Friday, August 7, 2015 Dear Parents and Friends Keeping children safe and teaching them strategies for safe and protective behaviour is extremely important. Last week, the combined Catholic Schools of Mackay hosted a parent information session on Cybersafety. The session offered many critical insights for parents into the online world and how we can work to educate children to be aware and to protect themselves from dangers online. It was great to see it so well attended. As part of our Personal and Social Development Education Program, our school will be implementing the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum with students from Prep to Year 7. The curriculum is based on principles of best practice in child safety education and centres around three key messages: Recognise, React and Report. Through a series of lessons, students will learn how to recognise, react and report when they are unsafe or find themselves in situations that can have a significant detrimental effect on their physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing. We will implement this program as part of our special focus on Student Protection beginning in Week 9 with Student Protection Week and culminating in Term 4, Week 4 with Day for Daniel activities. We are also holding two special events in the lead up to this focus: Wednesday 19 August: Bruce and Denise Morcombe will be visiting our school and talking to students from Prep Year 6, focusing on their message to Recognise, React and Report. They will visit our school from 11am 12pm. Parents are welcome to join us for this special presentation. Tuesday 8 September: Senior Constable Nigel Dalton will be presenting a Child Safety presentation for parents as a combined School Board and Parents and Friends Association initiative. The session will run from 6pm 7.30pm in our school library. He will also be presenting sessions to students in Year 4 6 during Week 9. I would highly recommend that parents make some time to attend one or both of these important sessions, so that these key safety messages can be reinforced at home. It is only through consistent, repeated reinforcement of these messages that we can establish strong skills in children that enable them to make safe choices. Bianca Hodges Principal
