PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Revised Enrolment Policy The Department of Education has revised the enrolment policy for schools. The details are included in the attachments at the end of the newsletter.

Community Building Partnerships Program Following a submission last year, our P&C have been successful in securing a grant of $20,000 as part of the Community Building Partnerships Program. Our sincere thanks to John Sidoti MP State Member for Drummoyne for his support of Drummoyne Public School and to our P&C President Dr Tanveer Ahmed for his support of this initiative. The funds will be used for the next phase of the playground upgrade.

Teacher Farewell This week we farewelled Ms Noni Anderiesen who has secured a transfer to Kingsgrove Public School to be closer to home. We would like to thank Noni for her considerable service to the school over the past 7 years in particular to the creative and performing arts and wish her every success at her new school. group discussions with staff and a professional learning staff meeting. He will work with primary classes on Monday sharing some outstanding teaching strategies.

Spring Fete – A Time for Memories Our lives are built on memories. For our children they will remember events, like the Spring fete next Sunday, and look back with fondness of the great time they enjoyed with family and friends. I would like to encourage all of our Drummoyne families to join us for this very special community event on Sunday 25th August. If you would like to volunteer on the day or on Saturday for setting up, please register on the P&C volunteer’s site: https://signup.zone/dps-fete

Return of green form To assist the school with planning our staffing for next year, we would like all families to complete the green enrolment form sent home last week. This includes families who are remaining at the school and those who may be leaving us. Families with Year 6 students only are not required to return the form.

With best wishes for the week ahead, Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

STRANGER DANGER From time to time we receive alerts related to Stranger Danger. Please remind your children of the following points:

Avoid walking on your own and instead walk with other family members, friends or an adult you know when going to and from school;

Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people;

Make sure your parents or another adult who knows you, knows where you are at all times;

Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to;

Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police; and

Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.

Please remind the children to 'never go anywhere with anyone without asking them first.'

Ordering and paying online helps to streamline the Book Club process for our hardworking parent volunteers and helps to ensure that all students receive their orders. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. A quick reminder about the Premier’s Reading Challenge! Students in years 3 – 6 have until August 30 to complete their Student Reading Records! Please go to the PRC website and record the books you have read before then! The easiest way to find the website is to go through the Student Portal! There is a direct link to the PRC there. Log in details are the same as your normal school log in. Try not to leave it to the last minute to avoid delays due to heavy website traffic. K – 2 students have already had their Student Reading Records filled in at school. Let’s see how many students can get a certificate this year!

Within the enrolment cap, a number of enrolment places (the buffer) must be kept aside for the likely number of local students who will need to enrol during the year. For this reason, a school will not take non-local students once they reach their buffer, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

100-point residential address checkParents planning to enrol their child at a school that is near or at their buffer or cap will be asked to complete the 100-point residential address check to confirm they live within the school’s designated intake area. This means you will need to provide documents to verify your child’s current address. So that schools only seek information relevant to your child’s enrolment, a list of approved documents for the residential address check is available from the school or the department’s website at https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/policies/enrolment-of-students-in-nsw-government-schools.

Selection criteria for non-local enrolmentSibling enrolments are now clearly prioritised (where possible) and selection criteria for non-local enrolment will not include student ability, performance or achievement.

The Enrolment of Students in NSW Government Schools policy is in place to assist schools to meet their obligations under the Education Act 1990 - to ensure that every student has a place at their local school. The policy also communicates to staff and the community a transparent enrolment process.

Why was the enrolment policy revised?Across the state, many communities are changing. Some are growing at rates never seen before. Some schools that used to be able to accept out-of-area enrolments, no longer have the room to do so.The revised policy is designed to support schools to manage all enrolment applications, encourage greater consistency in decision-making and make sure the enrolment choices are clear for parents.

What are the changes?The enrolment capThe enrolment cap is the number of students that can be enrolled at a school based on the school’s permanent accommodation. The enrolment cap tells us whether the school may or may not have the capacity to accept non-local enrolments. It is not a target or limit on the number of local enrolments a school can take.Each school with a local intake area will have a cap set by the department from Term 4 2019.

ContactFor general enquiries contact: 1300 679 332 or email: [email protected] enrolment enquiries, speak to your local school. Find school contact details at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/going-to-a-public-school/finding-a-public-school

I already have a child enrolled as an out-of-area student in a NSW Government school. Can I enrol my other children at that school too?This will depend on the capacity of the school:· If the school is not near its buffer, then siblings should

be able to be enrolled at the school. In fact, siblings of students currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

· If the school is nearing its buffer, then the school will form a non-local enrolment panel. The panel considers non-local enrolment applications when the number of non-local applications received exceeds the number of places available below the buffer. Again, in this instance, siblings of students currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

· If the school is at capacity they will not accept non-local enrolment applications unless there are exceptional circumstances.

I have already accepted an offer for my child to attend a school in 2020 that is not my local school. What happens now? The enrolment will proceed. Non-local enrolments accepted before Term 4 2019 for students starting in 2020 should not be affected.

What is the criteria for enrolment in a school that is not my local school? Schools that are able to accept non-local enrolment applications establish a non-local enrolment selection panel, if demand exceeds the number of places below the school’s buffer. Schools are required to make the selection criteria available to the school community.

My circumstances are challenging and I think this school is best for my child. We live outside the school’s intake area. What should I do?We understand that not everyone’s circumstances are the same, and that there are instances where exceptional circumstances will need to be considered. Your circumstances should be discussed with the principal of your local school who can assist you to negotiate an out-of-area enrolment if there are exceptional and compelling circumstances.

