Redevelopment Support From the Top
We are lucky the States new Assembly Speaker, John Perez, once served onthe L.A. City Community Development Agency Board. He recognizes the valueof redevelopment as an important tool, which he believes was instrumental inturning around his district. He states, I have no interest in going afterredevelopment money as a way to balance the State budget this year.
Another Neighborhoods USA National Award
Back in 2005, we made the decision, through the RDA, to save five historicallysignificant homes when we assembled land for the West Gateway Project. Thisis where the Lyon Apartment Community will soon open their doors and will bethe future site of our new courthouse. We preserved these homes, purchasedvacant residential lots, moved them onto the lots, secured them, and worked withneighborhood groups to help restore them and find buyers. All of the homeshave been purchased and are currently undergoing rehabilitation This year the

The Recyclist: You leave that 'door spam' at your ownrisk, pardner
June 9, 2010 | 6:54am
There are many things I love about living in Long Beach.
The Aquarium of the Pacific. The Queen Mary. The fried chicken at Johnny Rebs'. But this -- my fancy
new plastic placard -- ranks right up there.
It turns out that the city of Long Beach hates "door spam" as much as I do. You know, all the junk that
people leave on your doorstep: the business cards, gardening fliers, real estate agents' calendars,
restaurant menus and the like that are shoved into the door jamb, wrapped around the doorknob,
shoved under the door or secured to my mailbox with a rubber band.

don't want that clutter in my house!)
But no more. I was tooling around the city's
website recently when I found this link alerting
me to a free placard to hang on my doorknob. It
carries a warning in English and Spanish that my
home is off limits to this clutter, which just ends
back in the city's garbage trucks. I was thrilled to
find it but also a bit dubious. Would it work? Keep
reading to find out ...
Bottom line: Overnight, the door clutter came to a
virtual halt. Seriously.
Turns out that these signs are not just window
dressing. The city has a little bite to back up its
bark: Advertisers who ignore the sign can be
reported to the city, and the city also encourages
you to print a form letter and send it to advertisers
alerting them that a line was crossed.
I've seen a few violations, including one from a
real estate agent. I called the agent to complain
that my sign was ignored. I fully expected a "Hey lady, what do you want me to do about it?" response.
Instead, he apologized and asked me not to file a complaint with the city: "Please give me your
address and I will come over there right now and remove it."
So this thing works.
But what do you think? Am I being too touchy about all this door spam, or do you hate it as well? And
do you have a better method for fending it off?

National neighborhood
honor goes to Long
Beach

A Long Beach neighborhood group struckpay dirt once again at the annual
Neighborhoods USA national 2010
Neighborhood of the Year awards
competition.
The Willmore City Heritage Association
emerged among four finalists to win first
place in its category for its 7-year effort tobuy, move, renovate and sell a 1904 home,
nicknamed "the School House," that had
been earmarked for demolition.
"We are so, so thrilled," said Cheryl Perry, the
former president of the Willmore group.
Perry was one of four locals to make a
presentation on her organization's project. She was joined at the Neighborhoods USA
conference in Little Rock, Ark., by her
husband, Dave, and Carrol Goddard.
"We felt it was a tough competition, so we felt
very lucky," Perry said. "All the projects were
very good."
First District Councilman Robert Garcia,
whose district includes Willmore City,
praised the group.
"Their caring and hard work on behalf of this
community and their commitment to historic
preservation are inspiring, and they really
deserve this recognition," Garcia said in astatement.
Willmore's win continued a strong tradition
by Long Beach neighborhoods in the
competition.
"We have the best Neighborhood Services
Bureau in the country, I really believe that,"said Perry, noting that she learned Long
Beach is far ahead of most other cities in
working with neighborhood groups to
strengthen and revitalize the area.
This is the 10th
time in six years and 15th overall that a LongBeach neighborhood has been recognized.
Last year, We Love Long Beach, a
neighborhood group based in Belmont
Shore, was a finalist, and in 2008, the North
Long Beach Community Action Group won
the first Grand Prize for the city. Willmore
was also recognized in 2004 with a second-

place award for a school children's safety
project in cooperation with several partners.
The Willmore City Heritage Association's
recent project, "Willmore's School House on
the Move," was entered in the Physical
Revitalization - Single Neighborhood
category. Willmore worked in partnership
with the city, Redevelopment Agency and
other organizations to keep the house frombeing razed.
The School House also became the model
that helped save four other homes in the
West Gateway area that have since been
moved to RDA lots in Willmore City.
The Neighborhood Resource Center, 425Atlantic Ave., will celebrate the win on with a
June 14 reception, at 6 p.m. The
neighborhood group will share its
presentation from the competition.
Neighborhoods USA is a national nonprofit
group that works to strengthen and promote
