Next week is Course Planning Week at Poppy and there are a number of opportunities for students and parents to gather as much information as possible to help students make good choices about the courses for next year and beyond. The 2019/20 school year will also see the final implementation phase of the recently redesigned curriculum at grades 11 and 12. As a result, there are a number of new courses being offered next year that have not existed before, and in some cases, courses have been renamed or changed slightly from what students and parents may have been used to in the past. As well, the final year of implementation of the new Ministry of Education Curriculum also brings with it the full implementation of the newest Graduation requirements for students in grades 8 through 12. This includes the replacement of Graduation Transitions 12 with the new course requirement of Life Connections along with a final Capstone Presentation for graduation. As result, it is extremely important that parents and students are aware of these new course changes and graduation requirements. As mentioned above, there are a number of events happening next week which will hopefully bring clarity and understanding for students about these changes and the course option they have for next year. These events are listed on the pages below and include course planning assemblies for all grades on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as our Course Planning Information Evening on Tuesday February 12. As well, on Tuesday and Wednesday at lunch in the small gym, we will be holding Course Information Fairs for students. During these fairs, teachers from the various departments around the school will be available to answer any student questions about the courses and opportunities that the department offers at Poppy. Students will also be receiving their course selection forms at their assemblies next week and once again this year, students will be required to enter their course selection choices at home using the Student MyEDBC Portal. Instructions for accessing the portal to enter course requests are available on the school website. http://bit.ly/DWPCourseSelectionOnline2019 The deadline for students to enter their course requests for next year is Friday March 1, 2019. Heathers – The Musical February 27 to March 2

The Poppy Players proudly present this year’s musical production, Heathers – The Musical, running February 27 to March 2. This year’s musical is a very serious play that addresses some very serious, difficult, yet real life, important issues that face many of our youth today and we are very excited about the great work our musical theatre students and staff are doing to create an excellent production this year. Stay tuned for information on ticket sales for a show you won’t want to miss!

Students Signing Out of School

Please be aware of our new sign out process for students. Students and parents will no longer find the sign out sheet on the front counter at the main office. Instead, any student who needs to sign out of school for the day needs to come to the main office and speak to our clerical staff at the main counter. Our clerical staff will NOT sign any student out of school without first speaking to a parent or unless they have received a phone call from a parent in advance. If you are picking your child up from school for an appointment or other reason, you will either need to come into the school and speak to our clerical staff or call in advance and let our clerical staff know you are signing your child out. Any students who leave school without following this process will be considered as unexcused absence.

Advanced Placement (AP Exams)

Advanced Placement Exams will be held in May for those students currently enrolled in an AP Course at D.W. Poppy. AP exams give students the opportunity to earn post-secondary credit if they achieve a qualifying score. Each AP exam costs $130. Students wishing to take an exam are asked to make a payment through our online system: https://sd35.schoolcashonline.com/ Payments are due February 28, 2019. Only students who pay for an exam in advance will have one ordered for them. Please see below for the list of exams that will be offered this year: AP English Language and Composition AP English Literature and Composition AP Physics C: Mechanics AP Calculus AB

PaperCut – Student Printing

Over the past couple of years, we have noticed a significant increase in the amount of student printing and paper use from our school printers. We have been monitoring student printing habits this year and are noticing that students are printing excessive amounts of pages and documents on school printers that are really not necessary to be printed. As a result, effective Monday February 11, students will have a $5.00 printing limit for the remainder of the school year. Each page that a student prints will cost 8 cents and this amount will be removed from a students’ account each time they print. Once a student has used up all of their $5, they will need to see Mr. Janzen in the Learning Commons and pay to have additional funds added to their printing account. It is our hope that this process will lead to students being more diligent and less wasteful in their day to day printing habits.

More Info for Parents on Attendance

In the most recent edition of the Redhawk Release, we provided information for parents regarding the importance of consistent attendance for students. Further to this information, we would strongly encourage parents to read the article found at the link below which discusses how school absenteeism can set off a troubling chain of events for students. https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/school-absenteeism-pediatrics-1.5005670

Mandatory Poppy PE Strip for Grade 8 Students

In an attempt to remove issues around inappropriate PE strip for gym class and some other issues around gym attire, we are moving towards the implementation of a required PE strip for all grades over the next few years. Therefore, as part of their fees, all grade 8 students will be required to purchase Poppy-issued PE strip for the 2018-19 school year. Please see the bullets below for more information on how this works:

• Each student in grade 8 will receive a high-quality pair of Redhawk shorts and a Redhawk t-shirt that students will be expected to wear for all PE classes throughout the year. Please see below for all of your purchase options.

• Students also have the option of purchasing Redhawk sweat pants instead of the shorts option. If parents wish to purchase additional PE strip items for their grade 8 students, or even other siblings at the school, they are also welcome to do so. Please see below for all of your purchase options.

• Please note that all PE strip purchases should be made using the KEV Cash Online system. You can access this system and set up an account in just a few minutes using the following link: https://dwps.sd35.bc.ca/parent-community/school-cash-online/

• Once you have paid for the PE strip online, please print off the receipt and have your son/daughter bring this receipt with them to their first PE class and their PE teacher will issue them their PE strip.

• The PE teachers will review gym strip expectations with the students.

• It is highly recommended that students write their names on the inside of their strip in case it gets lost during the year.

Grade 8 PE Strip Options

REQUIRED PE STRIP All grade 8 students must choose one of the following options for their Grade 8 Poppy PE Strip: Option #1 T-shirt and Shorts $25.00 Option #2 T-shirt and Sweat Pants $30.00 Option #3 T-shirts, shorts and sweat pants $45.00 ADDITIONAL PURCHASE OPTIONS Parents are able to purchase a second set of PE strip at the same prices as above. Or, if parents would like to purchase additional PE strip items, they are also for purchase at the following prices: T-shirt $10.00 Shorts $15.00 Sweat Pants $20.00 Crew Sweat Shirt $20.00

SASSY stands for “Service Above Self” Student Youth. Incorporating Rotary’s guiding motto, the awards aim to recognize and celebrate the leadership achievements of Langley youth who exemplify the ideals of Rotary by making a positive impact in our Langley communities or around the world. Last year, Rotary received 63 applications over the seven categories and awarded money to 21 students. Work Experience Opportunities during Spring Break (and beyond):

Opportunity #1 - Hunter Dickinson is a mineral exploration and mining company with head office in Vancouver that explores for, develops and mines a variety of minerals around the world. They have invited students to apply for any of these opportunities. In their downtown Vancouver office there are three, 1-week long postings (March 18-22):

• 1 student in Reception • 1 student in Resource & Database • 1 student in Risk and Compliance

As well as 1, 2-day long posting (March 18-19):

• 1 student in Tax Accounting.

These are excellent opportunities for students interested in the minerals industry and who wish to gain experience in a major Canadian corporation employing a diverse and highly skilled and professional workforce with projects around the world. The application deadline is Friday, February 15, 2019 and please speak to or email Ms. Czuprynski for application requirements or additional details.

Opportunity #2 – Animal Logic is a world leader in Feature Animation that creates such films as The Lego Movie 2, Peter Rabbit and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. They will be running their second ‘work experience week’ for grade 11 students from BC at their Studio in downtown Vancouver, where successful applicants will spend the week learning and applying a variety of computer animation related skills. This could

help the students achieve all of their 30 hours work experience, in one fun and exciting week.

It will be taking place in Spring Break Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 22, 2019 and the deadline for applications from interested students is Monday, March 4, 2019. Please use the online application form on their website at www.animallogic.com

During the week students will be taught all of the required skills on our equipment and lunch will be provided, however transport to and from the studio will be the responsibility of the participants.

Some queries that came up last year:

• This is completely free to participate in – we cover all the in-house costs and provide lunch for each student

• Students are responsible for their own travel to and from the Studio in downtown Vancouver (and accommodation if they are from further out areas of BC).

• We will complete any forms relating to

work experience form from your schools

• If required, we could find time in the schedule for the successful students to be visited by a school representative (time/date arranged in advance)

• All of last year’s students had an

amazing time and are still in contact with our studio for career advice