What has not changed?Schools will continue to enrol students who live in their local intake area, regardless of the school’s cap status. There are no changes to enrolment rights of siblings of non-local students. In schools with available places, each enrolment application is considered on its merits, including if siblings currently attend the school. If the school is below capacity, out-of-area applications for siblings of current students will be given enrolment priority.Schools will continue to provide families with support and advice during the enrolment process, including assessment of exceptional and compelling circumstances particularly for vulnerable students and their families.Schools will also continue to apply the policy fairly and consistently using transparent and accountable processes when making decisions around enrolment applications. Parents have a right to appeal to determine whether the stated processes have been applied in a procedurally fair manner.

But what do the changes mean for me?What if my child is already enrolled but we do not live in that school’s intake area?Your child will remain enrolled at the school as the revised policy does not affect students already enrolled in NSW Government schools.

We were in area when my child was enrolled in the school. The department has since changed the school’s boundary and our residence is now out of area. I have other children and I want them all to go to the same school. What are my options?At times it is necessary for the department to make adjustments to a school’s local enrolment intake area. This could mean a family with a child/children already enrolled is then outside the local intake area. When this happens, the family will still be able to enrol siblings together at the school, regardless of whether the school is over the buffer or cap.

From sharing pictures of a child’s first day at school to key moments at high school, many adults don’t consider the potential risks or breach of future privacy for kids. In fact, it is now become a ritual to announce the full name and date of birth of a child online within hours of them being born. This is just the beginning of a child’s digital footprint.

Although children are now ‘born digital’, exposure in the online world can present just as many risks as the physical world can pose. Images and identifying details can be used for numerous activities that put your child at risk, from stalking, to cyberbullying, identity theft, and even digital kidnapping.

The Australian eSafety Commission warns that half of all images on paedophile image-sharing sites originate from social media sites and blogs. Parents are responsible for protecting kids until they are old enough to make their own decisions about their online presence.

So, what can parents do?

Start by ‘thinking privacy’ before posting images of children online. You’ll be protecting their digital footprint and setting them up for a healthy relationship with the digital world.

Seek consentAlways ask others before sharing images of their children, even your family. Speak up about how you feel about images of your child being shared. When your child is old enough, ask them for consent, empowering them to understand they have a right to their privacy online. As they become teenagers, hopefully they will have more respect for what they post online and have confidence to speak to others about their consent guidelines.

Understand the settingsCheck the settings of your social media channels to ensure your posts are not public. Speak to your friends and family about this and don’t be afraid to ask for help to get it right. If your child has social media channels of their own, go through the settings with them to minimise the risk of unwanted shares.

Think about the detailAvoid including children’s identifiable details such as school badges, logos, uniforms, name tags or identifiable locations such as your home area or school. Alternatively, blur these details prior to posting.

Be selectiveCreate a simple checklist to help make decisions regarding posting online easy. What do you deem appropriate? Are you happy to share images of your children in swimwear? Do you want to avoid full-frontal face shots?

If your child is old enough, explain why you are selecting certain pictures and not sharing others. If you have a teenager who is sharing their own images, talk to them about what is appropriate and potential repercussions of not setting boundaries.

Remove metadataMetadata on digital images records the time, date and GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken and can be accessed through shared images, and your sharing service may record your IP address. You can wipe this information with appropriate software or share screenshots of your photos to avoid metadata sharing. Screenshot sharing creates a lower resolution photo, so it’s less likely to be tampered with by a third party.

Think ‘privacy first’ to reduce many of the risks involved with image sharing. Have conversations with your children to instil this mentality; help them build empathy; and identify the steps for minimising risk whilst helping them build a healthy relationship with technology so they can become responsible digital citizens.

Are you preparing your child for success in the ‘Asian Century’ by learning Chinese?

Facts: Mandarin Chinese is the world’s most spoken language with 1 in every 5

people in the world speaking it, and the second most spoken language in Australia;

in NSW primary schools, Chinese is the most popular LOTE program; China is

Australia’s largest trading partner; and learning Chinese enhances cognitive

capabilities by using both sides of the brain (whilst most other languages including

English, French, Spanish etc only use the left side of the brain)!

ChiFUNese is the leading provider of Chinese language education at 60+ schools and

early learning centres around Sydney. Our students feel happy and inspired to learn

because it’s fun and easy!

Term 3 Dance Program

Dear Parents, As a mandatory part of the Creative Arts curriculum, this term all students will be participating in a whole school dance program organised by an experienced external provider, ‘Dancefever Multisport’. Dancefever Multisport have been teaching dance and physical education programs in primary schools since 1999 and are currently teaching in over 750 schools across NSW. Dancefever will provide two accredited dance staff who will teach the students Hip Hop, Jive, Tango, and contemporary and creative compositions. The program is structured for all ages and abilities and the students will not only learn dance routines and theory, but will also learn to interact and demonstrate appropriate social skills. Depending on your child’s class, the program will take place in the school hall on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting on Thursday 25 July 2019. Towards the end of term 3, the students will perform their newly learnt dance routines during a parent showcase. This date will be provided to parents through the school newsletter. Please complete the permission note below and return it to the school office with the payment of $45 by Friday 9 August. Funds are available to support families who are experiencing financial difficulties. Please contact the school if we can help. Thank you for your support of this excellent school initiative bringing skilled dance instructors into the school. Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL
