HELP WANTED A.S.A.P.

Needed, someone knowledgeable in the process of calving out cows.

An individual to watch the herd during the day, and help when there is a difficult delivery.

Other duties may include light chores, ability to work independently

and have a valid driver's license.

Please call 577-7861 or 577-7060.

Two co-workers were talking about having to wait a long time to see their doctors. One of them said, “My doctor’s office encourages me to bring a book to read while I wait.” “That’s nothing,” the other replied. “My doctor’s office encourages me to write a book while I wait.”

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

Living across the street from Parkland School gives ENERGY a whole new meaning! One would think going back to class for a rest would be a must – not likely. And even the weather doesn’t slow the action at recess – one day recently (when the temp was on the minus side) one student was seen wearing shorts. One even rode their bike to school – staying upright on the ice did create a problem. Never a dull moment!

The Forum & Curling Rink seem to be the “spots for action” these days with all the playoffs, bonspiels, etc. Chase the Ace started at the Forum on the 1st – Ivon Irving went home $68 richer from week #1. Attendance (thus the pot) will grow as the weeks tick off.

February 1st saw some costly changes come into effect at SGI – penalties for distracted driving… 1st offence – more than double to $580; 2nd offence - $1,400 and 3rd offence - $2,100. Besides the fines, one could face a 7-day vehicle impoundment and 4 demerits on your license. If you must text/talk on your phone while driving, pull over and complete your communication. Like the old saying says “can’t walk and chew gum at the same time” – at least you shouldn’t!

Have you escaped the cold/flu bug this season – it can hit fast – and thankfully leave just as fast. A sinus/head cold came to our door one evening – and even though it wasn’t made welcome, it managed to sneak in. After 2 or 3 boxes of Kleenex and sampling every “over the counter” remedy, it was sent packin’.

Had the opportunity to attend another Moosomin Arts Council show on the 5th – Chris Funk – a Magician with a hint of musician! Trying a couple of the tricks “behind closed doors” later, the results weren’t quite the same – great show – described as “refreshingly different”.

Seemingly these days, the dismal news outnumbers the good – the flu epidemic worldwide, political unrest, weather conditions, strikes, and the list goes on. It seems to be a way of everyday life anymore. Friday is Valentine’s Day – lets spread the LOVE!

Whoa – the “power to be” are telling us that for the last half of February we can expect to experience weather similar to what we’ve seen in the first half – then comes March??

And the telemarketing calls haven’t gone away. Received one yesterday telling me that my license had been suspended – and to have it reinstated immediately just press #1 for instructions – CLICK!! And even more weird, the # that came up on our call display was our # !! HAPPY VALENTINES DAY … …

CHEESECAKE BROWNIES ½ cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup flour ¼ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 8 oz cream cheese ¼ cup sugar 1 egg

Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla till well mixed. Sift in cocoa powder and flour, then mix in baking powder and salt. Make cream cheese layer in separate bowl by creaming together cream cheese and sugar, blend in egg. Spray or grease 8x8 pan, line with parchment paper and lightly spray paper. Spread out most of the brownie batter, reserving ¾ cup. Pour cheesecake layer over brownie batter. Drop spoonfuls of reserved brownie batter over cheesecake layer and swirl together on top. Bake for 25 – 30 minutes until set.

USED EYE GLASSES

Seemingly we are at/or near approaching that time of year when SPRING CLEANING happens in “normal” households!

If you come under this category – and happen to come across any old used eye glasses (or parts of), put them aside to give to the local Lions Club. They collect/send to Third World Countries for their use.

A NEW FEATURE – MAYBE?

It is a known fact that small businesses in many rural communities (including ours) are finding present times difficult – mainly because of the popular online shopping and economic conditions, etc.

That is one reason why some businesses are bringing in products/services that perhaps rural residents would not have access to.

Now here’s where we come in. Doesn’t it only seem fair for us to try and support these efforts as best we can?

A local business person approached News-in-Five the other day with an idea that we might well consider. Each week, we might spotlight one of our businesses (with their permission) re background, reasons for branching out, what services they offer and general plans/ideas to the future. This could be, and will be done via social media but doesn’t keeping it local seem a little more personal?

There will be the regular “naysayers” but they have that option – and unless we give it a try, whose to say there won’t be rewards? Quote: “There’s no sense in being sought after if you can’t be found”. Stay tuned … …

2020 – 2021 SASK LOTTERIES COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM

(Through the Wawota Recreation Board)

Each year funding is available through Saskatchewan Lotteries, based on a per capita amount, for the population of

the Town of Wawota plus allocations of populations from RM #92 and RM#93. The program is designed to provide

funding for sport, culture and recreation programs and is administered through the Wawota Recreation Board.

The Rec. Board then disperses the money to local groups and clubs that have made application for funding for their

eligible programs. The fast approaching deadline to apply for the 2020-2021 Community Grant is February 21, 2020

– NO exceptions.

For application forms or more information on the program criteria,

please see Debbie at the Municipal Office.

PLEASE NOTE: This is also a reminder to anyone that received grant monies from the 2019-2020 Saskatchewan

Lotteries Community Grant Program - the MANDATORY Follow Up Report showing all eligible expenditures for

your approved program must be turned in to Debbie on or before March 31, 2020 in order for the Recreation Board

to access funding for the next program year. Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.

ATTENTION CITIZENS OF WAWOTA:

The Council of the R.M. OF WALPOLE NO. 92 are very concerned about the low numbers of ambulance personnel

currently operating the Wawota Ambulance Service

and the fact that there is no one stepping up to help out!

Did you know that the ambulance service no longer runs 24/7? There are fewer and fewer number of qualified personnel to cover all ambulance shifts therefore Wawota goes without service

during those times. There is an average wait time of 35 minutes for an ambulance to come from another community to respond to

an emergency in our community!

Did you know that personnel do indeed receive remuneration for being a “Community Ambulance Attendant &/or Driver”?

Ambulance personnel are members of CUPE and are a part of a negotiated contract along with other Sun Country Health Region

(SCHR) employees. Personnel receive $5.00/hour for every hour on standby. If you are called out for any reason, personnel are

then paid approximately $21.00(+) per hour for actual time out or for at least a minimum of 3 hours.

Have you heard rumors that SCHR does not pay for all the expenses paid out in order to get certified?

SCHR pays for a good portion of the expense to get certified once you have completed the EMR course, the EMR college of

Paramedics exam and successfully been hired by SCHR (will also need Criminal Check, Work Reference and Minimum Class 5

Drivers License). You must pay for all expense up front then wait to be reimbursed by SCHR.

In an effort to assist with recruitment of ambulance staff for Wawota & District, the Council of the R.M. Walpole are proposing to

pay for all the expenses incurred for you to become an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). Fees will be paid on your behalf up

front with no repayment schedule required.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in becoming certified and helping out on YOUR ambulance – please contact the RM of

Walpole office @ 306-739-2545 at your very earliest convenience.

Any time you can give to be on ambulance is more time that Wawota is covered!

The trouble is that the car of tomorrow is being driven on the highway of yesterday by the driver of today.

You know it’s time for change when children act like leaders and leaders act like children.

It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere.

Some Helpful Hints from the ‘40s … • A solution of salt and vinegar will quickly clean

unlacquered brassware or copperware.

• Porcelain is easily cleaned with salt sprinkled on a flannel cloth.

• Leather furniture can be cleaned at home. Use saddle soap or mild soapsuds. Rinse with a damp cloth. Dry thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth. Follow with a leather conditioning dressing. Never use furniture polish, oil, varnish, shellac, wax or a treated duster.

• Sticky dates, raisins or figs will come apart easily if placed in your oven for a few minutes.

• Always sift flour before measuring and pile it lightly into the cup without jarring. Otherwise you use too much flour which is wasteful and the finished product is not as good.

• Flour can be substituted for cornstarch. Use twice as much.

• Too much baking powder is just as disastrous in baking as too little. So be exact.

• Keep your precious cake from breaking when you remove it from the pan by cooling in pan 5 to 15 min. Then place cake rack on pan and invert quickly.

• To cut very fresh cake or bread without crumbling, use a thin-bladed knife heated in hot water, then dried.

ENTERTAINMENT – WITH A TWIST

Last year at the United Church Time & Talent fundraiser event, the Raise the Rafters gang put in a “mystery” dinner for 10 people. Nicki Ford and Company purchased the meal for a nice amount. Tuesday evening was the date suitable for all.

Upon arriving at the Community Centre at 6:30, “mystery guests” were welcomed to “Chances Are Diner” by the RTR gang (all dressed in the 50’s theme attire.

Each guest received a “menu unusual” – instead of what they were to dine on in four courses, titles of 50’s songs were listed. They had to choose three songs per course with hopes that they might (chances are NOT) receive their food in ORDER! (Cutlery was also “by chance” – just ask Allan Brehaut who had to eat his meat and potatoes with the straw from his orange float!) After each course, the table was cleared except the floats which everyone eventually received – if and when they chose the RIGHT song!

The ”surprise” menu included an orange float, relish tray, devilled eggs, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, waldorf salad, jellied layers, bacon wrapped asparagus, home-made buns, apple pie.

The room was decorated with a “home-made” jukebox complete with 45’s records and others, running lites, original COKE sign, dancing silhouettes, etc.

At the end of the dinner, RTR announced that they will be offering a Medieval Feast at this year’s Time & Talent on March 15th – “most” of our guests showed interest!

Do we have fun … NOT MUCH !!

Grandpa was telling his young grandson what life was like when he was a boy. "In the winter we’d ice skate on our pond. In the summer we could swim in the pond, and pick berries in the woods. We’d swing on an old tire my dad hung from a tree on a rope. And we had a pony we rode all over the farm." The little boy was amazed, and sat silently for a minute. Finally he said, "Granddad, I wish I'd gotten to know you a lot sooner!"

Wife to irate husband: Normally I wouldn’t dream of opening a letter addressed to you, but this one was marked ‘private’.”
