary welcomed 48 Sisterhood members as benefactors. These contributions contribute to the seminary where conservative rabbis, cantors and educators are trained.

• Thanks to the fundraising of our "No-Donor Donor," we are able to contribute more funds to Beth El Synagogue and Beth El schools.

• We are very grateful to the many dedicated ladies who staff our very successful Judaica Shop featuring beautiful merchandise.

• Unique Boutique’s 14th show was a resounding success.

• Our closing luncheon and installation of officers and board members featured The Titan Trio, who entertained us with amazing brass renditions as we officially closed activities for 2017-2018.

• The Archives committee, along with the videographer, are in the final phase of the production of a video commemorating Sisterhood’s 70th Anniversary. This video will be presented at a special program on Sunday, October 7.

We extend our sincere thanks to the many devoted and dedicated members of Sisterhood who have worked tirelessly to make our organization such an enormous success, allowing us to contribute to our synagogue and schools. Best wishes to everyone for a healthy, fun-filled and safe summer. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your co-presidents this past year.

LET’S CELEBRATE ISRAEL’S 70TH BIRTHDAYWednesday, June 6 & 13 at 7:00 PM Share Israeli films as we celebrate Israel’s milestone 70th birthday. Each film will represent a different story in the history of the growing State of Israel. There will be two speakers: one with an American perspective and one with an Israeli perspective presented at each screening. Held in the Offit Auditorium.

FEE: $10 per film at the door.

JUNE 6: SALLAH SHABATI (1965) with Ben Kreshtool, Beth El Ritual Director and Sivan Chaban, BZD. This sharp, often hilarious satire that became the most successful film in Israeli history is about new immigrants Sallah and his family, who are left in a shack near their promised apartment and are abandoned for months. A Yemenite Jewish family that was flown to Israel during “Operation Magic Carpet” in 1949 is forced to move to a government settlement camp. Sallah, the patriarch of the family , tries to make money and get better housing in a country that can barely provide for its own and is in the midst of absorbing hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab countries.

JUNE 13: DIMONA TWIST (2016) with Hana Bor, Ph.D., Baltimore Hebrew Institute, Towson University and Neil Rubin, Ph.D., Beth Tfiloh Dahan High School. Seven women arrive in Israel by ship from North Africa and Poland in the 1950's and 1960's and are sent straight to Dimona, a town recently established in the desert. They talk about the pain of leaving their homes behind, poverty, the difficulties of adjusting in their new homeland, and their determined attempts to create rich and meaningful lives. They recount the struggles they took part in and the insights they gained, with humor, sorrow and dignity.

Please contact Ellen Marks at [email protected] or 410-580-5166 to RSVP for all Adult Education classes, whether or not there is a fee.

School NewsMELANIE BLATT HIRED AS BETH EL'S CANTOR EDUCATOR & DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Beth El Congregation has announced it has hired Melanie Blatt to serve as Cantor Educator and Director of Community Engagement. She will begin her position in July of 2018.

In her new role, Cantor Blatt will collaborate with and support Beth El clergy in leading services, teaching

congregants, and officiating at life cycle events. Additionally, Cantor Blatt plans to establish a young professionals group within the Beth El community and will work with clergy to strengthen the congregation Hesed outreach initiative with a specific focus on Bikur Holim, the mitzvah to visit and extend aid to the sick.

“I am honored to join Rabbi Schwartz, Rabbi Saroken, and Cantor King, a very special clergy team,” said Cantor Blatt. “Beth El has such a solid foundation of community and there are so many niches that are ready and waiting to be developed. I am particularly excited to lead a special interest group which will bring spiritually and physically healing music to people in hospice and assisted living.”

Melanie first began working part-time at Beth El Congregation in 2013, leading High Holy Day and Shabbat Services for families. She also served as Beth El’s Youth Programming Director and Music Educator for the Hebrew School. Before her cantorial appointment at Beth El, Cantor Blatt served as Musical Director for Shirei HaNeshama in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cantor Melanie Blatt back to her hometown as she begins her full-time work at Beth El as a Cantor and educator this summer,” said Senior Rabbi Steven Schwartz. “Melanie has been

a presence in our congregation for some time now, working with our Hebrew school students, leading family High Holy Day services, and working with our Hebrew school families on fun and meaningful Shabbat programs. Melanie brings terrific musical talent, a deep love of Judaism, and a unique spark and spirit to all that she does. I am proud and grateful to welcome her to our Senior Staff.”

As Cantor Educator, Ms. Blatt will continue to plan and lead High Holy Day family services and other family and youth services on Shabbat at the main campus and satellite sites throughout the year, including Tot Shabbat, preschool Shabbat Friday mornings, and special services for religious school students.

“It has been my privilege and pleasure to watch Melanie mature through the years as both a musician and a teacher, and I’m delighted that she has decided to join the Beth El family”, said Cantor Thom King. “Anyone who has seen her engage with children and their parents during Shabbat and High Holiday Family Services knows that she brings a special joy, spirit, and love for Judaism to all that she does. I’m looking forward to having her work with me as we continue to

expand Beth El’s vision of the future, and I know that she will continue to work her magic in all of her new responsibilities.”

“It is a dream come true to work with Cantor King,” said Ms. Blatt. “I first admired Cantor King for his stunning

performance of Elijah when I sang with him and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society.”

Cantor Blatt earned her Cantorial Ordination for Spiritual and Educational Leadership as well as a Masters of Jewish Studies from Hebrew College. She also holds a Masters of Jewish Education from Towson University’s Baltimore Hebrew Institute. As an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, Cantor Blatt sang in the Jewish a cappella group, Kol Sasson, during which time she toured the country, including a stop at the White House to sing for President Obama at his annual Hanukkah party.

"Melanie brings terrific musical talent, a deep love of Judaism, and a unique spark

and spirit to all that she does."

School NewsGRANDPARENTS DAYVEHICLE DAY

THANK YOUto grandparents and special friends who attended this year’s Beth El

religious School Grandparent’s Day on Sunday, April 29th.

Students were engaged with their grandparents in the classroom as they shared stories, reviewed Hebrew and prepared for the upcoming holiday of Lag B’Omer. Grandparents who came to Kitah Dalet’s classes participated in a skype call with a class in Ashkelon, Israel. It is a pleasure to see families engaged

in learning together. We look forward to seeing parents and grandparents in the

building next school year!

17The Voice of Beth El Congregation

HEBREW SCHOOL 2018-2019Dear Religious School Parents,

There were many captivating experiences this year at the Berman-Lipavsky Religious School: the Olive Oil factory with JCRAFTS, the Dalet classes skype sessions with Ashkelon early on Sunday mornings, and charoset making with Pearlstone Farm in preparation for Pesach. Each program was multi-sensory experience that led to further reinforcement of the concepts that are taught in the classrooms. As we plan for the next school year, you will see more hands-on school programs throughout the year. This is just one of the many enhancements that we are making to our curriculum next year to make the program more engaging, educational and exciting!

Again, for 2018-2019 registration, we continue to offer the application online. The registration form is available to complete online on the Beth El website and the link is on the religious school email updates. Please be in touch if you have questions as you complete the form online. You have the option to pay the deposit online by credit card (with a 3% processing fee) or by check. You are also welcome to complete the form by hand and send it in with a check. The paper application is available on the Beth El website or in the religious school office.

GENERAL REGISTRATIONHebrew The 2018-2019 school year brings a big change to the Hebrew program. With consultation from the school committee and clergy support, we will no longer offer Hebrew tracks.

Moving forward, each grade will be assigned to a specific set of prayers that the teachers will work with classes on mastering during the school year as well as prayers associated with holidays. Teachers will also be expected to use Hebrew language regularly in their classrooms including popular Jewish phrases, values, and more. Please be in touch if you have any questions about this change.

Text Messaging for Reminders and UpdatesThere is a new section on the registration page that asks for you to authorize Beth El to send text messages to your cell phone. Beth El religious school has signed up to start sending message alerts via texts. This will be a fast way that you can get reminders from your teachers and updates about weather and upcoming programs. With your permission, the messages will be conveniently sent to your phone.

In AdditionEnhanced Pre-K programming: The all new B’resheet Class!

We have gotten more interest in preschool programming for children on Sunday mornings. This year, we will revamp the siblings program, offering the B’resheet pre-K class for children ages 2-4 years old. There will be more Judaic content including holiday celebrations and beginners Aleph/Bet as well as specials including music and Hebrew. Please share with your friends!

Technology Based Curriculum

Due to the success from the first LIVE from Beth El event, money was raised to increase the level of technology in the schools. We are in the process of researching curriculum, programs and apps that offers a high level of technology use.

During the year, several components of different programs will be tested in the school. More details will be available in the 2018-2019 Curriculum Overview.

Both the T’filah Team and Mitzvah Monsters will continue next year. These are two amazing organic opportunities for students to become comfortable and empowered to participate in Shabbat morning services.
