Fishing on the Boat
By Yoshi
On the Monday of the long weekend we went fishing on the boat at Separation Point. I was happy as I like
going fishing. We launch the boat from Port Tarakohe. Dad puts the money in to lift the boom gate so we
can drive through to the boat ramp.
There were two or three other boats on the water near where we anchored. I saw black and white Shags on
the rocks. The water was very choppy and there was a strong current making the boat rock from side to
side. We dropped our lines over the side of the boat. It was a little bit tricky standing to start with
because of the waves moving the boat, but we soon got used to it. I caught a fifty centimetre Blue Cod and
one Sea Perch. Then we went closer to some rocks. The water was really calm. Teru used some small hooks
on his rod. Mum and I put some tiny hooks on a piece of fishing line with a sinker tied to the bottom. We
caught a lot of spotties and two baby Kahawai. We kept the Kahawai.
We all have different jobs on the boat. Dad’s job is to drive the boat and reel in the fish. Teru’s job is to
see the fish on the fish finder. Mum’s job is to kill and gut the fish. My job is to cut up the bait. Mum baits
all the hooks the first time.
Sometimes cutting the bait gets a bit boring; especially the stinky stuff!
Tuna Fishing
By Mike
In two months time I am going tuna fishing with Joe. Joe lives at the Tarakohe wharf in an old white and red wooden boat and was a commercial fisherman. We are going fishing out of the Bay. If we put enough fuel in the boat we could end up in Australia. The boat has been to Australia and back before. I want to go tuna fishing because it is a common fish that people eat. Japanese people eat a lot of tuna.
You catch tuna on either a line or a giant spear with a pointy end. I know someone who does welding and I am thinking of asking him to make a spearhead for me to use. I am not sure if it is a day trip or we are going to stay on the boat. If we do stay on the boat I will be catching squid because tuna love to eat them. We could also make squid rings for us to eat! You have to go out of the Bay to catch squid and sometimes they grow to two feet (or two thirds of a metre) long. Octopus have a round head and squid have a point with two little wings coming off the top and on the end of two tentacles are bits that glow. If I catch some tuna I will give some to the welder (who helped me make my spearhead) and put some in the freezer.
This week we have two fantastic fishing stories written by
Yoshi and Mike from Room Four.
HEADLICE We have been noticing lots of untreated headlice in the classrooms. We ask that you please check your children's hair regularly and treat if necessary. Headlice breed and spread prolifical-ly in primary schools and it ‘s important to eradi-cate them as soon as they are noticed!

Motupipi Three had both wins and losses in their pool games. They had a great time and improved as the day went on.
The Final was an exciting game with…..
Motupipi One Winning!
